Due to circumstances outside of our control, n00b c0n has had to be Postponed until a later date. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and if there was anything we could possibly have done to make this event go ahead next week, you have our assurances that we would have done it. Unfortunately the issues we encountered were outside of our control and have left us with no choice but to reschedule the event.
It is however, still our intention to help bring eSports to Ireland and we will aim to announce an online event in the next few days with similar players that would have been at n00b c0n, with €1000 prize pool, and are working hard to bring an offline event to Ireland in the near future.
Rest assured, all ticket refunds will be processed tomorrow.
Additionally, we would like to thank everyone who are working hard behind the scenes to make this event possible, and would like to confirm that we do still have the support to run this event in the future.

I think this also shows that this is legit. Microsoft is a HUGE company and isn't gonna sponsor any old games con.

Many software/electronic firms sit in Ireland. Cork is probably Blizzard's second biggest site ahead of Paris by now.
Sounds great, was really tempted to visit friends there this autumn anyway. Wonderful job putting this together.

Confirmed
As a competitive player I'd like to ask will you be using the current competitive gametypes for Halo 4 which are also being used at other Halo 4 events around the globe. I know there's quite a few of us are wanting to know this.

Hey GGDemon, Lead Developer of n00b gaming here. In fact, this goes out to all of you who have read (or are currently reading) the thread; it's one of the biggest eSports Gaming Events ever to be hosted in Ireland, and it's going to be a great drive to bring competitive gaming to Ireland, so just take a weekend out and come down, as you're all more than welcome and we'd be happy to have ye

The point people are trying to make is "so just take a weekend out and come down" isn't possible if we don't have specifics without details i cant book time off work or get shifts covered and teams wont be able to send players, i get it you want to have everything confirmed 100% etc but the longer you wait the more difficult it becomes for everyone else.

Hey guys, A friend and I are looking for 3 people to team with for this. If anyone is interested hit me up ign: EnoCS (for LoL of course). Anything you need to know or vice versa we can get that over with in a nice chat!
I think you guys, n00b c0n, should highly consider changing the game line up of Halo 4 to Halo 3. It would get a lot more of us irish players to actually attend this for Halo.. Halo 4 is a dead game, despite it being only a year old and Halo 3 being 6 years old, Halo 3 is a much better competitive game and would definitely get much better numbers and a lot more attention at this event. I'd imagine there would be a few english teams even coming over to this event if it were Halo 3.
Halo 4 was dropped from MLG last year, and has just been dropped from EGL. The people in America currently hosting events for Halo, known as AGL (Arena Gaming League) are also currently considering dropping Halo 4 for Halo 3, which is also expected to make a huge population return in a week as it becomes free to any gold user on Xbox Live to download. A very large number of players have returned to playing Halo 3 and the a very high majority of the competitive players in Ireland have stopped playing Halo 4.

Good to hear man. Thanks, It would definitely get much more players than Halo 4.
Not that it matters but thought I'd mention, AGL, the gaming league in America who currently host Halo, have just confirmed their change to Halo 3 for their next event in less than a month! Just shows how much more popular Halo 3 is over Halo 4, both here and all over the globe.

As this is a PC forum not many of us xbox gamers have an account on here, but I'm sure you'll get a few more replies regarding Halo 3 over Halo 4 either here or on topmid.eu where you posted it.
The event will have well more people for halo 3 that's my vote can't someone do a poll vote or something for it ? And why is it FIFA 13 not 14 just curious...please pick halo 3
10k prize pool for sc2 alone!! Absolutely amazing for the inaugural event!! Massive kuddos to the event organisers, great too finally see something of this caliber coming to Ireland!! +10
Regarding Halo 3 over Halo 4, there's been a few more posts on it both here and on the thread on topmid.eu. Mind me asking what's the current verdict on this? Are you guys going to throw together a poll for it or?
Honestly, neither Halo 3 nor Halo 4 are particularly good competitive games in this day and age, it's kind of a lose-lose situation. The hardcore competitive fanbase prefers Halo 3, but many of them have quit / moved on to other games given that H3 is 6 years old. Halo 4 is a good game in its own right, but lacked many important components to be a success as a competitive game.
Having said all that, I think going with Halo 3 would be the better choice - it is the better competitive game, it could experience revitalized interest due to being free for XBL Gold members shortly, and it will make your tournament more interesting / unique because it's been a while since there was a large-scale Halo 3 tournament. The Halo 3 nostalgia won't sustain the game forever, but there's still enough to keep people interested short-term (like for one or two of these events until the next, hopefully better, Halo is released)
Edit: Also, I think this goes without saying but better safe than sorry: you should be reaching out to European Halo communities to get their input on it. International PC gamers aren't going to be able to provide you with information about your local demographics for a console game tournament. If possible, get some of the top NA Halo players to attend your event, as you won't get as much international viewership for the Halo tournament without the best players there

Would love to hear other people's opinions on the single elimination bracket for Starcraft. Seems very luck based to make it in the tournament because of that. Double elimination would be way better imo.

That's great. Mind me asking what size the monitors will be? Just curious.
Also, presuming that microsoft is providing the xbox's, do we have to bring our own wired controller and halo 3 disk yes?
It's going to discourage a lot of people from coming if round 1 is a sudden death open bracket. the best players could get knocked out in the first round. you should do an online qualifier for 50% of the group spots, then another open bracket at the event
On October 15 2013 00:44 jamesykins wrote: so PC's will only be available for players when they are playing in the tourny? does that mean no PC access for practice?
Seems so, but from what I hear, for NON BYOC events, this is the Norm. Best you could do is maybe bring a laptop for looking at replays or if it's good enough to play on.
you're asking UK folks from the mainland & Northern Ireland to pay £150+ on travel/accomodation for one bo3. no time to adjust to the equipment or settle your nerves. we can't hire or bring our own PCs to warm-up and practice. If that's how this tourna is going to be, I aint buying a ticket
Ppl are getting ahead of themselves, they havent released the full details about the hardware etc. Let's try and inject a little positivity into one of Irelands first big games conventions instead of bringing up issues about comps and brackets that I'm sure are being looked into. Agreed! Stop the worry train. This is huge for Irish eSPORTs. Unfortunately I can't go but I'm telling everyone I know about it.

The thing is it's a month away and there is still so much we are in the dark on, and if we don't voice concerns then we wont see changes made or have get answers either way. I mean surely it makes sense to enable PC access to players for a couple hours before tourny at least just so we can get used to playing on them, make sure our settings are right etc...
Thumbs up for this event. I am considering going and attend to the SC2 tournament. But, as other people mentioned already, I really think it is necessary to allow people bring their own PCs so we can play between matches. Otherwise it might get quite boring if you are defeated early on in the tournament! I have a Latop that can run SC2... it would be awesome if there was just some tables with internet connection... Please consider this

Hey guys,
We appreciate your patience and understand your concerns.
While all of these concerns are being taken into consideration, it is unlikely that we will be able to resolve all of them. I am however, investigating the best alternatives that are physically possible for us to provide.
We know there is alot of expectation here, but we do have constraints.
I will have an answer for what we can accommodate very shortly, with a focus on brackets and players ability to warm up before a match. These are our primary targets.
BYOC, is not possible as we physically do not have the room to cater for it.

Yes, this is what I was referring to previously. Noise cancelling headphones, the industrial grade ones, then in ear for game sounds etc.

Ahh, this is really, really awesome. I live in London and feel like there seems to be next to no LAN's this side of Europe. With such a massive event occurring so close, it gives me hope that the scene will grow! Good luck, I wish I could make it, but I will definitely be watching!
Guys, there is also this hotel here which I have booked into, it is a fair bit cheaper than the imperial by about £30 ish per night including breakfast. It's not far from the venue, about 2-3 k so its probs about a 20 min walk or 5 min taxi drive too.

FYI. This is 4.2km, and not 100% but if it is outside city limits, will cost 10 euro'ish each way in a taxi. Cheers for the update though Genesis. We are looking at getting more hotels involved but seems there is alot on that weekend.

Feed him all day long by giving him fish and chips.

If I have anything to do with it his liver will request to be annexed from his other internal organs.
Sorry for the slowness oh mysterious Noobgaming fellow (whose identity I totally don't know)
As a lapsed SC2 player I'm going mostly for craic, but would like to run a (non-sponsor conflicting) sidestream focusing solely on the Irish players North and South. Would this be acceptable to yourselves?
We would like to welcome the newest edition to the massive support behind n00b c0n and that is ALIENWARE!
The team at Alienware have decided that only the best will do for Ireland's first major eSports event and have decided to kit out the event with all top spec PCs!! :

yea me and my team had a feeling this was dodgy didnt make much sense how much money was involved for there first event and the fact they changed venue so fast too was a bit dodgy lucky i didnt buy any flights for it or anything
Hoping for a reason soon... I'm loosing a fair bit of money over this now... Flights and hotel booking fee. Not to mention the time off work I have booked so i can travel over.
Why on earth would you have it in Cork...So far removed from the capital city, where the majority of the country live...Aka I am butt-hurt because I cannot attend due to this.
Cork is nicer than Dublin IMO, unless you are travelling from somewhere in Ireland you can fly to it just as conveniently as Dublin I would have thought, it's the second city not some backwater.
The reason i was asking so many questions at the start was because i knew this was a hoax, i highly doubt the event was sponsored by any of those big name sponsors and i'm nearly 100% sure that the money this tournament were offering isn't correct and they cannot afford to pay out this huge prize pool. The fact that they are trying to do another tournament in a few weeks time with a much smaller prize pool makes no sense what so ever? whats going to happen to the money that was supposedly going to be given out at this tournament? Also noobcon have completely fucked themselves over now because no-one is ever going to trust this event again and lots of people have wasted alot of money on this event that is now not going to happen..
Even if in a few weeks you post noobcon 2nd tournament i guarntee you are going to get no partisipants because people will not want to take the risk of losing £££ again.. what a shame for the people who have payed out money etc but like i said me and a few friends saw this a mile off which is why our teams wont send us..
Fucked up BIG time, this was supposed to help shape the scene in Ireland for eSports, which would have positive impacts in future events. Now it's just a massive disappointment, and people are out of pocket because of the incompetence of the organizers. Do you think this + the Veralynn fiasco makes Ireland look like a fertile place for eSports? Absolute joke.
Very unfortunate that this didn't go ahead. Also, for those of you who are saying "I knew it was a hoax from the beginning"... way to jump the gun, we know nothing of why it was cancelled, so less speculation please.
I don't mind speculation, I just hate the ones 'I knew from the beginning' when they were posting HOW EXCITED THEY WERE.
The flights, hotels are an issue that I feel people's pain for. In my case I just miss a weekend of wages which is unrecoverable.
I run a big Fbook group of the Northern players and they've been reporting that their ticket refunds have been sorted pretty promptly, so at least that is something.
To paraphrase a wiser man than I, 'Don't attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence.'
I doubt its a hoax if blizzard gave them a license to run the tournament without ensuring they had the sponsorship support. They even advertised this on their facebook page, but they will need a good reason to save some face on this.
I wonder if it had anything to do with HSC clashing with it
We would again like to express our sincerest apologies. This is the last thing that we wanted to do and we are all devastated by the tough but necessary decision we had to make. We are aware that everyone is looking for a specific reason as to why this happened, but as this would lead to shifting of blame, we feel this would only be counter-productive. There have been multiple issues facing us since the beginning, however due to the excellent support and dedication of those behind us, we have, again and again, been able to push through these and fix them. Unfortunately they did not stop occurring and despite the contingency plans we had in place, this went beyond what we would physically have been able to shoulder. In relation to companies that have been involved in this, all have been informed prior to making the decision. All have been very supportive and helpful in light of the situation that arose, and this has been invaluable to us. Companies involved have been very understanding and we do still have support for the future. Our aim will be to continue to work to build eSports in Ireland.

You could be exellent politician. Why you just can't give us reason WHY? Could you bit learn how to communicate?
It's over lads. If you can't give proper accountability to those who can't cancel their flights and hotel bookings, you have no further business to conduct.
LOL what an absolute farce. And no reason given either. There is absolutely no reason not to give the full and proper reason in fact you OWE it to those people. After so many people spent so much money and time.

Why in the feck would you associate that with a country??? In any case, it's not as if that's a scandal on the scale of "damaging Ireland's reputation as a venue for eSports".
Again, I doubt it's a scam given the people I personally know who have received their refunds in pretty good time. People will have lost money via flights etc, but it's not going to go into the pockets of the organisers of the event, so I'm still mystified.
Quite annoyed at the lack of clarification. I have had dealings with noobgaming and they've been straight-up and decent at all times, and do seem genuine folk but by keeping schtum they are completely fucking any further forays into such territory.
Bit off more than they can chew perhaps, or god knows what? By not clearing things up further it'll harm the organisation in the long run and that saddens me.
Here's the e-mail the organizer, Paul Allen, sent to one of his sponsors on why it was cancelled. Incredibly vague, and even though he invites phone calls for clarification, the sponsor alleges that he has called him on 2 different numbers at least 4 times and none of the calls has been answered. Looks like he ran with the money.
Edit: Sponsor also claims that he has not received a refund.

Hey Andrew,
I apologise for the missed calls from you today as it's been a very stressful day due to recent changes that have arisen with n00b c0n event.
I regret to inform you that due to circumstances that are out of our control, I'm afraid we have had to postpone the event until a later date, specifically in relation to complicated issues with the venue itself.
Unfortunately we have exhausted all possible work arounds for the issues, and have been left with no other choice but to reschedule to a later date.
If you would like to discuss this in person or over the phone, feel free to let me know a suitable time.
We will of course drop in a full refund to you as soon as possible.
''Hi, Lads!I am the owner of PC maestro, one of their leader sponsors as you can see on the poster, and unfortunately I cant give a proper answer for the reason, why the event got cancelled, as Paul never told me. I only received a mail from him Friday morning with some bullshit reason, and with the option for a full refund of the money, what I gave for the sponsorship... Since he seems to be disappeared, I was trying to contact him via mobile and email as well, but he does not answer for anything... I think the simple reason, why it got cancelled, is because they couldn't sell enough tickets to cover all the expenses... But still I want my money back, and Im not gonna live it off, until I received a full refund! If anybody is in the same situation, lets help each other to get back our money!!!!!''
this was posted on the facebook page.. so seems like paul allen is indeed a complete fucking money stealing tosser!
What a shame ! I was really looking forward about this tournament as we need this kind of independent LANs (out of DH, IEM, ASUS, etc) and the prize pool was very interesting. I'm very disappointed and I hope everything will get their money back (even though it won't be easy I guess).
This is just so sad. This make others harder to get sponsors coz they who sponsored this event arent gonna give money away so "easily anymore" <- sry i dont know right word.
n00b gaming may want to offer an explanation now before this turns into a public shitstorm. You can't ignore this, it won't go away. We will keep demanding an explanation and the more you hold off the more likely to irreparably damage your reputation and make it impossible to hold any future events. Don't make matters worse for yourself and offer an explanation to those who you have cost a lot of money. An apology is not enough.
Hm, I basically told the someone from the organisation to explain the actual reasons behind the cancellation or their name will be forever mud in this industry, and he basically said no to that. Not sure whether they're covering for an individual's fuckup, or something else entirely.

I'm on Reddit. If this still hasn't got any response by the end of the week I'll make a post about it on /r/StarCraft.
Brb sharpening pitchforks. I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt, but a lot of pissed off people would at least like a non-PR bullshit, vaguely substantive answer as to why this event was cancelled.
Good write up of the situation as it stands. I'd recommend checking this out if you want a summation of the general craic, plus some reasonable suggestions on how to proceed going forward.

Well this whole thing is pretty unfortunate. I feel bad for everyone who was planning to go. It's a shame that, with smaller organizations, you really don't know who you're getting into bed with until you've already been fucked.
Also, I wonder if Paul Allen likes Huey Lewis and the News.
For those of you stuck with travel and accomodation plans and feel like making the trip to Cork anyway I've set up a small Barcraft event for Homestory Cup VIII. Details here.
I'm in no way related with n00bcon or n00bgaming, just a Corkonian trying to salvage the weekend.
Nope, we got all the info we are going to get. I'm still surprised it says postponed though, I am very curious to see who will risk the travel next time.

Apparently anyone who paid for this, there has been an email sent to the address you signed up initially with, for an online 1000 euro winner takes all tourney.
Now, I haven't got one myself, or seen it but locals have been saying to me. Any luck the rest of you?
I got a copy to repost, albeit my 'source' redacted out the tourney reg details. Anybody get this, you should have if you paid for a ticket for the cancelled event:
