I started 5/3/1 but I'm not sure I like how slow the progression is, I feel I can be making faster gains. The problem is it's summer and I'm vain and am cutting so I need something low-volume, which makes 5/3/1 pretty awesome. Anyone know a low-volume intermediate program with faster progression than 5/3/1?
what makes 5/3/1 so good is the sustainability of it. You might not get faster gains but you prolly get more gains in the end.
Also slightly offtopic, but if anyone knows proteinshakes that actually taste half decent, pls tell me how/where. Mine taste absolutely disgusting, and I usually cant even down all of it. That's why I mix it to youghurt which is fine I guess, but someone told me that the proteins in milk products slow down the recovery aspect of proteins or something? dunno tho. ATM I don't even feel that I need recovery all that much, I feel pretty fresh each time I go to the gym. I just need the proteins, so I guess its not a problem
Thissss. I have been planning on buying protein shakes forever but haven't yet because of the horrible taste memories from the last time I had them way back in high school. Maybe they were terrible because I mixed them with water and not milk?
chocolate protein shakes with water are fucking tasty. Just don't dilute them that much I guess?
Vanilla Yogurt (2 spoonfuls) Cup of Milk 2 Scoops of any Vanilla protein powder ( i use walmart brand ) 1 whole small banana 2 cubes of ice Any amount of water
I just started making these and they are amazing. i actually want to drink them every day just because they are so good
I walked into the gym today and decided to test myself. Failed a deadlift PR at 147.5 kg. But busted out 2 singles at 140kg for good measure. Then headed to the squat rack which I have largely been ignoring lately. Got a 10kg squat PR! 1x120kg at a BW of 78kg. Wasn't really expecting it to feel so light. Could have got in 1-2 more reps. Not bad considering I've only squatted 13 times this year and not over 100kg since November last year.
Also it's coming up to my year lifting anniversary in two days. I can still remember that first squat with 40kg and deadlift with 50kg. TLHF hwaiting.

you must have it good over there then, because the chocolate protein powder that I've tried out is really disgusting. I don't know how anyone could even call it chocolate flavoured, because it's anything but. I also tried out blueberry/raspberry, but while the taste was more neutral (didnt taste of berries either lol), the smell made me want to gag. And while being completely honest, I'm not even picky about my food. I can drink/eat just about anything and lots of it, but these have been beyond me (except with yoghurt, thankfully lol)
Dunno about vanilla flavour. One storekeeper told me that she didnt like it since the taste was so artificial.

Optimum Nutrition is really tasty, I use the double chocolate and absolutely love it. Look forward to it every day. It's on the expensive side tho, but I bought two 10lbs bags on a sale and it wasnt so bad.
I mix it with milk, it tastes a lot better than with water. But it isn't horrible with water.

You should be good to go with any of the vanilla flavors out there, so long as you mix them with milk instead of water. I have yet to find a protein powder that doesn't make me want to gag in water.

squat 3x5: 60kg -> 70kg, Still easy. dislocating shoulders with a wooden stick really works wonders, I couldnt hold the bar with the proper form, but 2-3 mins of that exercise and I had no problems. My form has been improving, so the lifts even seem easier than when I began! Deadlift 1x5: 70kg -> 100kg Still having a somewhat easy time, ofc its really heavy, but once I get going I complete my reps no problem Bench press 3x5: 40kg -> 47.5kg Overhead press 3x5: 27.5kg 3x5 -> 32.5kg Yeah I'm a wimp I know lmao. getting the form is right is hard since especially in this exercise I naturally try to go to bad form, which makes lifting harder.
Height: 187cm (6'3) weight: 70kg -> 73.5kg
Of course I should mention that I purposefully started each excercise just a tad lower than what I knew I'd be able to do since I wanted to practise my form. Still, even during my first workout I was pretty close to what I thought I'd be able to lift then.
Some questions though. At what point should I introduce power clean? Also, it sucks with BP/OHP when I alternate this way when you do press on wednesday, and the next time you get to do it is on monday, so thats a 5 day break in between. (I go to the gym mondays, wednesdays, fridays) I'm thinking of doing one more week of doing DL 3 times a week, so that I've been doing SS for 3 weeks, and then get powerclean going. nice progress
bp and ohp use a lot of the same muscles. also, because the main muscle groups involved are so small (in comparison to your quads anyway), you will need the extra time to recover sooner or later.
I recommend you start power cleans as soon as possible! I wouldnt DL 3 times a week for too long because that will screw up your recovery. substitute barbell rows for power cleans if you dont want to do cleans.
I cant stand protein shakes with water.. mixing them with whole milk or yoghurt is fine.

Uhm, try getting the Vanilla flavor, and making it with a bit of chocolate or strawberry flavoring, like Nesquick, or another brand used for real shakes. The place I got one of my GI X-Ray series' at does this with their Barium, and it's EXCELLENT.
Hey how bad is it if I occasionally break from the usual SS routine (been doing it a while now and gains are slow atm) to do fun stuff like fitocracy challenges? Nothing too out there, just once in a while getting the achievement for 10 reps of 135lbs in squats rather than do the normal squat workout.
Its fun, and it keeps me interested. Will it really hurt my routine if once a week, I do ONE challenge rather than one of my normal exercises?

If it keeps you interested, I don't see why not lol. However, I'm not sure if you can keep adding weight the same way you could with SS, so your progress may slow down. Depends on the challenge, really.

Not sure for Finland, but Canada is closer to me I buy the cheapest stuff I could find, which is Body Fortress at Walmart (they have a 3-pack bundle deal). The stuff tastes awesome. I look forward to it. I'm not sure about the quality compared to other more expensive stuff, but if you have any flavor questions just ask me, I've tried at least 4 of them, all good.
Awesome what do you mix in it/what is your favourite flavour? I might pick some up this weekend. I have liked protein shakes but I mix a bunch of shit with them. I just don't have the time or money to be buying that shit to put in them all the time. And oh yeah, my girlfriend lit the blender on fire about 2 years ago and we never bought another one yet.

Whole milk. Water is ok but milk is awesome. Chocolate is the best. Chocolate peanut butter tastes like just peanut butter and doesn't mix as well. Vanilla is good, reminds me of cake. Cookies and Cream has a chocolate and coconutty flavor that grew on me. When my blender was broken I would mix peanut butter and banana with the chocolate and it was pretty stellar ^^ Edit: They also mix well enough I just shake them in these cups we got that have lids. Not perfectly blended but very much tolerable.

Been meaning to, but I haven't gotten around to it. If it's really worth listening to I'll do so soon.
The blog overall is great though, even if the diet stuff is beyond anything I'll ever care enough to try.
Ok, I have literally no idea what I'm doing with power cleans beyond watching a couple youtube videos. Any suggestions on things to correct with my form?

You're pulling with your arms. The arms in a power clean just transfer the force, the strength of the lift comes from the body, this is not an upright row. You're also holding it up with your arms at the top, not "catching" it on your shoulders, and you're not getting under the bar at all, rather making it go up until you don't need to go under it. Also, lift faster. It's a "power" movement, and it's obvious by the way you're going through it that you can do it more quickly, so do it more quickly. The idea I was given is that floor to knees should be the slowest part of the lift, knees to waist takes half as long, and waist to catch takes half as long as that.
pretty decent walk through, Not something I've looked at before, it was in the related video to your video, but it's good. Just ignore the fact that they're also doing a push press at the top.
