Ahhhh good to see some GSL news, but disappointing that there's just the bare minimum of info. Still no news on what's happening for the rest of the year (much like WCS).

SC2 will get the HotS treatment at the end of the year. Mike will be gone in April, there will be no one left to fight for starcraft. The old guard is all gone. Just announcing 1 season of GSL is so telling.

It's all very worrying but at least we have this year to look forward to.

Very excited for this GSL! Don't be so negative, guys. "Blizzard"=Activision is undergoing internal changes, this might be the reason for the delayed announcements.
it'll be interesting to see how many live, in-studio-audience dates happen for the upcoming GSL Code S season. Nice to see something is happening though.
is this good or bad or neutral that this information did not come from Blizzard ?

blizzard is not activision
Isn't it Activision-Blizzard?
It is. They fully merged in 2008 when Activision merged with Vivendi. While they are considered independent in terms of development, they are one company (ATVI) in terms of business.

You can spin it how you want, but there has to be a reason WCS and GSL information is taking so long. And it's definitely not a good reason.
Pretty sure they're late with this shit every year
Qualifiers for the first season of GSL usually happen in December. There have usually already been Code S matches by now. How late this was announced and starting probably means we are only getting two seasons.

That would be proportional with changes in WCS (Leipzig kinda cancelled).
The Battle.net SC2 section was not updated with communty stuff for like 2 weeks as well it feels like a lot of ppl actually spend their xmas time off the company rather than working on WCS-GSL news. With WCS Winter announced, they have plenty of time.

This. Why support Amazon, who does not care at all about us, instead of a company that is doing everything we want it to, for the same reasons that we want them to do it? Especially people with featured streams, because I assume most fans don't rely on twitch notifications to see who is streaming - they just check TL.

Afreeca is carrying Brood War and Sc2's korean scene and surely deserves all the possible support. I'm quite convinced non-korean Starcraft 2 could survive without Afreeca, even if the scene would be diminished.

I believe by "Code A," it's referring to the qualifiers. Ever since Code A was removed, the qualifiers are the new "Code A," since they qualify directly into Code S.

Because Afreeca is honestly painful to use, and Twitch just seems to be a better platform. I get so many technical issues with Afreeca

And that's just you in Australia, because of their Korea-located servers, afreeca streams lag significantly for Europeans.

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea except it's not commercially viable for streamers in the West who depend on stream revenue. It might be a nice idea for the guys that just use for supplmentary revenue or for hobbyists though.

They are global and that is why we can now see Afreeca streams on the side bar that aren't Korean. Afreeca has done a ton in the past year to improve their global performance. They almost need to re-reach out to the international scene.
Regarding commercial viability, you can dual stream using iostream with very little performance hit. Therefore you stream on all platforms. So you dont have to turn off twitch to use Afreeca, there are free and very easy options for doing both.
Finally, I have a long history with AfreecaTV and the most important thing to them is feedback. The reps always tell me if global viewers would send in feedback comments it would put pressure on the developers to improve global Afreeca.

Twitch Partners do have an exclusivity agreement, and more people around the globe have (bigger) issues streaming and/or watching Afreeca compared to Twitch. On top of that, people who don't regularly watch Afreeca are not very keen on using Afreeca for many reasons, one of them being its usability + Show Spoiler +
rudimentary things like clicking a link and having a new tab/window open which sites just don't do except for Afreeca, more complex things like site navigation being so poor that even I have to put in a lot of effort to avoid getting lost or find specific things
, another big one is schedule/timezones of people around the world compared to streams on Afreeca. Broadcasters in the west do need to try harder to live off or even slightly supplement themselves from Afreeca streams compared to Twitch, and, even if they try hard to make it work, there are still things that are out of their control.
As much as I like what Afreeca does for StarCraft, and as much as I wish Twitch/Amazon would create and promote events for more esports besides the most popular ones, it is what it is. Unless Afreeca changes a lot this year, I don't see the majority of the StarCraft players and broadcasters and viewerbases moving to Afreeca. Even if Afreeca does do a lot more this year, they would still need to have a lot of players/broadcasters end their Twitch partnerships and start regularly streaming on the platform, which probably wouldn't happen unless Twitch does something bad for the SC2 broadcasters and Afreeca does something like give SC2 broadcasters a decent sponsorship or suddenly starts making really, really inticing deals for broadcasters moving there from other platforms...
I guess to put into just a few words, Twitch has a ton of "global discoverability" (is that a term?) for StarCraft and, well, everything on the site that Afreeca just doesn't have now and isn't likely to have any time soon unless a ton goes poorly for Twitch and a much greater ton goes well for Afreeca. Afreeca still offers quite a lot of risk where Twitch offers a lot of safety.

I am streaming (on the rarest of occasions) via the twitch center/server in Prague. I doubt Afreeca has a server there. But still - good to know they made some changes/upgrades. I would try it if I were into streaming

Looks like Sortof and Cloudy both played several matches, but others like Major and Scarlett didn't even show up. Presumably something is up, but we're kind of in the dark as to exactly what.

Yeah, it feels like something is up but if that's the case I'd expect to hear something from somebody, right? Being in the dark feels bad today. Guess we'll just wait...
There might not be new blood in Korea but these qualifiers show a good amount of returning players who could replace the ones leaving for the military in the 2019; in addiction to the well known FanTaSy, PartinG, Taeja(who didn't play today), MC, DRG, LosirA and Bomber there are Dream and Sniper(!) as well as Symbol and TheStC(despite these latter two probably sign up but didn't show).

With the name given in the bracket in hangul, this SnipeR is seemingly not the Sniper we know. Although I have no idea who it would be given that they took a best of 3 from a pretty solid progamer in Hurricane and another map from Bunny.

I'm super hyped about Dream coming back though.
Legally changing your name to hide your comeback would be a total Sniper move though.

Either Dream/Fantasy is definitely gonna qualify... I sure hope Taeja/DRG/Bomber also qualifies!
Man I'm really sad to see the low turnouts for these qualifiers. Makes me so sad few people even try but it's understandable why.
If you're not a full time playing hard pro it's impossible to beat someone even a low tier pro.
Yet after a few more retirements we'll not have 32 pros at a high level so some people will sneak through who are very bad and it'll be stomps in Code S. Honestly the issue with the KR scene is the pros are honestly too dam good for the average joe to bother trying to qualify.

But if he does make it, that would make for some really legendary Starcraft casting.

Well, Dream's bracket was hard as Solar and FanTaSy, just as TOP's task was not easy having to beat TRUE(I was having Inno pass for granted);on the other hand, TaeJa should have won against Hurricane(probably Bomber would have advanced over Keen, too) but evidently he isn't in good shape at the moment.
TaeJa, Dream, DRG and Bomber miss out. It should be a big disappointment for TaeJa, he definitely has the level but maybe he's sick or something. The other three need more practice I guess.

TaeJa is the one who should have made Code S but I guess he was dealt a bad hand in terms of bracket. Maybe if TaeJa and Dream were switched, both would have advanced. Dream just 2-0'd Hurricane yesterday after all. Can't fault Bomber, he hasn't been back very long, KeeN was the overwhelming favorite.
As for TOP, group H was very weak but he by himself dragged it out to almost 4 hours. I guess that's to be commended? Beyond that, I don't see him at the level for Code S in any matchup.

I didn't know about TOP's obscenely long games; his TvT, at least, is Code S level imho. I don't see TaeJa advancing over Solar and FanTaSy at the moment, while probably Dream would have done it against Hurricane.

I don't see TOP getting anything done against any of the Terrans who qualified for Code S honestly. And I imagine TaeJa vs Fantasy would be close if they played twice. Dream somehow almost made it work and TaeJa has 6 months of extra practice over him.

TOP went 2-2 against Byun on stream and took games off Special, he should be Code S level in TvT.
Dream figured better than TaeJa during these qualifiers and Fantasy beat TY 2-0 yesterday in Olimoleague; moreover, he's solid and he's damn FanTaSy, he deserves a Code S spot.

Code A in its past form no longer exists, the Korean scene doesn't have the same depth it used to. Afreeca considers the qualifiers themselves to be Code A.
