Why did he keep half his army in the main to let it die? Load into medivacs and boost away, lift buildings and fight with entire army seems like a much better option..

It's not. Your argument is that in a game in which both parties can pressure each other T/P have to pressure Zerg.
That does not say anything about a game in which neither party can pressure. Basic logics.

Innovations was playing great up until that 3 medivac drop at the natural. His army control was amazing and he was reading the game right, getting his upgrades and was even ahead in those. Disappointing end to the game
