The problem with NO is that they messed up on a lot of free agent signings that totally wrecked their cap situation. They ended up having to let go of good players because the bad ones were eating up their cap. I think they may have whiffed on players they traded draft picks for as well.

People get stupid with "qb with potential" but not only are you gonna have to trade for him you are then gonna have to pay him. I still think the best strategy is take a guy in the 3rd and 4th and make the rest of your team super strong. Paying these mediocre QB's 25 mill and trading your whole drafts for potential is stupid to me. Idk. A lot of franchise qbs were very high picks, like Luck, Mariota, Winston, Rivers, Eli Manning, Newton and Roetlisberger. Some were late 1st (Bridgewater), early 2nd (Brees, Carr) etc. Good qbs drafted 3rd round or later are sensations, especially if they make an impact as rookies (Wilson, Prescott.) I have no idea how to find a good qb or build a tram. Everything can work out great, and everything can fail miserably.

I have no idea how to find a good qb or build a tram. Everything can work out great, and everything can fail miserably. It seems pretty clear to me that, most of the time, its nearly impossible to know if a QB will be awesome (in other words, even Peyton Manning could have just been Eli Manning), but there are some guys with super high floors (IMO Manning, Luck, Matt Ryan fit this), and others with super high ceilings (Cam, Winston, Wentz, Rodgers, Cutler) that are totally worth taking in the 1st, particularly if they have started enough in college to show you they aren't going to implode (like JaMarcus). The problem is trading up for (or trading for, or paying huge money to) high risk-mid ceiling guys. In instances where you lack a high-ceiling QB, its best to just build the rest of your team and take QBs (if you like them!) in the middle rounds (or in the early rounds if you think a gem has dropped to you like Derrick Carr or Rodgers) and just build towards 8-8, knowing that an 8-8, 9-7 team with above-average QB play on a rookie deal is the 2013-2015 Seahawks.

Giving up next year's first rounder and much more to move up a few spots this year is just really dumb on so many levels. If a team is Bill Belichick's favorite trading partner, they should really be questioning their strategy.
