Excited to see a former friend of mine is in the women’s luge for the USA team - Emily Sweeney. She’s been training for as long as I can remember and would spend most of the school year at the training facility in Lake Placid. Really cool girl, Sergeant in the army too.

We cannot be looking at the same woman. Unless you meant female speed skaters are the hottest in general and Cindy Klassen is a goddess of the sport. ... Otherwise I think we have very very different tastes. So is this thread going to turn into "who is the hottest female competing athlete at the event thread"? lol..
I tried to watch Sweden vs. Japan ice hockey.. I should have been doing uni stuff.. It was pretty pathetic. That can't be Sweden's A team.. They are ranked 4th but if that's the best they have they have no chance against Canada/USA..

Sweden is the only team to knock-off either of Canada or US to win a Silver in this event. Every other gold and silver has been won by Canada and the USA in the history of this event. Sweden beat the US in 2006 and won the Silver. The crying and moaning and finger-pointing amongst the US women was pretty entertaining stuff. Tony Granato's sister or cousin or whatever.. Cammie.. went after the US Olympic Hockey committee hard after that loss.
I think the female goalie considered to be #1 in the world is Finnish. This basically gives Finland the designation of "goalie team". i'd say Finland has a small shot at beating the far superior Canadians or Americans if their goalie stands on her head.

When Klassen won all her medals she had an amazing 10/10 body. i don't know if she has gotten fat since then. The problem i have is the women i think have the nicest bodies are also only 6 weeks away from gaining 60 lbs. Most of the figure skaters i thought were super hot 10 years ago are all fat now.

such a lack of interest in winter sports on TL? :o

I like ski jumping. Yesterday's competition was a real nail biter. Sick 2nd jump by Wellinger and a well deserved win. He's also a pretty down to earth guy - a typical role model for younger athletes. Other than that: If you're into pretty women I'd recommend watching women's curling. Especially the scandinavian teams are hot.

Loch, one of the if not THE goat not even medalling after 3 perfect runs beforehand (and a nice advantage over everyone else) is definitely one of the most surprising things in the history of the winter olympics. Sadly not in a good way
Edit: With that result Loch has also dropped out of the team event

I usually don't watch it as I find it boring, but Loch made the only grave mistake that was easy to notice. Grats Austria! Now that Ski-Jumping isn't working out for you anymore, it helps. That said, Marcel Hirscher is gonna grab 2-3 more gold medals.

apparently, marie philip poulin is the best female hockey player in the world. the team canada uniforms do nothing for me.
they should really consider male referees for these women's hockey games. the women referees are slow, change directions slowly and are out of position a lot.

At the moment, I would bet my money on there being a mixed normal hill event soon. Afaik the IOC basically decided that all new events/sports must be open to men and women equally, and as lond as women havent started with ski flying yet, that's a nother reason why it is not going to happen.

I was reading that the womens snowboarding event had some really high winds such that it was probably dangerous conditions, anyone have any idea why this wasnt postponed?

I could be wrong but I believe it was already postponed then the organizers eventually decided that it was good enough. It was a struggle for most just to complete their run. Some events got postponed multiple days. Dunno why they this one was different.

I am guessing they didn't want to take the risk of having all of the event postone at the same date and slopestyle is bit less impacted by the wind compare to dowhill where there is a very high risk of serious injuries. But they should prorably have postpone it, it was a shit show, almost no one managed to do all the jumps

It was quite an amusing shit show at times though. It came down to whoever managed to change her trick midair after the wind blew her off course. For US viewers, the final drama came when the announcers weren't sure whether one of the Canadians was going to get an extra try while the winner was doing her glory run. I'm guessing they were just mistaken because it would be stupid to give the Canadian an extra try after the winner already blew her second run.

What? I hope they were just doing some artificial drama because it would be so ilogical to give a second chance to a single person out of the 20+ that were there.

Everybody was timing their runs in between the big gusts of wind. One of the Americans got a second chance because there was a big gust of wind that hit immediately before one of the big jumps. I believe it was the troublesome second jump. She saw it and immediately aborted her run. IIRC, she was awarded a second chance pretty quickly. So the US announcers were talking about overhearing that another competitor could get a second chance after the second to last woman finished her run. They didn't confirm that there would be no second chance until after the winner's glory run.
|
These wind issues are annoying, but unless they actually puts the health of atheletes into danger, they have always been part of the deal in most snow sports. It might be horribly annoying for some atheletes who get their single chance (in four years) at glory ruined because of a unlucky gust of wind, but I dont think it can be fully mitigated. In ski jumping, you get a least a partial compensation to your score if the wind is bad for you, but this is a case where it has been a lottery before at times. Maybe other sports could do something similar.
|
In this skiing competition i had to do a double take at the swedish skiers hats to see if its the Fnatic logo or not :D
|
|
Yeah, I saw it live. Luckily she didn't hit the wall with the head, but with the feet.

Well she slid up to the top and hit her feet, then back down and hit her back on the bottom lip of the curve. Up and walking soon after, which is really good.

National press usualy rank countries by the system which gave their country the best placement, for exemple I remember a ranking that calculate the number of gold, then the number of silver, then the number of bronze because it was the one giving Canada the best place, but right now canadian medias are doing ranking by number of medals cause it's better for them this way. USA usually for most medals as far as I know, but it's funny to me that they have to calculate with gold to place ahead of country with less then a quarter of their population.

It's not like the IOC has an official ranking that gives a big parade to the top country. Media organizations are free to rank countries as they please on their sports page. If I'm the Australian media, I can rank medal winners in alphabetical order. Afghanistan is going to have to medal to knock me out.

Our football team might have disintegrated, but at least we still have speed skating. A 22 year old newcomer who only did her first professional race in november last year, rode an amazing race and won gold on ladies 5k speedskating today, giving us 6 out of 7 gold medals in the speedskating so far. The one we missed, was won by a Dutch-Canadian who only got a Canadian passport 4 years ago.
Pretty silly stuff but the 500m is still upcoming and we usually don't win that one at least

The Winter Olympics in general, save a few events, seem to not be resonating outside northern European countries.
Here in California, we have the 2 US stars in the snowboard but people seem unaware that the Olympics are going on. I had some people do a double take and wonder what Olympics it is because it doesn't feel like winter at all.

well one of the main missions of such events is to introduce winter sports to more people and help building infrastructure for sports to develop in new countries. I think its fair that sometimes it feels a little off.

last rock in the 1st end is not that big of an advantage. the 13-2 thing is more of a coincidence than anything else.
for people into the Finland//Sweden rivarly its happening in women's hockey on the 17th. The winner faces team USA. Lots of days off for Canada and the USA in this women's event.

Last rock at the start is a huge advantage... 13-2 is not "just a thing". You can dictate the flow of the whole set

Well, too many of the events require a mountainous snowy area and not too many countries have that. Even the big sporting countries in Asia like China and South Korea don't have much of a history in winter sports, at least compared to the summer ones. Maybe Japan has a little bit more participation in them.

Turn out the Quebec team come from my home town, never heard of anyone actually playing/ watching/ not making fun of curling growing up. But honestly I can't be surprise the curling team come from the city with the lowest crime stats in Quebec. I guess it must be fun when you know how it work

That was crazy. Must be the biggest sensation ever in Alpine skiing. At least when it comes to the olympics. Glad that Lara Gut missed the bronze by 0,01 sec. Thats what she gets for crying over not winning gold even though she had a dreadful season so far.

Anway, in the tornament you linked I count a 48-30 score for team with the last stone in the first end, which still seems to be relevant to me.

The win was such a bizarre moment. Nobody saw it coming. Not even Czech analysts, they thought she might get like a top 15 finish if she has a good race. Even she herself genuinely couldn't believe it after she finished, she thought the board was wrong that they're gonna fix it or that she must've missed a gate or something. It wasn't even a flawless run, she made a couple small mistakes. And it's not even like this is a niche sport, you could make a case for the women's super G being one of the biggest events in the whole Olympics. Definitely one of the biggest wtf moments in all of Winter Olympics history, alongside the Australian short track winner from 2002.
You can see the winning race and Ledecka's reaction here:
|
Yeah, quite crazy. She definitely made a few mistakes.
Meanwhile, Poland got their first medal. Kamil Stoch won just now.

so i guess Russia is the favourite in the men's hockey event because they have KHL players? so its Finland versus USA in the women's hockey semi-finals. it might be a close game.

Well if you score in the first end you lose the hammer. If your opponent scores you still hold the hammer but you are losing the match. This is why you can not "control" a match with the hammer in end #1. It is pretty unusual to blank, that is have no one score, 2 ends in a row. Listen to how the commentators reacted to the 2 consecutive blank ends between sweden and canada last night. he was pretty damn surprised.

Russia is somewhat of a favorite but other countries have KHL players too. Imo Russia has been overrated a lot before this tournament and i think pretty much any top team could win. Finland vs Sweden would be a nice and a pretty possible final though.

I mean from the nhl perspective it makes sense. They get exposed to a ton of risk for no direct compensation. The promise is that some causal fans might watch te nhl more which has never really been proven.
I just enjoy the fan boy experience of watching the best play for something meaningful. The league sponsored tournament is lame.

i have a relative who played in the NHL for 2 contracts. His body was so beat up he went to Germany to play where its not as rough. He re-wrote the record book in the German league... banged dozens of girls every year.... made a tonne of cash... retired from playing hockey and stayed in germany for 1 more year of partying and girls.
after making several million playing hockey for 15 years he returned to Canada with $0 and had to sleep on my dad's couch and live in his place rent free for 8 weeks to get himself a job and a bit of cash. he moved out like 2 months later.
he has some great stories about the female hockey fans in Germany.
|
That's a nice story indeed. I didn't even know you can make several millions playing hockey in Germany.

i think he made ~400K a year. He had a $40,000 watch and a $200,000 car. its all gone now. it was weird he was always the "cool uncle" and watching him play hockey or playing with him i was always ... "wow i can't even do that in my dreams"... then to see him on my dad's couch. it was an eye opener.

4-3 for Russia, great job team Germany though, very exciting game.

Oh well. It is a fairytale story nevertheless.

Since 1992 I waited for the first ever olympic hockey gold for team Russia (1992 we were "united team", as USSR collapsed just weeks before Olympics). I've never missed a single tourney and suffered through Hasek robbing us in 1998, through controversial games in Salt Lake, through passing Canada in Torino only to show up completely depleted to the semis with Suomi, the 3-7 nightmare in Vancouver that i watched at 5am, even though it was a work week and a somewhat expected disappointment in Sochi. With all that said, ice hockey tourney in Winter Olympics is something you wait 4 years and live through every game. I couldn't care less for gold medals in 2018. Thanks Gary.

so sad Germany lost , sigh

Thanks Gary. if you take this perspective then the U.S.S.R. gold medals before 1992 were also pretty meaningless. I think USSR had the best team in the world from ~1981 to 1988. But, they rarely participated in best-on-best events so its hard to say for certain.

I'm not that old to care much about 1988 and before. But I do know that the summit series meant a much greater deal to our fathers than the Olympics.

"The countdown begins in earnest now for Beijing 2022. The third city that will host both the summer and the winter Games.
If you remember the 2008 Games, the Bird's Nest stadium will be used we're being told and the Water Cube - used for swimming events in the summer Olympics - will be used for the curling."
It kinda feels very close to have 2 Olympic games in the same location in just 14 years. Very nice for Chinese athletes and sports.

Olympic hockey has rarely been meaningful... maybe 1998 to 2014 and that's about it. that was all during Gary Bettman's tenure as NHL Commissioner. to borrow your quote. Thanks Gary.

you cant give a candy to a child only to take it back. evolution is never about going back to how things were.

I enjoyed watching some events, but in the long run the current way of running the games isn't sustainable. If the IOC keeps pushing the limits, there soon won't be olympic games at all, because no country will be capable and / or willing to host them. Especially winter games are causing huge environmental problems. Lillehammer 1994 was amazing, but I think we're past the point of no return.

Closing ceremony's been very cool.

Another olympics come and gone. Really enjoyed it, shame I couldnt watch more!

A lot of Olympic facilities are wasted and just become unused after the games. It actually makes sense for Beijing to host another Olympics so they can use some of their facilities again before they go to waste. The only issue now is bringing in snow from other places for the outdoor events.
Harbin would've been a better location for playing the sports but there is some concern about having enough Chinese people making the trek there to watch the games. That and it seems like the Chinese politicians love to show off Beijing.

Clearly the IOC doesn't value that line of logic.

The IOC might not but I'm sure that has entered the line of thinking of some of the cities submitting their bids. China is planning on reusing the famous facilities from the last time that have reportedly been gathering dust in the mean time.
I'm a resident of LA county and I really wished we lost out on the 2028 games. That said, LA has actually been pretty good in terms of not having facilities go into disuse after the games. Compared to Rio and Beijing, LA's Olympic facilities are still in use. I'm expecting a massive boondoggle for the 2028 games but it has more to do with the likely outrageous cost overruns of retrofitting current facilities rather than the outrageous cost overruns of making new ones.
