I had the feeling that Real Madrid especially capitalized on their air superiority. Robben did a good job in terms of applying pressure in my opinion, but he always had to face 2 or even 3 opponents. Same for Ribery, but he only did fine at the beginning of game 2. There was no going through the centre, so Bayern inevitably had to carry the ball to the corner, where Alaba and Lahm had a lot of space. They consequently had a LOT of crosses and corners throughout both games but for what? Real (especially Pepe and Ramos) won everything in the air so all crosses and corners didn't bring any success. That is why Bayern were so undangerous in front of Madrid's goal and even conceded two goals through headers.
Now Pep dislike crossings, so I guess they just don't practice it too often. And when Mandzukic was out, who was even supposed to beat Pepe in the air? An alternative would have been to play more through the centre, but as other people already pointed out, Bayern don't have these kind of midfielders. Surprising plays with a very limited space is nothing for Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Müller. It might be more suitable for Götze and Thiago, but Götze would only get 20 minutes per game and Thiago is injured.
Bayern will be MUCH more dangerous next year with Lewandowski though
I think the main issue is, who do Bayern have to "pass through the middle". With Peps Barca as mentioned numerous times, he had Messi Xavi Iniesta passing through the middle. Bayern, they have Ribery and Robben, 2 fantastic awesome WINGERS. They can't come inside and find the awesome pass that often. Robben was on the right doing really well but like you said had 3 people blocking him from cutting inside or going down the line. Same with Ribery. They play outwide thus they aren't the best for that. They need someone else spear heading the play maker role.
Is surely how they should be lining up next season right? Gotze can he be the play maker to find that exquisite pass through the middle? But if you play that formation where the hell does Muller play Wonder if many people will be sold/leave Bayern this summer.
Also those who think this summer is going be important for managers need to remember these summers are SHITE for managers. Hardly ANY business will be done until the END of July. Most of it in August. With the World Cup going on everything just shuts down. It's really hectic for managers without their main squad, especially the top teams, Bayern Real Barca etc. For us as fans though it will be an awesome football football football summer. Champs League into international squad debate into friendlies into world cup into domestic talk into transfers into friendlies into start. Oh boy :D
Pep already showed what he wanted earlier in the year, but kinda "sacrificed" it for short term success and because of injuries. In my opinion his final vision with everyone healthy will be a very fluid 4-1-4-1:
-------------Lewandowski--------------------- Ribery/Reus(called it) - Thiago - Müller/Götze - Robben ----------Lahm / Martinez / Thiago ------- Alaba - New guy/Martinez - Boateng - Lahm/New guy
Honestly i think Kroos might be even selled and i dont see Schweinsteiger having a big role in the system.
Your know your system is bad when you dont have a place for the best holding mf in the world ^_^
Micro, Pep's Barca was also doing gegen pressing but when they got ball, they were giving it to back and opponent was able to balance their defence. But Umschaltspiel, you catch opponents defence unbalanced and attack directly. It's the best way to play for German players because it depens on both phsyic and discipline.
oh and I thought Germany was going to win WC then i see Lahm on the midfield, Löw is a dumb.
im so happy with finals! I wouldnt mind both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid. Awesome story lines for both games.
Madrid derby anddddd Mourinho vs Real Madrid.
That's absurd. Chelsea-Atletico game was even worse then this Real-Bayern tie. I hope Atletico make it to the final because I think they have slightly more desire to attack then Chelsea and having been successful against them in Liga maybe willing to give them a game.
It's like the football world is completely backwards on here. Somehow short passing attacking style play is the villain while defensive counter oriented Catennacio is great football. The problem isn't the short passing attacking style, it's the defensive setups that make these matches a snooze. Three of the four teams in the semi's have been too cowardly to try and win the game and have been content to let their opponents run into a wall of spikes. Bayern ran into whole heartedly and the Chelsea-Atletico was a wash with both teams thinking the same thing. It's been a dire semifinals especially considering the talent on display. Maybe the finals will redeem it but I doubt it.
how on earth is real madrid playing anything like Catennacio? And how on earth is Bayern playing attacking style of play (in this match)? They're not attacking.. They're taking forever trying to build up attacks and it ends up producing nothing. Granted I only watched about 75 minutes of yesterday's game, but during that period I think Bayern had like, one shot on goal and two off target?
Like, I totally get the criticism of Chelsea. I think what they are doing is fair enough and I think they often produce extremely entertaining matches - granted sometimes because it's really dramatic and not because of great skill being showcased, but I used to hate watching Italy win 1-0 so I can understand this. But I do not understand how this Bayern is somehow considered a case for attacking football while Real Madrid is considered defensive football after Real Madrid just beat them 4-0 on away field. (three set pieces whatever, they kept attacking through the entire game.)
It's like, what I ideally like to watch when I watch football is teams that try to rapidly attack whenever they get the ball. To me, this is what attacking football looks like. Chelsea sometimes plays like this, but when they are content with the result (like the previous leg vs Atletico), they don't even bother countering - and this is obviously boring. That's what was often the case with Italy during knockout leg of championships as well, they'd stop even bothering to counter once they got a 1-0 lead. Real Madrid however, is like the prime example of this (attacking immediately every time.) The difference is that they can mount attacks with only 3-4 players because those players are so fast, so skillful, and they're fighting against defenses that aren't stable. Once you go down the tiki taka path however, you always ensure that your opponents defense is going to be shut down because they have enough time to stabilize before the attack comes. And then it ends up being boring - at least unless you have a messi, xavi iniesta trio capable of opening up anything - because there's just a whole lot of passing trying to look for openings that do not appear.
For me the most fun matches are when these two attack as quickly as you can philosophies meet each other - like Real Madrid vs Dortmund last season.

Mandzukic won many headers in the box you know. The problem was he never had any support. The "so called attacking" Bayern team left Mario alone in the box.

Well i put out Kroos and Schweinsteiger because their "best" positions doesnt exist in my imagined system. Of course i could be wrong, Guardiola knows infinitely more about it then i do.
I dont really get your argument. You say German teams should play a counter attack style (the offensive part of "Umschaltspiel") but the arguably best team in the world at this (Real) got rid of his only german last summer.
Also you have to keep in mind that "Gegenpressing (immediate pressing the ball after losing it)" is mainly a defensive strategy. It maybe doesnt look like it because it happens in the midfield/opponent half but winning the ball and attack directly is not the main purpose. The first target is to pressure the first pass to the forwards into a miss or into an imprecise pass which is easier to defend. After that comes securing the ball "they cant score without the ball"- mentality and the third and last objective is to attack immediately if possible.
Also you have to keep in mind that besides Brazil, Spain and maybe Chile everyone will park the bus against germany. Tough to counter attack if the other guys doesn't want the ball in the first place.

Germany has heading monster Klose in a World Cup. They will be fine without counter attacking. :p
I just read a Kicker article: Guardiola blames lack of ball possession for the loss 2012/2013 season Bayern had in average LESS than 50% ball possession and everyone called them attacking monsters, tanks. They also scored highest amount of goals in Bundesliga ever. Guardiola really thinks ball possession = goals, doesnt he?
The reason why teams like Real or Dortmund dont have high ball possession is because they always put everything into their FAST counter attacks. They keep the ball less than a minute before a goal chance. Bayern had ball possession yesterday and needed 10min+ to create half a chance.

As for the whole 'which football is better' its all down to which team you cheer for and personal bias. You don't get to a CL semi-final by being a bad football team, you did something right.
On April 30 2014 07:22 Mensol wrote: A German team like Bayern shouldnt play Tiki-Taka. It's Spanish football, So signing Pep was a terrible idea from Bayern's board.
They should've sign a coach who knew gegen pressing and Umschaltspiel(Basicially German football heh). This football style suits perfectly for German teams. Umschaltspiel was the main reason of Jupp's success. He perfected it in the last season but unfortunately he retired before dominating scene for at least two years.
What is Umschaltspiel? If i were to explain it in one sentence, You win the ball and attack instantly/directly.
Dortmund is playing with this style as well. As you know they dominated Real Madrid 2-0 at quarter finals.
Its not about Spanish or German style. The problem I just saw is that Bayern doesnt have the great team for playing that kind of football like he had in Barcelona. He doesnt have Xavi or Iniesta to make those passes and Messi to break up anything in the defence. So the problem is just that, not nationalities. I think there is no team right now that can efectively do that kind of soccer in a international level, not even Real Madrid.
And Busquets, dont foget him. It is like the perfect defensive midfield for tiki taka. He can defend alone without help, initiate, pass, dribbling sometimes. He was so important in the golden years of Barcelona.
I think Javi Martinez can do the same in Bayern, dunno why he wasnt in the lineup at the start of the match

We need all of us shouting tonight brah. Damn going be tense! Anything can happen, knock out football at its best.
Mourinho remarked dryly to the press: "You know, at this moment, football is full of philosophers - people who understand much more than me, people with fantastic theories and philosophies. It's amazing.
"But the reality is always the reality: A team that doesn't defend well or doesn't score lots of goals, if they concede lots of goals, is completely in trouble. A team without balance is not a team. When they have the ball, we have to try and stop them scoring. When we have the ball, we want to try and score. This is football - the football that I know.
"I remember saying in my first period here, if you have a goalkeeper like Petr Cech who puts the ball in the opponents' box and a striker like Didier Drogba who wins everything in the air, why play short? Because you are stupid?
"If your opponents are very fast on the counter and want space behind your defensive line, if you give them that space you are stupid."
Yeah i watched that live last night, was fucking classic Mourinho. Love it when he tells it straight xD
Reason why both Atletico and Chelsea will make the finals very ermmm "boring" for the neutral lol. We will go, here you go Real take the ball, now how are you going to counter ^_^ Then Real will get raped on the counter by Atletico or Chelsea
