I find it amusing that the guy you answered to thinks HOI4 is a nice game, but Stellaris is a piece of junk, I have it the other way round. I waited 2-3 months for HOI4 after launch to read reviews, and still decided to buy it, but it's an absolute mess of a game. It's especially bad because of all Paradox games, this one probably needs the best AI, otherwise you end up with a motorized infantry snaking its way to Moscow. I'm still seeing pictures on the ParadoxPlaza reddit page of France not building enough units to defend its border to Germany, or the USSR throwing millions of men at enemy entrenchments with 0 success because they are so ill equipped. The game looks fantastic for PvP, but the mechanics are not suited for an AI, they just can't control them well enough.
Stellaris on the other hand is quite enjoyable, I don't think the mechanics are that bad, a few of them need to be addressed though. My problem right now is that the game is very empty, there's not much to do, and I'm waiting for the DLC to go 50% off before buying them. There need to be more events and more scripted scenarios, but this is something that is absolutely possible to achieve over time, and then there are mods. And yeah, the game needs more storytelling, although tbf EU4 also doesn't have much of that either, rulers are not particularly detailed, personality traits I believe were only added this year with Rights of Man.
I would also recommend Total War games for basic but intriguing strategy games. Shogun II is my personal favourite, I also enjoy Warhammer but I'm waiting for sales again. And I also recommend fan made Pokemon games online if it piques your interest, some of them are wonderfully well made.

Music Monday
I know I've posted about Hadestown before, but they just released a (almost) full, live cast recording and it's faaaaaaaan-fucking-tastic.
Those who aren't aware - it's the story of Orpheus and Euridice told in a modernish jazzy folk-opera. I saw this in pre-production in NYC not too long ago, and the production is just amazing.
Really hope this makes it to Broadway.

Stellaris sans Utopia/Leviathans is definitively lacking. Synthetic Dawn is neat but unless you want to play a machine empire you don't need it.
Stellaris' biggest problem right now is that the value/benefits of expansion feed into themselves too powerfully. Someone with 5 planets effectively has half the economy, fleet capacity, and production capabilities of someone with 10, and the tech penalty for expansion isn't sufficient to make up that difference.

I never claimed HOI4 was amazing, but I certainly think it is better than the Stellaris. HOI4's problems can largely be solved by playing with people. And where it can't be fixed, I can at least see why there is a level of abstraction in place. Stellaris is a boring mess and entirely too slow to play with others. I can't think of another game where I spent 75% of my time fast forwarding at the fastest possible speed while literally reading a book to pass the time.

Oh come on, fuck my company.
I was supposed to have my interview last week but the interviewer/my old manager was off sick so ok postpone. I was apparently the only internal applicant and he likes me so I was a good fit for the role allegedly. Since he was sick it's been opened up externally and now there's like 10 other people to interview and they haven't even got back to me about rescheduling the one I was supposed to have last week! So I've been sitting here stressing about it and having prepared and now I don't even know (doubt) it will even be this week!!
I've emailed for a response and nobody even fucking replies. It's an actual farce. I am applying to so many jobs tonight it's not even funny. Just goes to show how little of a shit this company gives about me.
|
That sucks man, hope something better turns up or they get their heads out of their collective butts

So I contacted old manager and asked wtf was going on. Turns out I was the only internal applicant. So, instead of saving money and interviewing me and actually fostering growth with employees they "value" (was the highest rated employee ffs) they just said it's "company policy" to advertise externally if there's just one applicant. Nobody even informed me of any of this situation and they certainly still haven't told me an interview date.
I feel like this thing that was a "perfect fit" (their words) for me, especially with the fact I've repeatedly stated that my hands and arms won't last long typing anymore, is actually just a sham.
I'm more than annoyed.
|
I wonder if that's a law thing? I vaguely recall our labours laws requiring external advertising even if they have an internal candidate in mind. Could be mistaken. Sucks to be in that position anyway.
|
That's pretty standard in the States from what I've experienced. Never looked into if that wasn't just a typical company policy and was some law externally.
|
United Kingdom30774 Posts
Not here I don't think. It's entirely up to the company. Thing is, I wouldn't particularly care that much if my arms weren't bad, if they told me they were gonna advertise externally AT ANY POINT. It was purely internal and my interview was supposed to be last Wednesday. The interviewer was ill and it went external last Thursday. They didn't inform me, haven't updated me with any of this, haven't rescheduled my interview or done anything. This isn't even an upgrade of a job for me, it's literally sideways, but I need it for my health and also upwards progression. Shit thing is now the thing I was lacking (customer service) for the role people applying will have an abundance of.
|
If it's any consolation I'd guess they just communicated poorly and its been the plan all along. I've interviewed for jobs where I'm the shoe-in but they have to interview at least two other people by policy. They get the interviews done then extend the offer to you immediately. Really sucks your health is so affected by the job though
|
And if it's not the case that the external interviews are a formality... it's nice to know how they really think of you. It's shitty but I'd rather know than not, you know?

It's true. If I don't get it then I'm definitely leaving.

I know there's some mandatory stuff around public companies here for cases similar to this, but not the specifics. You're in a private company though?
Draft stuff. + Show Spoiler +Drafting with EDH playgroup—that stupidly lucky braggard? I notice that he first picked a common and there's no colour missing in the pack, so it's really weird. Turns out he P1P1s Fathom Fleet Cutthroat thinking he's cutting black, as if "at least if it's cut then I'll get all of it pack 2." That's the kind of stupid reasoning for his first pick that still keeps him successful through dumb luck of the draw. >_>
He ends up BR forcing hard since he's the 3rd B seat in a row. He still passes me Kitesail Freebooter P1P3, so much for "cutting" B, and he also lets Dire Fleet Captain through (BR unco) thinking it'll wheel (it obviously doesn't, even Slash of Talon doesn't). I'm taking superior cards (like Freebooter and Emissary of Sunrise) over Slash of Talons, and B doesn't look as open as I'd hoped (obviously since I'm seat #4), while U and R are both clearly being cut (I put luck guy on UR), but I really don't want to play GW (even less than BW) and I see none of the strong cards aside from a late Drover (no Whiptails, Pterodon Knights, etc.). The Call to the Feast I opened wheels, but the one I saw pick 3 or so didn't. I'm figuring I can be GW using Drover or New Horizons to splash for R (P1P1 Lightning Strike) or B. I passed Drowned Catacombs too, and took Grim Captain's Call on the wheel since it was just a late pick anyway.
P2P1 is a choice between Vraska's Contempt and Ixalan's Binding, the pack also has Firecannon Blast and Walk the Plank though, absurdly good pack. I figure with G seemingly more open I can also go BG good stuff and splash the W so I pick Contempt despite the harder casting cost. P2P2 is Settle the Wreckage and I start wondering if I should be BW in the end since I wheeled one of the Calls, although I have no removal and no vampires so it's super late. Double-pips is harsh and I can't afford to go straight 3c. P2P3 is Hostage Taker. What. Fuck. This isn't HOU, 5c good stuff isn't a thing here, let alone the brain dead best thing. I decide to move into BW splashing for it, but I'm at like 12 playables so far in that pair so I really need to scrounge whatever I can put my hands on, and any splash-worthy U cards.
In the end I'm kinda rewarded as B is flowing (I passed a Bishop of the Bloodstained early in the pack sadly, but got a 2nd Call to the Feast, which makes it 3 opened; picked Skymarch Bloodletter over Ruin Raider as my curve was top-heavy and I valued evasion over a raid trigger I wasn't sure I'd get to use early; Contract Killing and passed another because of curve considerations again), while G and W, my initial colours, don't have much for me. Seriously, fuck this format straight in the ass, had I not switched colours there that would have been yet another draft where pack 2 yields nothing 'cause everything I cut pack 1 is cut back, that's literally the majority of the drafts so far. I'm feeding R like heck to my neighbour tho.
Pack 3 I open a red-rich pack, sigh, pick a Deacon as the only B common in the pack and pass. I have a mix of packs with nothing and packs filled with "mediocre" cards that are very fine playables for me (such as Skyblades when I have 2 Deacons and a few 2-drops). Pick 5 is Compass over Skyblade, Skuldugery or another very good card for me (3x removal but it's all 4+ CMC so far, Skuldugery is aweome). My deck doesn't look very aggro, I'm splashing, and I've seen what it does when I lost to it. Then of course I wheel nothing, and end up with 23 cards after cutting March of the Drowned. My sideboard's Duress, pseudo-Altar's Reap, March and Ritual of Rejuvenation, I came damn close to not having enough playables.
If I'm seat 1, then seats 1, then 4-5-6 were in white, and 7-8-8-1 were in black. Weird. Only seats 7 and 2 in blue, which I guess makes sense since I saw so little blue until late pack 3... but then you look at seat 7's deck and you get a case of "colour wasn't opened much so it was both eay for him to cut, and bountiful since he got everything afterwards." 3x Cutlass, 2x One with the Winds (he passed a 3rd one late pack 2), Favourable Winds, Banner, Stormtamer, Aerialist, multiple Lookouts, and a couple bounce spells. Hands down the best deck at the table, mostly U (hence all the B players I guess, he picked up a couple thing but since he was so heavily U he let a bunch of B through).
Match 1 vs Naya dinos I'm stuck on 2 lands and destroyed game 1, he says he's lucky to have found his white mana but only played the lifegain/tutor rare. Then game 2 I have a very slow start but after handling his first couple creatures he keeps passing with 3+ cards in hand. I end up winning and turns out he's tricolour with New Horizong to support his stuff. Game 3 is close, Otepec Huntmaster into t3 hasty Thrash of Raptors and t5 Nest Robber for R puts me at 11. I keep trading with him, throwing Deacons under Thrashes or that 1/1 rare + aura, until Grim Captain's Call get me some value and I managed to flip the Compass. From there it's very hard for him to punch through, and he suffered from not chaining dinos so he couldn't activate the Thrashes or Pterodon Knight. We go to time and I win turn 3 thanks to Deacon and Hammerskull. Deck feels super bad because it's so slow and I'm like "what is interaction?" and my small drops are Vicious Conquistador and stuff Skymarcher and stuff.
Match 2 vs BR Lucky guy. He keeps on the play with Ruin Raider has his first play, so I just attack with Vicious Conquistador, he blocks and I just trade using Skymarcher. Guess they aren't bad after all. He looks confused "Wait, it's a vampire?" Then he plays Brazen Buccaneers revealing Vraska's Contempt. I play Deacon turn 5, go to combat putting the trigger on Skymarcher and he goes "oh right it's a vampire too..." again, and exiles the flyer. Read the cards, yo. I then make a mistake as I've got Deacon + Sleek Schooner to his 2 3/3s, and Settle the Wreckage in hand. Rather than play a Hammerskull, I hold up Settle but he plays Sun-Crowned Hunters and only attacks with one creature to get rid of the vehicle. At that point I'll take a fuckton of damage if I play the Hammerskull to develop my board (since his 5/4 would require double blocking and I'd take 6 and not have a board anymore), but he's unlikely to just swing with everything if I hold it. I spend one more turn holding and take 5 damage, then feel forced to run the Hammerskull. When I play Settle, I'd 4-for-1 him and finally turn the game around but he's got Unfriendly Fire in hand anyway so he just wanted to see if I could gain life at instant speed (he doesn't play around Settle but plays around Rite of Rejuvenation which he saw me cut wtf). Game 2 is close but he trades 2-for-2 with his Ruin Raider + Mark of the Vampire (for Aerialist + Bloodletter) so my later Grim Captain's Call for 3 creatures pretty much makes him scoop because I've been punching him in the air with a Call to the Feast to hold the ground and Bishop of the Bloodstained for burst. Game 3 he goes aggro again and my call is to survive until I can flip Compass. He gets his Contempt and Walk the Plank early again and I take a bunch of damage, especially when he later topdecks Regisaur Alpha. I want to hold Hostage Taker until I can steal + cast Regisaur while holding Spires of Orazca up, but that's too much mana... so I kill it with Contract Killing, use the treasure to cast Hostage Taker and steal his own Bloodletter while keeping Spires up, let out a sigh of relief as he doesn't topdeck removal and take 3 to the face anyway, then untap, cast the Bloodletter and Bishop, having finally stabilised against his remaining 3/3s (he knows I'm holding Contempt from an exploration). I end up exiling a Blight Keeper because he plays it when he draws his 8th land and activating it after blocking the next turn would buy him 3 turns and put me dangerously close to burn range. Skies prevail.
Match 3 vs UB nuts flyers Game 1 he's stuck on 2 lands. Game 2 I'm stuck on 2 lands. Game 3 I'm stuck on 3 swamps. Kitesail Freebooter on turn 6 reveals 2x One with the Wind, Banner, Dive Down. I've already lost (t2 Aerialist, t3 Lookout, t4 Castaways, t5 Cutlass so none of my W creatures, Call to the Feast or Hostage Taker could save me). He draws a land and proceeds to cast 2x auras with Dive Down protection. What a "match."
His deck was much stronger than mine and I was lucky people picked too many tricks and removal to really manage a streamlined aggro deck, so my higher cmc and slow stuff like the Compass could shine, but I'm still pissed that I didn't get to at least play a single game in that match and try things out. I'm just very good at getting Hostage Takers opened at my drafts (first time I don't do it myself even) and not finishing 1st. Then again I've went 1-2 a lot this format, just not successful for me.
Lucky guy was calling merfolk weak and a bad deck because it does nothing and folds to even the 1/7 for 3W, with even Boon not working against it and if it's One with the Wind that provides evasion then "it's the aura, not the deck." I'm really weary of him lucksacking his way to 3-0 without getting punished when he does dumb things, but I doubt crashing and burning would shut him up considering the way he argues about things (such as is P1P1 as if he was intending to force Bx because his pack only had a couple B cards—while passing me Emissary of Sunrise).

Smaller games (both model-wise and time-wise) means it might be easier to build a community around, and it's designed around organized play sort of like FNM or things like that, so we'll see how that goes. I've started to look into Infinity as another tabletop game. Seems to be much better balanced and the models are quite cool. There appear to be at least a few stores in the area that have regular groups and events, so maybe it'll scratch my minis game itch for a while. I guess it would be pretty easy to get into MTG around here but I'm not really that interested in CCGs for whatever reason. The mechanics and community seem pretty solid, but I like the hobby side of modeling and pushing my dudes around a board much better.
If what you're looking for is balance, GW is not the place for you.
GW selling models is what's important. Game balance is very much secondary. Most of the time when a new army book or codex comes out that army will be a counter to the second most recent army release.
If you're interested in more balanced and competitive tabletop wargames, historical miniature games tend to be a lot better. There's a Chicago group that last I knew participated in tournaments. Should look into that.

Finally finished FE:Awakening, just blasted through the last 5 levels + Show Spoiler +3 Sorcerers; Avatar, Henry and Tharja each paired up with a speed bitch and with an ass full of Nosferatu just blitzed the last 5 chapters lol. The last boss is so fucking op wtf I just killed him with a lucky vengeance+crit for 72 dmg though LOL. The story overall felt a bit... retarded. I really preferred Radiant Dawn, although there were osme great characters in this one. <3 Henry

The balance in AoS is actually ok though. Only one really S-Tier army and even that has counters, very little in the game that you can't play because it's bad. 40k is just always gonna be kinda shitty though because the power level is so out of wack.
That's why I'm interested in Shadespire. It's designed to compete with X-Wing and those types of "built to be competitive" games, so I'm gonna get it and see how they do with that. Not holding my breath but I have higher hopes than I do for their main lines. And I've also heard that Infinity has really good internal balance. Gonna swing by a game store on Monday to play a demo game and check out the community.
