IT happened back in 1999 but a federal judge overturned it in 2003. They still have their trademark while they appeal and can still sue people away from making like merch even if it doesn't get overturned.
Even if all that didn't matter the NFL splits all merch sales among all teams which means they still won't feel anything from it.
|
My understanding is that the 2003 overturning of it was based on a technicality. Plus, the political climate is VERY different now than it was back then.
Interested to see what happens next.

Interested to see what happens next. did you read my post about the other things about this that made it a complete non story? Even if this goes through and doesn't get overruled they still have protection over all the merch (the copyrights and patents) and the lanham act. This is another story being written about the whole thing that means nothing at all but the writer wants it to be something.

That's the third stud LB that's out for the season from a knee injury. What a bummer.

Sheesh, poor Bills.
I've been watching the X-Files on Netflix. There's an episode in Season 4 that revolves around the Cigarette Smoking Man and what he does. For those that don't know, he's a powerful figure in an extra-governmental syndicate that fixes world affairs. It also turns out that he fixes sporting events. There's a point during the episode where he gets testy with his subordinates and he emphatically says that the Bills are not to win a Super Bowl while he's alive. Of course, this episode came out shortly after the Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row, but I still find it hilarious (sorry AgentW).

I might have asked this in this thread before, but I'll ask it again. Who's going to be out of the league first, Aldon Smith or Josh Gordon?
|
at this rate, Josh Gordon..
|
You would think someone would tell Josh Gordon that now is the time to be very careful to not get into any more trouble..
|
I think Gordon will be out of the league first, of those two, but Smith has a better chance of being cut by his team. The Browns may keep him on the inactive roster since releasing a guy who can be the most dominant receiver in the game ain't easy for a team with no other pass catchers. San Fran has a deeper defense than Cleveland does an offense...

This seems like the appropriate place for this:
Is there a particular opening game any of you are looking forward to?
I mean, personally, I am excited for all them but I absolutely cannot wait to see the Packers - Seahawks game. Two of the very best teams in the NFL on opening night? Fantastic.

I am going to that hawks/packers game so YES I agree and that is my pick
|
Normally I am a huge fan iNcontroL but I will be rooting against you that night!
Will be really interesting to see how Seattle's secondary matches up with a team that can run it and spread them out. At the same time, is Green Bay's O-Line as improved as they hope it is? The Seahawks will definetly find out.
Hype!

i'm personally looking forward to SNF with the broncos and colts. i remember last year everyone was wtf'ing over luck beating manning, so i'm excited to see whether manning can get revenge.

Saints at Falcons is a good one. Bengals at Ravens is another. Unfortunately, the late game slate is a little dry.
|
Naturally I'm excited to see the Jets opener vs the Raiders, simply because of my fandom, but also I think the Redskins vs Texans will be the most intriguing game. Two teams that made the playoffs two years before, then had the worst two records in the league the next. Carolina vs Tampa Bay also has potential to be a really telling game about two rivals that could be moving in opposite directions...
|
Tampa vs Carolina will be a good one I agree. We'll definetly get to see if the changes Tampa Bay made are gonna pay off or not. Will also be interesting to see which Cam Newton shows up this season.
