Everytime I try to run, my legs build up crazy amount of lactic acid. I hydrate before I run (a few hours before), I eat properly and well slept. The thing is, everytime I run for about a few minutes (just simple jogging or really light), my legs build up crazy lactic acid and its difficult to just keep going on. Or at least the sensation I get is my leg gets really tight and really painful. I used to be a short distance runner and I want to push my cardio up.
Is there something I can do to overcome this? That doesn't sound like fatigue related discomfort. Usually for me if I'm running hard my legs start to feel heavy or rubbery, but not tight and definitely not painful. Have you run much recently?
Not at all really. I've been doing a lot of muay thai and brazilian jiu jitsu for the past 6 months but not a lot of running.

Just went for a slow run to the park and then did some sprints. Nothing too extreme just 8 x ~50m. I absolutely LOVE sprinting. My mind goes completely blank and you can't think about anything at all.

Is that sports tracker a phone app? I.e. if I had a smartphone can it track me as I run...always been curious to test the accuracy of that.

Yeah its for android, ios, blackberry, windows phone and even nokia.

How do you run with your phone? Does it not bother you? It just feels too heavy and clunky to me (I have a Droid Razr). The only thing I usually carry with me during outdoor running is a single key in my pocket without any of the other keys and keychains.
I've also tried one of those Garmin runners on my wrist, but it felt just as uncomfortable

I'll be trying this out once I'm back off the DL. Curious to see if the accuracy of the GPS devices is decent at all.
I will say I run with my ipod 3rd gen all the time and have no problems, though the DNA is quite a bit larger than that, even if the weights seem similar.

I know when I went trail running with a buddy who used an app like that it wasn't very accurate. I think the less twists and turns you take the better it is though. If you're road running I bet it's good enough for tracking unless you want a very specific distance/course.

Ran my first 10k ever and after 2½ months of training I'm really proud of my results.. This was actually only my 5th run over 6 miles in 8 years so I was hoping for under 39:00 and barely did it! placed 3rd out of a field of ~200 The route and pacing

Nice run, good splits too!
I forget, did you say you used to run before?
EDIT: How on earth does it track cadence?

I ran in high school 1999 to 2003 but only really trained till my junior year and just ran races my senior year. I qualified as a walk on at UCSB with a 940 3200 at the time trail but decided not to run. I've probably ran 300 miles since 2003 and just started running again on November 1st and am now up to around 30 miles a week. I have a lot of natural talent and this time I'm going to use it! I'm actually shooting for marathon training but I'm trying to build the mileage without injury. Plan on running one in the middle of this year and want to break 3:00

Last year I decided to run a marathon right out of the gate with about two months to train. I wanted to use it as a motivation to get in shape but it back fired, I got shin splints from trying to catch up to where i should be and i finished the marathon beat to shits at 4:45. This year I have the same marathon at the end of may so just over 4 months and i want to do it right. Can anyone point me to some good guides? I have been looking around but I don't know what is good or not.

Mile goal seems okay, maybe could be more aggressive. I think you'll easily go 5:30.
5k goal is orders of magnitude and then some easy. If you can really run 5:40 mile, 24 minute 5k pace should be basically an easy run. 5:40 for the mile is roughly equivalent to a 19:30-20:00 5k.

Always really achy legs when I run more than 15 minutes straight and sore knees
Maybe I will aim for faster time though if it is achievable.

Basically what Trident said.
You say never been much of a longer distance runner, but what you have to realize is that the mile is a distance event. It's not super different from the 5k. It requires a little more speed, but both events are extremely aerobic events. The only people that might struggle with a 5k like that are 400/800 guys, but if you're one of those you should easily be able to run 50-54 second 400m and 2:10-2:15 800m with that sort of time.
For any runner capable of 5:40 though, somewhere between 7:45-8:30 pace is going to be a light jog. Around 6:45-7:00 pace should be a strong, but not brutally difficult pace for 20-25 min.

Figured id finally make a post in here. Been running since late July 2012, kind of a couch to 5k sort of thing.
Right out of the gate after doing some 3-5k runs I picked up PFS, did some physio, and started into 10ks, after about 2 months of twice a week 10ks I am now back in physio with IT band problems, fun fun. Guess that's what happens when your 28 and decide one day to get into better shape.
Been doing once every 2 days 5ks at the gym, since its so cold in Canada and last time I got stuck 3km from home with IT band pain in -14c it sucked quite a bit walking home.
Anyways, my goal is run a half marathon in March, its one of the first ones in my area ( Alberta ) for the year, and I am pretty excited about it. I don't really have a time goal in mind yet, but my 5k is around 24min at the current. I'm just hoping to stay injury free once I kick the IT band problems.
Almost like clockwork at 5k no matter if I do it in 24 min or 30min I start getting tightness and pain, beginning to wonder if its a mental thing as well. One thing im finding conflicting info on is my weight. I'm 6'4 185lb right now, I do have some upper body bulk from my work, but i'm thinking I might be a bit heavy for optimal running?

Yo guys, after taking a long ass hiatus from running, i find myself back here, at the start of a journey, last time it was a goal to run a marathon with around 9 weeks training from a longest run of 7 miles with a goal of 3:30, i ended up failing on the time and hitting a 4:07 a time way over what i could of run if i had ran sensible splits instead of a personal best 10k at the start of the race(i got a little too excited and ran like a 47minute 10k, i'd never ran a proper timed 10k before but i know i never pushed 10k's that fast in training because i always ran light in training). After my marathon i pretty much halted training completely, i was ripped apart, i couldn't walk properly for a week, that week I literally played 100hours of world of warcraft no fucking joke man ,i couldn't run properly for a month, and i had pretty much lost my stride and habit of training, i started lifting in the gym and not running at all, and while i enjoyed it, i didn't find anywhere near as much personal satisfaction and happiness as what came from running, over the christmas period i have done the sum total of fuck all, and a lack of exercise, good sleep and other factors have left me feeling depressed and generally low. running is what dragged me out of a low period last time and i hope it will do the same again. i've set myself a few goals for the year, the first goal is to run a half marathon in april, i'm running it again for a charity, and this time more in support of my best friend, my friend is someone who has never run before, he is skinny but in no ways fit or athletic, he has lost both grandparents this year and we have made the commitment to run the Leeds half marathon in support and aid of a childrens home that his grandparents started. The other commitment i have made is to take on atleast 1 more marathon this year this time hitting my original goal of 3:30, this goal is only a preliminary one and depending on my training i will probably lower it, i won't be running a marathon til probably the second half of year so i have alot more time to train and to also run a half ironman triathlon, which is a 1.2mile swim, 56 mile cycle, and a half marathon. both of these commitments are going to be extremely difficult, but with dedication i can do it. This post is half to sort of say hey and reintroduce myself into the thread, and half to look for some advice on helping someone totally new to running to get to half marathon fitness in around 3 months
TL;DR ran marathon, stopped running, stopped being active, starting again, going to get friend fit with me and get him and me to run half marathon, also running marathon and half ironman triathlon this year. also hey guys :D
