Man I hope she doesn't hate me after we live together.
you didnt pay first and last month rent when you signed up and it doesnt require a 2 month notice? that is way nicer than the deals i have got.
ive had bad experience with living with women. all i can say is do your share of the work and vocalize early when you think they are not doing theirs. keep the place cleaaaannnn and everyone will be happier.

I actually don't have what one would call a "contract". And by that I mean I just live there and pay things and there's nothing written down anywhere that it's happening.
It's complicated.

For some reason I thought Req. and Otter were already living together.
I guess I just assume that living together comes before the marriage proposal.
PS, does she have a TL account? Have you reserved Otter for her?

Mmm, reading Republican presidential candidates reaction to SCOTUS ruling.
So delicious.
I bet that behind closed doors they're all super happy that they don't have to debate this issue anymore because of how much it dragged them down in polls.

I never really understood why they don't just separate marriage as a religious construct and marriage as a legal construct. That way religious assholes don't have to be so angry?

The two have been tangled together for practically as long as the concepts of government and marriage have coexisted. It's not trivial to separate them at this point.
|
Well couldn't they have started the separation now. Instead of "legalizing marriage" they instead create something like a "civil union" that's exactly the same from a legal standpoint but doesn't have the same history of a religious marriage. Then down the line completely remove marriage from the law and make it all "civil union"?

This is also true.
Christianity has been an integral part of American culture since before the Revolutionary War. Its influence waxes and wanes; there have been four "Great Awakenings" in our history. We're currently on the tail end of the fourth awakening, which was spurred in part by the Cold War and opposition to "godless communists".
As such, despite constitutional separation between church and state, protestant Christianity has been the de facto religion of the country. There are deep ties between it and our culture, our laws, and our politics.
So for many, particularly the religious right, American law/culture/politics is synonymous with Christian law/culture/politics. Changing the laws of marriage is, despite imposing no changes on the religious institution, perceived as an attack on their religious freedom.
Having grown up in that bubble a big factor is privilege. When you're the dominant culture and everyone/everything caters to your tastes and perceptions it's hard not to feel like people are taking from you when that changes, even if realistically speaking you aren't losing anything.
