ASSEMBLY Winter 2013 features a €1600 StarCraft 2 Wings of Liberty tournament which is played on February 22-23 in Helsinki, Finland.
Firstly, there is no ASUS ROG tournament at ASSEMBLY Winter 2013 (read why). However, the LAN event will organize a non-BYOC StarCraft 2 tournament with 16 players and a modest prize pool of €1600. The players will be selected by online qualifiers and by direct invites. The tournament format is traditional groups + single elimination playoffs. The event will be streamed in English, Finnish, German, French and Chinese.
The invites are selected among the players who show their interest in the tournament by sending an application by the end of January.
The qualifier tournaments are held on January 21 and January 23. The top four players of each qualifier will advance to the main tournament. A third qualifier is held if necessary with details announced later.
In addition to the two on-site streams, we are looking for community streams in different languages. PM me if you are interested.

Assembly is a LAN event that is organized two times a year, Assembly Summer in August and Assembly Winter in February. The Summer event is more focused on demoscene (digital arts, see archives) and the Winter event focuses on gaming.
ASUS has been sponsoring Assembly for a long time, but in 2010-2011 as their ROG brand was taking leaps forward they agreed to launch a tournament series in the name of ROG in 2011. The tournament series was organized by Hämälä who already had connections to ASUS because of the long lasting sponsorship between ASUS and Assembly. Now as Hämälä stepped aside, ASUS did too, and we don't have a ROG tournament.
As far as I know, ASUS has always been happy with the ROG tournaments. The viewer counts were rising and the event was developing into a unique thing. I'm sure ASUS would have continued the series, but Hämälä was the reason ROG tournaments happened, and now that he doesn't do it, there is no one at the moment who could step into his shoes.
|
So Asus ROG is still sponsoring Assembly proper, and Assembly is still holding an SC2 tournament, but Asus ROG isn't sponsoring that tournament solely because one man isn't involved? Doesn't make sense.

We have something called Finnkampen in Sweden/Finland, which is basicly the two countries getting together and throw their best athletes at each other and see who comes out alive (somewhat simplified, but that's the gist of it) - if nothing else, Assembly could end up being something like that. I think it'd be very cool.

That could be something... I wonder if any Norwegians might be fluid enough to join as well

With how cheap/easy it is to come from Estonia I'm surprised RelaX is the only one coming. Either way, nice to have a sc2 tournament to watch!
Pretty good racial mix (5-5-6)!

Im more surprised there are zero players coming from Sweden. There are more top players and boat is really cheap from there too.

This is WoL tournament. I think almost everyone by now are training HotS, and it might have something to do with not wanting to come here.

FYI, stream lag might be related to this: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/7923533844#1 + Show Spoiler + Following the release of patch 2.0.4, some players have experienced increased latency when playing StarCraft II. After investigating this issue, we discovered that background downloading is causing issues for some players. We are currently working to address this issue as soon as possible.
Leaving your launcher running until the download has completely finished should resolve the related latency issues you are experiencing and will reduce the time it takes for you to update your client for Heart of the Swarm. The download is around five gigabytes in size, and will continue to pick up data so long as the game launcher is running. You can always check the progress of your download by clicking the "Info" button at the top of the launcher, then selecting "Connection Information" from the drop-down menu. When the download has completed, the launcher will no longer say “Downloading data for an upcoming patch” and will instead say “Game is up to date”.

Satiini a no show? Who did see that coming...
|
Very unfortunate that we got a 2-man group because of Satiini and Namutin. Cancelling is ok but just not showing up leaves little room for adjustments. Understandably the knocked out players feel disappointed as someone else got a lucky free pass.
FYI, the bracket was randomly drawn on the SETT TV stream after the last group match. Seems like PvP will keep us on schedule tomorrow.
Thanks to all the casters who are covering this event. Almost every game got streamed today.
|
Such a pity that so many players cancelled, including the international ones. The prizes are still pretty good for a weekend event particularly for sub-top players, they would've had a good chance. It's also a huge pity that invitees simply failed to turn up, I would be furious if I were the organiser.

On February 23 2013 23:37 ETisME wrote: wish the games would just begin right away, the wait is toooo long I agree. Unfortunately being a live event with several other live events going on we've got a specific time when we can be on the main stage etc. Also, we can't always demand the players be seated and ready for a game "at any moment".
Main stage for the finals is reserved from 1800 (EET) so we've got another ~ 20 min until the finals can start
Welmu vs Naama coming up in 20

TvP finals w000t, to hell with ZvZ!
|
Welmu does not care about them trains. Welmu smash.
|
Massive banks from both players well under max supply
I've been really pleased with y0su's cast though, for me the casting is outperforming the players. Looks like a good even fight in the finals, should be a good series.
|
Welmu playing so good today holy crap
|
Nice play from Welmu other than the misrally on the immortal. Good engagements at his natural, nice storms and feedbacks. Great use of the drop to overwhelm Naama's multitasking.
Naama is realllly on tilt after that rage quit. Can't see him coming back in that state of mind.
I was very very wrong, fantastic ghost control by Naama. Hit every HT with emps then sniped them off
|
Naama played so well last game! So many map problems today lol Game 5 soon
|
Wouldn't be a Naama game if there wasn't a train
|
3-0 to 3-3. C'mon Welmu, you can do it.
|
So entertaining finals . Thanks for the great tournament. Seventh game will be hard to watch. Naama is too ballsy :D.
|
Well, that was a fun game
|
YES! \o/
Welmu once again showing who's the best Finnish player.
Biggest upset: Protosser winning a ZvZ :p
|
THAT WAS FRIGGIN AWESOME! Thanks for watching everyone! Grats to Welmu, Naama, Elfi and Protosser for getting top 4 this weekend :D
|
Thanks for casting, cool games.
|
What an awesome tournament this was. And as for the finals...holy hell, so amazing. Sick comeback from Naama, and an amazing clench by Welmu. Assembly rocked hard this weekend

I have to echo what MoD and Wyrd said. Had a blast being a part of it. Thanks to everyone who made it happen (and watched)!
