I think the range is still a key factor. Zerg can afford to skip early gas relatively safely, whereas before it was possible to kite and evade queens. Spanishiwa introduced queen-heavy openers for zergs a long time ago, but pros found holes in the builds, unsafe windows where hellions could poke without being poked back and just wear out the queen defense without actually trading hits. At 5 range the Queens are doing damage back, which makes a world of difference when you've got great control on both sides.

No Hellions could kite before and still kill drones and force roach or lots of lings. Now cant. +2 is drastic.
Similarly Stalkers can't kite anymore and force units but immortal 2 base all in is still deadly..terran seems to have discovered nothing similar yet.
