If that's worth it to X person (and I guarantee X person exists) then what blizzard is doing with WCS is good for starcraft, in X persons point of view. While overall I agree with most of your sentiments in this thread, the way you go about stating your case is a lot of "My opinion is correct, the rest of you fuck off," which is pretty poopoo for getting people to take you seriously. Isn’t SC1 more popular that SC2 in Korea even now ? Maybe SC2 may have declined even without the region lock in Korea! I was surprised when Fantasy came back to SC2 instead of SC1.

To have sc2 you gotta have viewers. They are just not there in Korea. Just look at the viewer numbers for GSL. or even Katowice. More people are watching OGamings French coverage than Crank's Korean one

Yeah, I've heard Flash being called a bonjwa. Had never seriously heard Jaedong. Which at least works in concept, there was certainly a period where Flash was ludicrously unbeatable. And he was exceptionally strong the rest of the time, but not uniquely so. I mostly remember them as TaekBang LeeSsang, which itself places him as one of four. And that's to say nothing about getting shoved aside for two Fantasy/Jangbi finals in the last days of KeSPA. Anyway, I can accept Flash being called a bonjwa, but calling Flash AND Jaedong both bonjwas at the same time is a contradiction in terms.

More people are watching OGamings French coverage than Crank's Korean one Tbh they're doing a great job, I've been watching esports for a very long time and no other crew of casters managed to cast in French that well. They made a conscious effort to build a good vocabulary in order to avoid the classic unbearable Frenglish which is the norm when it comes to cast esport in French. On top of that they know the game well.

Look I understand that argument. And it's a nice argument in the short term, or maybe in the long term as long as Korea's scene doesn't outright die. But my main point here is that what it does do is that it tarnishes the pure competitive aspect of Starcraft. Championships in WCS don't mean anywhere near what they used to mean before regionlocking went into effect. Blizzcon spots are handed out equally across WCS and GSL which completely pollutes the competitive aspect of THAT tournament. I honestly don't care that some people value the careers of non-Koreans more because they relate with them more or whatever, that's their shit I don't care. I care that their values have tarnished what I have always loved the most about Starcraft, the idea that it is as pure of a competition as anything can be. I used to care about this foreigner vs Koreans debate, but ever since regionlocking came into being I honestly can't be bothered with it because there is an enormous fucking asterisk next to everything. There are two worlds in SC2 now, the world before and the world after regionlocking. I firmly believe that exceptional players like Serral, Scarlett and others would have risen to the top of the scene without regionlocking, but in the world we live in now I can't appreciate them the way I used to because a massive part of their success doesn't feel earned, it feels given and that is a fucking tragedy. It's bad for the game in the long run. If our game can't be seen as the epitome of what esports competition is, then it will suffer because it doesn't have that much else going for it.As it is now, it's fine because it's still held in very high standard, but the more people that crop up that place country of origin ahead of anything else means that idea will fade further away.
