None (well, I suppose Excel). I've never done this before for football, but here's what I do for my fantasy baseball league which is also points based:

-Generate rankings that are position independent by determining how many players are played at each position each week. To do this, I figure out the "average" player at each position and subtract that player's number of points from each players to determine values for last season. For example, if you play 2 RBs in a 10 team league, you take the average of the 10th and 11th best RBs and subract from everyone. Repeat all positions.
-Now you should have an idea of how valuable everyone was last year relative to their "replacement". This permits you to develop somewhat of a tier system. Note that if there's a bunch of QBs that generated 20 points above replacement but few RBs that did that, the RBs would probably be more valuable.
-Once that's done, generate preseason rankings based on your new knowledge of your scoring system (and the inefficiencies involved in it).

REMEMBER THIS IF YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE ANYTHING FROM THIS POST: winning in fantasy sports (and real ones, for that matter) is all about manipulating knowledge better than your opponents. I've found there's a strong correlation in fantasy sports between preparation and success. If you know that your league favors QBs, then use that information and value them appropriately. Not everyone may have this information, which gives you an edge.

knowing the draft tendencies of your opponents is huge. if your league scoring stays the same year to year, its worth making a list of the last few years of the draft, with the opponent's position + first three picks. you can easily see trends and know whether or not your rb is gonna last past the two dudes who have boners for rbs.

Haha, yeah, some of those Jets have some really big mouths. I guess they're taking after their coach.

Milliner's comment's were a bit silly, to be sure. He struggled a bunch last season, but if he doesn't believe in himself, who will?

As for Geno, if I recall, he only said he wants to be viewed as a top 5 QB one day, not that he is one now. That's a pretty innocuous comment in my eyes.

Either way, I think if the Jets can get past the BRUTAL first half of their schedule at 3-4 or even 4-3, they could definitely make a playoff push

So I am playing in my first fantasy football league this season. It will likely be 10 man (2 havent confirmed if they are going to play), PPR with 1 QB, 2 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 flex (TE,RB,WR), 6 bench, 1 K and 1 Def. Since this is my first time playing and considering its a PPR league what are some useful tips you guys can give me? The prize for winning the league will be a jersey of the winners choice. I want it bad lol.

Believing in yourself is one thing, Making outrageous accusations is something completely different. Sherman saying this is fine, Revis as well. Hell even Grimes or Haden. But Milliner? He didn't stand out ever.

The reports I read said Geno Smith claimed he would be viewed as a Top 5 QB by the end of the season. Laughable.

and 2-5 is probably realistic for their first 7 games. It's brutal.

I'm reposting this because it's more of a mindset than a league type (or even sport) dependent methodology:

I don't. Gordon's a repeat offender and Rice has a history of being a stand up guy who does a lot of charity work. Isn't it something like four times testing positive before you even have the option to enter the league's voluntary program before you're even given your first strike? If I have my facts straight there, Gordon's behavior is a joke.

As for Rice, from what I've read and heard is that he and his fiancee were quite drunk and then became enraged with one another. Somehow, she assaulted him and he hit/pushed her once which caused her to hit her head off the railing in the elevator and go unconscious. While it's never good to commit violence, especially against someone you love, I don't see what Rice was supposed to do, let her pound on him? This video has remained private, but has been reviewed by the local authorities as well as Goodell. This is probably the most important component of the discussion. THIS VIDEO HAS NOT BEEN PUBLISHED. No charges were pressed by the Atlantic City police (which I believe they have to in the case of domestic violence) and he was found to have done nothing illegal.

Now, when the first and only video to be released was leaked by TMZ, I was perhaps irate as anyone. I saw an NFL player dragging his unconscious girlfriend around like a rag doll. I wanted Rice suspended for the year, but I and everyone else, didn't have the full story. Of course it's not okay to drag an unconscious person around, but imagine what was going through Rice's mind: he's had probably a bit too much to drink, he just was attacked by the woman he loves, he retaliated with perhaps unnecessary force, and now she's not moving on the ground. This is not a time in which rationality prevails.

I'm not saying anything or everything that Rice did was right or that I condone his actions. He clearly made mistakes, but I think the general uproar is colored by the incomplete picture we were all provided by TMZ initially. Had we all waited for the full story to come out, we may, in fact, find 2 games too harsh of a penalty.

This is probably going to sound ridiculous, but Goodell actually did send a message. Imagine if he didn't suspend Rice at all, which based on what I laid out above, he very easily could have done. With the way the story broke, that would have been a PR nightmare.

Thanks for the advice! I have another question if anyone can help. I have a strong desire to take Andre Ellington in rnd 2. I know it is a bit of a reach, but I dont want someone to snipe him from me. The more I read/watch about this guy, the more I want him as my RB2. Thoughts? Thanks again for the help.

Ok so basically it would be a little bit of a reach to take him in the 2nd round. I think he is worth the risk.

It's already a PR nightmare. I don't want to get into a debate about striking women or self-defense or provocation or whatever. But beating someone unconscious (I already sense other readers taking issue with the work "beating,") is just a worse act in the scale of human behavior than smoking marijuana.

Admittedly, Josh Gordon is stupid. If there was an NFL rule that prohibited players from owning Volvo's, that would be a stupid rule. The players would, rightfully, consider it an unreasonable affront to a players personal life choices by a silly corporate entity unduly concerned with sponsor perception. Some players might even continue to purchase Volvo's and hide that behavior from the league. If the league suspends them, we might all roll our eyes at the league's stupid pontification and hypocrisy. On the other hand, the player could just not fucking buy a Volvo.

All of this is to say, Josh Gordon is stupid, Ray Rice is a bad person and the NFL is the worst.

Get your facts out of here. Goodell needs to SEND A MESSAGE. Because that's what justice is about.

This is probably going to sound ridiculous, but Goodell actually did send a message. Imagine if he didn't suspend Rice at all, which based on what I laid out above, he very easily could have done. With the way the story broke, that would have been a PR nightmare.

I agree with everything you said except for your evaluation of Rice. Gordon is a moron, but Rice (seems) like a decent guy who did something awful.

Ok so basically it would be a little bit of a reach to take him in the 2nd round. I think he is worth the risk.

I would shy away sumply because the hype train has gone too far and you won't get him at a value. I think you're gambling pretty hard in the second, but that's a gut feeling.

bills fans: can you tell me how seantrel henderson is doing in camp? from what i've read he was pretty good against JPP in the hall of fame game and might do well enough to kick cordy glenn to RT.

I have no idea. I have hardly paid any attention to the Bills training camp. I know I'm an awful fan.

I'm reposting this because it's more of a mindset than a league type (or even sport) dependent methodology:

Honestly, its a bit of a pointless reach, no one else is going to try to outreach for him. I agree he looks good, really good, but there are options if people go for an early RB2 that people consider more solid. After the first six elite RBs most people will be waiting until round 3 or later to draft their second running back. You would be much better off drafting an elite WR in the second round, especially since you are in a PPR format. If you love him as an RB2, I expect he would still be there in the third round. Reach for him then if you desire, but be careful since he plays in the best defensive division in football.
PartinG fanboy to the max, Rain/Squirtle/Dear/Scarlett/Bbyong are cool too. I don't always watch Dota2 but when I do I have no clue what's going on. GOGO POWER RANGERS
