The inability of Wings defense to clear out Chicago players around the crease is brutal, feels like every rebound that Howard gives up turns into a scoring chance for them.

It is a trash defense, with only one legitimate NHLer, one potential NHLers and the rest basically AHL guys. Jimmy Howard just bailed it out for 7 wins so far. Had the Wings ended up playing a more defensive team in the first round it would have been a repeat of the Predators series from last year, a quick 4-1 exit. Its not as bad as you make it sound. Holland isn't an idiot and the Wings don't need THAT much to fix their problems. It also doesn't hurt that the D men are young and developing still (plus one of them only played like 1 game of the playoffs and he was playing pretty good before he went down). They need scoring depth more then anything. Statistically the D wasn't bad (Jimmy masks a lot) so adding 1 maybe 2 top 6 D men and they would be fine. They need some God damn skill to go along with Dats and Z though. The young forwards have potential but they still need time.

Players make a similar stick check on each other constantly throughout the game, never gets called. Now, in high pressure situation in the playoffs suddenly its a penalty shot? Wasn't their a Red Wings breakaway that got broken up by a diving Blackhawk who hit the stick, and NOTHING was called? A penalty shot is to be award whenever a player who has a clear path between the goalkeeper and himself is fouled in any way and is unable to attempt a shot because of it. He got slashed in the hands and lost the puck on a breakaway. Ya that happens 100000 times a game and goes uncalled (should be called everytime imo) but on a breakaway it cannot not be called unless the ref has a different job lined up.

Holland isnt an idiot, but he is addicted to paying a ton of money to old players for no reason. Look at Samuelson signing or Tootoo or look at Cleary as a *top 6* forward. Look at Erickson and Quincey. At Abdelkader playing as a first line winger for god sakes! (No one can take away the fact that he is trying but he doenst have the hands to be a Burrows type pest-quasi-first line forward. The dude belongs down on the 3rd and Datsyuk deserves a real power forward for the first time in forever.) Its not 2007 anymore, players arent going to take pay cuts to play in Detroit, as the Sutter fiasco showed. The fact that he knew Lidstrom could retire at any point from 2008 onward and did nothing to have an even remote plan B is brutal. This years success is all thanks to Babcock coaching the shit out of the team and Jimmy Howard finding a genuine God mode. Erickson, Quincey and Smith do not belong on an NHL playoff ice surface, they just dont have the skill set or mental fortitude to be out there for more than 16 minutes a game and it shows. Smith has literally scored more goals on the Red Wings than Toews and Kane combined! The only silver lining I can see in this all is that since Holland doesnt want to give him any talent, Babcock decided to treat this playoff as a training season, which is why Smith is out for so much ice time. Which is great and all, but the let down of blowing a 3-1 lead still stings -- which is why this is such a long post. And of course the fact that the way this series is going. Game 1 and 5 they simply didnt show up, the other games they did. And they are leading the league in blowing 3rd period leads!

hank has one more year on his contract. i am of the mindset that torts and slats get next year to prove themselve.s if theyre not a clear cut top 4 or 5 team in the east, they should both get the axe and start fresh since slats has wasted half of hanks career with mediocre teams that he has to drag to the playoffs. if richards doesnt bounce back up to the high 60s low 70s range at least, he should be bought out at the end of next year.

Half of me wants the Sharks to lose tonight to get the seemingly inevitable heartbreak over with. it all depends on how quick plays, otherwise the Sharks had dominated the Kings throughout the series. It would be a shame if that fake Sutter wins another playoff series on the back of a goalie, again. Anyway, at least as sellers at the deadline you got rid of a lot of slow, deadwood. Just buyout Havlat and the team is looking good, especially once Edmonton and Calgary drop down and give up free wins[ed. wings, i guess they are really on my mind] all season long.

Surprisingly, the Sharks prospects actually seem to be panning out well. Hertl, in particular, is looking like he may translate into an elite player at the NHL and be a good replacement for Thornton in the years to come. We have some good D prospects coming along, too.

Now, Niemi clearly has it covered and the ref has lost sight of the puck while Brown just sits there and slashes at his pad, and that is a goal. NHL refs are more and more like random call generators. The puck was sitting infront of the goalies pad/skate. All Neime did was hold the post and not move. Thats about as uncovered as it gets
