Actually I want maths done about it. If San wins the group, he has 66% chance to play his bad match-up and 33% chance to play his okay match-up. If he finishes second, he has 66% to play the match-up he is the best in the world at, and 33% chance to play his okay match-up. Difference between losing in Ro8 and hitting the Ro4 is 2500 (7500 vs 5000). Difference between Ro16 and Ro8 is 2000 (5000 vs 3000). It's hard to quantify the risk that you take by losing a series, because you are obviously in more risk to lose the group. I wonder how much impact it has whether Nerchio beats MC or not, because you take a greater risk if you're playing the last match vs MC than you do vs Nerchio (based on San's record, not MC & Nerchio's skill).
Can we quantify whether San is making a mistake by attempting to win the group?
Basically he would be betting 2000 to win a total of 4500, so he needs things to work out ~44% of the time for the gamble to be profitable. I have a hard time thinking that's not the case.

Hmm, I like questions like this, but I have a feeling he's just going to play to win and worry about the Ro8 later.
Hmmm not a huge Nerchio fan to be honest but for the swarm! :D San/Nerchio the most likely result aside from the all-Korean victory. Then again Bling could surprise us all again! Not likely though, predicting a 4th place for him.

why is it SO INCREDIBLY MUCH better for him to play Stardust than Welmu? Also I doubt anyone is that confident vs the people in this group that they would intentionally lose a match.

If you are San, you don't give a fuck. Jokes aside: San's PvP is top level and he ha no problem facing koreans, especially if they are notorious cheeky ones like Stardust. Welmu's much more of an incognite, giving that he 1 is known for being able to beat koreans 2 way less replays to study

I thought the pairings for Ro8 were (semi)random, do you know for a fact that group C faces group D? Cause yeah in that case he obv has no incentive.

I'm not 100% sure I just looked at the previous season of WCS EU and Group D was against Group C. Maybe it is random.

Not intending to balance whine, just a thing I've been genuinely wondering: why did blizzard give the mutalisks both a somewhat ridiculous healing ability and a speed bonus? I can understand the latter, but the former has always been kind of superfluous to me..

I assume the healing has more to do with mines than anything. Storms as well, but it makes playing against them a bit more forgiving.

To counter the new speedivacs.
Sure but what does heal have to do with it? Mutalisks are strong enough as they are.

A +0.25 speed and +1 hp/s bonus since HOTS was released. I believe it was to combat the speedvacs.

Not even counter, just lets you combat them, just like collosi lets you combat swarmhosts, nothing else is even capable to fight it.

They don't but, they are decent. Anyways how do you get to mass tempest againt swarm host without collo ? You don't.
Of course you don´t. First you get colossi and then start adding tempest. JD vs Hasu is a great example what happens against mass tempest. There was also a match in PL, maybe Roro or Soulkey where toss did the same.

IIRC the argument was that between mines and constant marine production mutas were out of the action for too long. It was part of the general faster=better philosophy.

Insanely good positioning before the engagement. Basically surrounded whole MC army on creep and there were no FFs.

perfect concave on creep, perfect abducts, perfect targeting
So I did some annoyingly statistic maths, and if you believe the stats from aligulac, San loses equity by trying to finish second. He is giving up 368 euros of equity by risking losing the group, and he only wins 238 euros of equity by facing first placers instead of second placers. I dispute those results based on my belief that San is way worse PvT than aligulac makes him out to be (60% to win vs MMA feels very very high to me), but I still have to give them, especially given how much fucking time I spent to get them.

And this is why I complained when Nerchio took 15 minutes too long with finishing up the last game. He had a huge advantage that game by catching MC with his pants down, but if he can't do that and has to play a game on equal terms, he stands no chance against MC.

Nerchio only came back because MC missed that he was too far in the Open. Awesome execution to get back in the game, but he was still behind for all but about 60s there.

Micro was good, but it's mostly due to upgrades, also if he didn't lose his vipers until ultras were out it would of been way different, Nerchio just didn't had Ultras and Vipers both ready at any point when he fought.

To be fair, his forcefields really didn't do all that much. Sure they cut off some units but if those sentries were stalkers instead that would've been even more one-sided. Not a game decided by FF at all.
Hahaha, those poll results for game 3 recommendations. Much angry, bitter zerg tears to be had, no doubt. Still, you can't deny it was at least more interesting than hour-long swarm host turtlefests. I'd rather see all games end in a fast and furious fashion, rather than seeing one player slowly suffocate for 40 minutes before tapping out.

Firecake would be happy to oblige I think.

I don't honestly know if I prefer to watch swarmhosts or stupid numbers of mutalisks. Granted the worst muta games are better than the worst swarmhost ones by far, but.. god >.< the nightmares

That wasn't even fast and furious. It was three force fields into 14 sentries. A blind man could have seen that punch coming the way MC telegraphed it, everything was so slow.

That third game wasn't your regular just-execute-it soul train though. Seen MC do this build a few times before on Heavy Rain, very malleable build, that uses unlimited sentry energy to decide exactly what to build and when to attack.

Not a single one. Long drawn out death animation from MC in game 1 after Nerchio surprised him with mass muta, Big roach hydra vs Stalker collo battles in game 2, and soul train game 3 :D

Well, to each his own as they say. If I want to play some slow, hour long games I go with some 4X or grand strategy games. RTS to me is all about the action and the momentum, and nothing kills momentum faster than swarm hosts, since they basically force any game into a slow grind. So I'd personally rather watch 10 cannon rushes/10-pools/bunker rushes each than a single swarm host/tempest game. But hey, maybe that's just me.

NP! I recommend game 1 if you like scrappy protoss play and game 2 if you like back and forth momentum swings

Pretty good series with varied games. First was muta war with Nerchio on top from the start, second was fast third stargate vs roach hydra and MC making a great comeback after pretty much throwing the game, third was soultrain 2base.

He was bad at the game in general, not just any one matchup. And I don't just mean things like blocking his expo with a pylon, but his overall tense, nervous demeanor that led to him fumbling his way through matches. What was is that Artosis said about him, that he's the absolute worst SC2 progamer of all time or something like that? That is, until he went full ManZenith mode, but that's another story.

Great second game! What I feel, though, is that Bling has to force San into another big mistake like he made last game because San might not make it on his own.

Except Artosis said that based on the pylon block thingy and a group where he got destroyed in PvP, so PvP was really the factor that led Artosis to say that about him. If you look at what he did overall, it wasn't that bad, he beat Maru and Hyperdub in PvT (I only remember phoenixes were involved vs Hyperdub, but he can't have been that bad). I don't mean to say he was good, but nobody was actually good at that time.

4 years later no sword has been swallowed.

Well, PvP has always been the most wonky of all matchups, especially in those golden years of 4gates all day every day. San just happened to be worse at 4gates than most other protoss players.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Would have been amazing if BlinG just transferred probes to his 3rd and stayed on 2 bases, then waited for +2, thermal lance, and he would have been safely ahead of San.
So hard to make those decisions though, especially when you don't see the entire map.. XD GG San!

If anything he was more known as just a general build order specialist because lots of progamers used to cite him in interviews as helping them with builds

I can't really explain it, but. San plays protoss like a terran.
Best way to explain would be that his style is similar to Korean Terrans when they offrace on their stream. Personally I'm a big fan of his zealot heavy style.

San, comprehensively the better player. But, MC looked off his game, I have to say.
I agree with what the casters said about MC's lack of aggressiveness in these games. It's like his killer instinct just didn't show up
Yeah, one of the reasons I have always liked MC is that he has rarely, if ever, second guessed himself. His hallmark is complete commitment to his gameplan, and a willingness to totally seize the moment if he thinks it presents itself.
But, this was a hesitant performance by MC. I found it a little painful to watch. Kudos to San, though. WP by him.

I think a repeating factor highlighting today's matches is the failure to sacrifice a 3rd/4th base. MC and San capitalizing on the defenders really pressed to greedily defend rushed bases vs timing attacks/all ins.

I just wish there were some super good protoss players who didn't use lame strats. I have to cheer for zerg players most of the time just to feel less dirty.

You play to win. What did you expect, an agreement to NR 15 and then meet in the middle and fight like "gentleman"?
And, yes! MC pulls out an MC-esque win. I so enjoy seeing Zerg stomped hard like that (especially when MC does it).

I guess I don't know what I expected. It just feels dirty to cheer for protoss even though I play it.

I think the point was, make those strats less good and other strats less bad, not that MC did something wrong. This insistence that any criticism of a playstyle or how a race plays is taken as faulting the player is becoming irritating, it's intellectually dishonest and simply untrue.
Your stupid example of "Lulz is not NR 15 guise" perfectly illustrates this exceedingly annoying trend.

I never feel dirty cheering Protoss, even if in my own games I never cheese and only sometimes all-in (usually reactively).

Exactly. I'm not blaming MC, I just want there to be other options for a protoss to win. Sorry if I didn't get that across correctly.

What do you guys expect, 3 hatch no gas vs 4 gate pressure
Its like i play terran and go 3 cc before rax and complain about proxy oracle Its not like MC did some OP or stupid stuff.. he choose to play a pressure build and was lucky (or did he react to scouting nerchio?) how things played out with Nerchios BO
I wonder why Zergs dont simply go 3 hatch speedling more often and overrun the Protoss with Lings if he doesnt have a forge like Leenock does very often.

I think it's fine that an aggressive 4gate should punish 3 hatch no gas super eco build. Now if the same build was viable against pretty much everything Zerg did then yeah, that would be a problem...

God, your tears are d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s.
You strike me as someone who either cannot or does not wish to comprehend what anyone else is saying unless they agree with you. Possibly both. Anyway, if you cannot have a conversation above a fifth grade level, good luck.

Which of course would be a valid point if what I wrote was somehow a point to the game that was just played. It wasn't. It was aimed at the general trend of TL of deriding anything that expresses disappointment with the quality of a game because the only thing that counts is winning.
If MMA still had the Slayers Hive Mind behind him, Snute would now be cuddeling himself and praying that the ESL studio burns down so he doesnt have to play
Gonna be a good and close match i think, hopefully MMA feels better than in his group that was painfull..
San luckboxed the draw very violently, he has a better chance vs Welmu than vs a terran, he has a better chance vs MMA than vs jjakji, and he also has a better chance vs Snute than vs VortiX imo.
I liked how they had Dayshi say like two words before they took the mic again.

So basically an Earth2 outcome with 2 foreigners in the finals? Would be interesting but I doubt it...
I'm confident with EU zergs, I don't think anyone left in tournament can beat San except Welmu. Rest is just yolo
Stardust, jjakji, and MMA could all provide problems. Stardust did manage to beat him the first time they met at ASUS ROG even though San came back to crush him later in the tournament. I don't think there is a zerg strong enough in wcs eu to beat him unless he plays terribly that day
