I'm not old enough for that. Seriously, don't you have to be like 45+ to make that reference? A quick trip to TVTropes suggests that The Aeneid commissioned by Augustus I had a "it was all a dream" element, but it wasn't outright stated.

Bobby Ewing (had to look this up but I knew it wasn't JR) got ran over by a car and it was all a dream. Who shot JR was a different Dallas thing. (Source) Edit: Also apparently 83 million people watched the episode where it was revealed who shot JR. Holy crap. It's the second most watched episode of television behind the M*A*S*H finale. Damn.

I get the appeal of TPP now. Back when I first watched it I didn't realize they were like 8 days into it and still hadn't beat it. Btw, if you're not watching True Detective I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but top notch television ain't one.

Things you need to know about DMing: 1) Don't let anyone play a Kender. neVER EVER 2) Honestly really tune down your combat's CR for the first few sessions until you get a feel of what the party can handle. I created a combat at what I thought was an acceptable CR for our party's 2nd session, and killed a player on the first turn. Whoops. 3) Players try to break the system. It's what they/we do. Plan for the fact that all your plans are going to fall apart.

When I first tried to play with this group, one of my friends decided he wanted to just make a farm and gathered animals and shit. My first campaign is going to be very simple and straight forward, because most of these guys have no idea how to play.

It's kinda iffy in 3.5, since as the party gets higher level CRs are kinda wonky, depending on the classes and gear, so you need to start looking at the monster's statlines and if they have magic/special abilities that make them harder/easier.

Adventures of Alice in Wonderland might be the exception, though now I wonder if that's the first popular usage of the trope? The Aeneid, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Pilgrim's Progress, A Christmas Carol, etc. etc. etc., all were/are very popular. A shitton of narratives in the Middle Ages are framed as dreams as well - Chaucer did a bunch as a popular example. Eastern folktales as well - lots of popular Chinese legends/stories/myths involve dream narratives. It's one of the oldest narrative devices out there :<

The same is true for chess at a higher level but it's the basic level in Go. I also find tactics in chess to be a lot more intuitive than tactics in Go. Go is definitely fun. I think he meant that the rules themselves are fairly simple in that there is only really one "piece" and the idea is just to get more territory than your opponent. Of course, how you get to that point is where the complexity comes from. Too bad the thread on TL is old, and no one really posts there anymore.

To be fair, he warned me beforehand. I just didn't think he was serious. On March 05 2014 02:41 Requizen wrote: CR is Challenge Rating. I don't know how Next works with combat, but in 3.5 each monster has a CR to indicate their difficulty. For example, a CR 9 monster should be an acceptable challenge for a party of average level 9 who have moderate preparation and supplies. A party with average level 8 would have a bit more of a challenge with it, etc. It's kinda iffy in 3.5, since as the party gets higher level CRs are kinda wonky, depending on the classes and gear, so you need to start looking at the monster's statlines and if they have magic/special abilities that make them harder/easier. Ah. Well, first adventure will likely just be a standard fetch quest into a kobold or goblin cave/camp or whatever. After that, I'll have a better idea of what the characters and players will be capable of.
