if you can make something better than xRAPM... go for it. if it is better you'll get paid. something better will come along. at this point, xRAPM > RAPM > APM > Vanilla Plus/Minus.

i use xRAPM to rank starters the exact same way he does. he made it. its his.
Oladipo sure looked liek the best starting shooting guard in the NBA tonight against the Raptors. what is his xRAPM? o ya. hmmmm
its a solid tool to aid in the evaluation of players and another step in the evolution of Plus/Minus stats.

dude, your point was Engelmann does not use the stat this way. and he does. so that point is done. you are incorrect about Engelmann. i am correct on how Engelmann uses the stat.
now you are moving the goal posts by discussing what hte results of the stat are.... but i'll go there just for laughs.
yes, according to the DRPM stat in the REGULAR SEASON this is correct. Covington's regular season defense is better than Kawhi's. Covington is a very , very good defender. you should try watching him.
i'd say Leonard expends so much energy on the offensive end that he takes plays off on defense in the regular season. Covington let's every one else do the hard work on the Philly offense. He catches and shoots a lot. This gives Covington much more energy for defense and he takes off almost no plays during the regular season.
This changes in the playoffs. Leonard cranks it up a notch and stops taking plays off. I'd say if they are both playing at peak levels Covington and Leonard are approximately equal defensively. its hard to say.
Last year, the Spurs defense was better with Kyle Anderson on the floor than Kawhi Leonard. and for the 10th time i've already explained the curious case of Kyle Anderson.
back to Leonard though. According to RPM the top 3 small forwards last year were... LBJ, Leonard and Durant. in that order... seems plausible to me.
and according to RPM this year, Victor Olidepo is the #1 starting shooting guard.. and damn.. he sure looked like it tonight.

ESPN "writers" didn't make the stat. Engelmann made it and licensed it to them. Engelmann uses it to rank starters. end of story. i showed u one example.. i'm too lazy to show you 10 more examples of ENgelmann using the stat to rank starters.
i'm using the stat the same way he uses it.

he isn't really a "click bait" guy. he has 3400 followers. No one wants to discuss Eigenvectors or orthogonal diagonalization of matrices. He is a "sell my analytical services" to an NBA team guy.
and if you want to take shots at the guy's analytics work .... its just polemics... make something better guy.
Love's DRPM is 0.28. So he is not the 5th best PF defender.

JimmiC it's getting boring to be honest. You may try your hardest to have a reasonable and intelligent discussion with the proper use of data and statistics, but JimmyJRaynor cannot and will not engage in an intelligent discussion, not because he has some clever evil scheme or agenda that he wants to push, but simply because JimmyJRaynor does not have the capacity to be intelligent and reasonable.
And to be more honest, no one cares about this advanced stats here, not unless they are accurate and reliable, and JimmyJRaynor is beyond obviously ignorant what that kind of advanced stats look like, much less how to analyze it. We are here mostly to enjoy the games, the highlight, and some juicy rumors. By engaging in a prolonged debate against him, you are just legitimizing him as if your arguments are equal.

this thread has basically become a dick measuring contest on advanced analytics and it's pretty annoying

This is a good continuation of the end of the year arguments we had last season. You need to look at several metrics to make a determination. If only one metric is pointing at a conclusion, that seems suspect. I believe JimmyJ argued that Lebron was clearly the best player last season based off of one metric, while I did not see much corroborating evidence in the other metrics.

If I'm around next year I'll start the season with sports betting

It's long been known JimmiC. JimmyJRaynor is incapable of honest and intelligent discussion. I even forwarded him the pm about what other people think of him here so he could at least try to be reasonable. He doesn't get it. Find someone else honest and intelligent to discuss this topic with, and I'm sure the whole thread will be in on the discussion.

I watched the Griz vs Cavs game last night and I think the Griz should trade Gasol and Conely while they still have value. They are falling to far back and there style just doesn't seem be quite good enough. They played as well as they could and lost. I get they will be better when conely gets back, but tyreke Evans played amazing and they still lost. Conley is a superstar and just signed max, and is a generally good dude. I hope he can find a team where he can maximize his potential.

Cavs are starting to hit their stride... until IT and Rose returns lol
