Widowmines are good if you place them properly. Flash was often just planting them wherever and it would either do very little damage or end up hurting him more than helping. As players get better and better we'll see them place the mines in much better ways to reduce the 'randomness' of mines. Also keep in mind you can target fire with the widowmines, there's a brief time where units are in range while burrowed that you can pick a target. So wait for players to get better before automatically calling a unit bad, we don't know how they will be used in 2-3 months.

This may even delay terran nerfs for two weeks.
But the race is in a really poor spot right now.
Playing against it is all about abusing mutalisks and oracles.
If no other unit combination works some serious rework will be needed.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem with mines. Too much randomness, not good for an esports game.

what about bw scarabs, spider mines and goon pathing? I think randomness is great for the spectator aspect. Adds a ton of suspense.

lol this is what I thought too about mines. That they have the same "oh no what if this hits good" effect scarabs had. Tension adds a ton to games from a viewer perspective and that is what widowmines added to sc2.

You really can't balance SC around Life. That's like balancing basketball around Kyle Irving.

The only time Life's zerglings stopped moving in-game was when they were morphing into banelings :/

It has an activation time. The units passed by so fast that it went through its range and no particular unit triggered it. Mines are really good and really powerful but they are not the end all unit that was made up to be. Some randomness is great but it might need tweaking a bit. There was a crucial point in the last match where Flash retreated behind two mines which then did almost no damage and he lost his whole army. Then in game 2 a single mine took out 21 zerglings. It's a great unit though and encourages the players to spread out. So glad Blizzard brought mines back but needs tweaking imo

The mines bungled cause it seemed like the lings were too quick or something. and then the explosion fizzled. Dunno, might be cool with a scarab fail feature.

That's what I thought happened as well. It would be ridiculous if mines could follow lings without any cost if lings kept running.

So basically people think it's a GOOD thing that widowmines can hit a huge clump of stuff and pretty much do nothing?

Widowmines should be potent, but counterable by baiting them with lings. That's 100% really cool I loved Life's continual use of that kind of micro trick. Widowmines randomly wiping out whole armies, or doing nothing is terrible and gimmicky, an artificial way to create 'tension'
