Stars @ Canucks. What a game.
When SC2 came for BW, I cried. Now LoL/Dota2 comes for SC2, and I laugh. \o/

Imagine if Lehtonen didn't get injured. It would be 2-2 or 2-1 Dallas right now IMO. Vancouver looked soft the other night against Minny in the 3rd as well. They seem kind of overrated these days...

So Toews fought Thorton today. He was back checking Thorton and going after him early in the game. Thorton was like WTF are you doing the entire time and didn't really want to fight him even when they finally dropped the gloves.

I'm just curious as this is very out of character from Toews, and I think this is his 3rd career fight. They both play for Team Canada as well. Anyone knows if there is a story behind this, or did Toews just decided randomly to hate Thorton tonight?

Taking Giroux first overall in a salary cap pool isn't working out too well so far.

I only got to see the 1st+2nd then had to go to work. Kinda funny Brenden Dillon scored the winner against his hometown team. I went to highschool with him (he's 1 year younger than me) and had his mom as a math teacher one year.

Coming from a Hawks fan what was watching the game last night. Toews and Thornton have a history of bad blood. Toews hit Thornton on the back check and Thornton went down like a cheap hooker to the hit and definitely embellished how bad the hit was. Then after he got up he kinda laughed in Toews's face and Toews kinda snapped after the play. Which ended up with a Sharks power play into the Sharks taking a horrible penalty into a 4v4 into a Hawks goal, but after the fight the Hawks played a hell of a lot better after the fight then the Sharks did

Lol, yeah that's even more egregious than Briere vs Pitt last playoffs.

Good article about hockey analysis (or lack thereof) from The Globe and Mail:

The linesmen have just not been on lately. To think Karlsson's injury could have been avoided if they just blew the play down when the puck went out of play.

yeah i can definitely see how it would be kind of hard for a casual fan to grasp. my two buddies were kind of confused and overwhelmed when i tried sending them some of that analysis you did a few weeks ago. the biggest thing is that outside of zone starts you gotta take a few minutes to read and understand it all. theyre baseball fans idk how much they care about advanced stats there.

on that note, how often are advanced stats mentioned by tv analysts in baseball??

thornton has always been a douche throughout his career(like every players that eventually plays with the bruins), no wonder other players don't like him.

He's definitely not a Jack Johnson type where he's pure offense and fucking horrible in his own end, that's for sure.

speaking of the Leafs, lol

i hate to break this to you.
but , the leafs look like a well coached team. Randy Carlyle is doing a good job. As long as Reimer stays healthy the Leafs will finish someplace from 7 to 10 in the east. I was hoping they'd end up in 15th so they could get a decent player.

when perennial goaltending superstars Scrivens and Reimer have given up only 33 goals in 16 games ( empty netters dont count ).
that is the sign you have a well coached hockey team.

I can't comment on TV baseball, since most baseball I follow is over the radio (I just hate most of the TV crews). And from the odd game I listen to, it's actually mentioned fairly often. Especially stuff that's easier to grasp like WAR - maybe it's because baseball announcers are so good at filling space with conversation that they naturally grasp at any interesting thing to talk about.

What you said about advanced stats being kind of tough to grasp to the average fan is really the problem. I mean, you watch that Don Cherry video in the article and it pretty much sums everything up. "Well, this objective statistic used to analyze this player over the course of the entire season doesn't gel with my saw-him-good viewpoint and impression gleaned from watching a couple of shifts which allowed me to jump to an unreasonable conclusion therefore it's all bogus." The average hockey fan is much more comfortable with taking the "STRONG-LEGS-HARD-ON-THE-FORECHECK-BIG-STICK" Pierre McGuire approach to hockey analysis because it allows them to have a say on the game simply by repeating other people's meaningless opinions and doesn't require any effort. You can tell them that some defender on their team absolutely bleeeeeds chances, but they'll counter with "I saw a couple shifts of him yesterday and ERMAHGERD SHOT BLOCK" or some shit. It's useless. They assume their limited view of a player they watched in a couple of shifts in a couple of games is somehow more relevant. People don't understand sample-size and bias.

Plus, it's not easy to put these stats in context. A person needs to not only know what the stats mean (sometimes a challenge in itself), but also how they may favor certain types of players, how it relates to the player's role, how different team styles affect the stat, and so on. It takes some effort to form the picture, but once built, the picture is interesting to look at.

It's not like benching Komisarek or Liles is a big thing.

And btw, a big Good Job to the Habs for the #1 spots in East (currently). !!

At this point who gives the Hawks their first regulation loss? Their games for the rest of the month are Sharks, Columbus and Edmonton at home then at Saint Louis. Columbus and Edmonton are back to back Sunday/Monday followed by 2 days off before Saint Louis. Barring "trap games" against Edmonton and Columbus I could see the Hawks making it to at least St. Louis still without a regulation loss.
