Poor Teemu is left outside of the bus to fend for himself!!!!! In other news, I can't believe pedro is only 26. He's a complete beast, I really thought he was like a wily old veteran of 32 or something who has loads of skill but is on his way out. But no, he's a youngster.

I just read recently that "Last weekend only 65 English players started in the Premier League with another 14 coming on as substitutes". I just counted the German players that started last weekend in Bundesliga. 102 players started with 34 coming in as substitutes. Mind you, Bundesliga has only 18 teams so this is with a whole match less than PL. I did count players that have double citizenship, so you can maybe substract 10-15 players that are no longer eligible to play for Germany. To make things worse nearly no English players play abroad whereas quite a few German players do. Mertesacker, Khedira, Klose, Gomez, Özil, Podolski, Schürle ... So the pool of players Löw can choose from is a lot bigger than the pool Hodgson has. I didn't count for Spanish players in La Liga, but I guess the number might be even bigger. I don't want to discuss whether or not PL is the best league, but it's definitely the hardest one for homegrown talent to get enough playing time to evolve. In a way the success of PL hurts the English national team. And don't forget that although the academys are great, quite a few of the players there come from foreign countries (France, Germany etc.). In a way supporting the national teams of those countries ![]()

And the Europa league reward is pathetic by comparison for EPL clubs, unless you have such a big squad you can easily field b teams and get to the higher knockout stages. It's clearly a matter of motivation. I do agree with your point about tactics - it's probably because the teams are so constantly buying new players that they never have time to fully gel tactically. Yeah I understand that. I am talking about the higher knock-out rounds though. Once you reach quarter finals you should take it seriously, especially to your fans it looks good if you take a European Cup serious. The La Liga teams play as many matches as the BPL teams and they also get retarded scheduling sometimes. Last year Barca had to play PSG I think (? don't remember, but it was in knockout stages) with 1 week in between. They got Real Madrid in the weekend. All I was arguing though was the depth of the BPL against La Liga on the top 8 spots or w/e though. Sure they loan out their talents to championship sides etc., but they're not getting the best experience playing in those leagues. I think to improve the English national team, it'd be great if they loan out their players to secondary leagues in Western Europe (Eredivisie, Portugese league, Belgian league for example) where they might get to play European football but at the very least play 30 matches in a year on a good technical level. In Holland they actually don't like the fact that young 16 year old Dutch kids get bought because they'd get better if they get to play in the Eredivisie from the age of 17. This line of thinking gets a lot of exposure lately and I think it's helping. Top talent should be playing matches on the highest level that they can handle from ages 18-21, not play with the youth teams of Arsenal or Chelsea where there really isn't any prestige to be had.

http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/premature-call-ups-creating-generation-gap-england Players get called up much too early for England. Instead of staying with various youth teams and building chemistry with the other talented players their age, and being in a no-pressure environment where they can hone their skills and not be afraid to make mistakes, they are thrown into the spotlight, and get to warm the bench for the older players, instead of playing games. For as much hate as Stuart Pearce got, look at all the players he was missing at the U21 Euros. Quality players like Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Phil Jones, Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley (IIRC even players like Danny Welbeck and Kyle Walker were eligible for the tournament), etc. If England actually brought their best youth players, like the other teams did, maybe they wouldn't have lost every game, and the next generation of players would have gained valuable experience playing with each other in a competitive environment. Though I hate to act like an armchair manager, I agree with the article that England should look at older players like Fabian Delph, instead of rushing Ross Barkley into the spotlight. And I think someone like Gabby Agbonlahor should get a callup over Raheem Sterling, though I think Raheem Sterling's callup has to do with cap-tying him, since he's still eligible for Jamaica. And I guess England are in kind of a tight spot; they have no room for error or experimentation after bottling it in the earlier qualifiers. Finally, I think the Premier League doesn't place enough emphasis on youth. Teams are under pressure to make signings and buy big team players, and it's seen as a sign of weakness to forego signings and give your young players a chance.

Players don't care about tv deal and revenues, when they are on the pitch, they play to win! Even if you still want to argue that it affects the quality of the teams because they rest starters etc. Guess what, champions league's money is equally huge for teams in other top leagues. If anything else, it tests the depth of both teams, it's an even field. What I dislike though is that Europa League is worth almost as many UEFA points as the Champion's League, which is not really fair imo. That's why today we have Porto and Benfica in pot A.

It's the same bullshit excuse that French presidents say when their teams lose in the early rounds... I am like, no your team just sucks! Even if you still want to argue that it affects the quality of the teams because they rest starters etc. Guess what, champions league's money is equally huge for teams in other top leagues. If anything else, it tests the depth of both teams, it's an even field. Getting into the Champions League is a big thing of course. But the amount of TV revenue teams get + the actual positional rewards they get from the League mean that one or two places ANYWHERE in the league can mean ten million easily and positions 17-5 are all very very important in the prem. http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2012/05/14/where-the-money-went-premier-league-prize-and-tv-payments-for-2011-12-150501/ When you combine TV and raw rewards, winning the league is worth £60 million and coming last worth still over £30 million. That makes Europa insignificant if you are talking about only reaching the quarters or semis. It will be worth more in the future as well, given the new Sky deal for like £5 billion over three years. And psychology tests have proven that when completing physical tasks, people do them better if they are offered a higher reward. The bonuses for placing higher in the league will always be higher than getting a few stages up in Europa, but also the fact that the fans desperately care about placing higher in the league and barely even turn up to watch Europa matches also plays a huge psychological part. To be honest I'm sure more teams care about the FA Cup than the Europa league. Random study about incentives: http://snowfly.com/pdf/Vol16_03_46condly.pdf I think a lot of the discussion here has been fuelled by the fact that in the Champions League English teams have been sucking hard in the last few years. I think we might see that in the future as a small blip but who knows.
