Hello everyone! This is the official thread for the TWO online qualifiers for our next LIVE event, IGN Pro League 4! The top two players from each qualifier will earn free travel and hotel stay for the live event. They will also earn a spot in an elimination-style group at the event where even last place earns guaranteed prize money. Please note again that there are only TWO chances for a total of FOUR players to get into the group stages from online qualifiers, and all other players will have to fight their way through an open, on-site bracket. You will want to play your absolute best to secure this amazing prize!
Unfortunately, we are not yet able to announce the date or location of our live event. All we can tell you is that it is coming up soon and these qualifiers were scheduled in a way that ensures that we have time for travel preparations to be made. If for any reason, a player who qualifies in these online qualifiers cannot make the trip to our live event, their registration fee will be refunded and we will use the qualifier results to determine who will fill their spot and receive the prize and tournament qualification instead.
When
Qualifier 1: Saturday, Feb 11 6:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) (That is Saturday morning for North America, Saturday evening for Europe, and early Sunday morning for SEA/South Korea) You can register any time before the event begins, but you must check in some time in the 30 minutes leading up to the event or you will not be placed into the bracket. The Format!
Players will need to be online and checked in within 30 minutes of the event's start time. Please be aware that these qualifiers can and will take a lot of time. Forfeits and walkovers will be used if needed. Each round is best of 3, with start maps labeled on the bracket.
Servers: All games will be played by default on the North American server. We ask that players remain on North America in order to ease the facilitation of the tournament, and only switch servers if both players agree to it and it is deemed necessary to play without severe lag.
Spectators Rule: No observers/spectators are allowed for these games. Playhem or IGN Pro League admins may make games for players to help things run smoother.
Map Pool We are pleased to add three NEW maps to our tournament pool from our Mapmaking Contest! Terminus SE Darkness Falls Sanshorn Mist AE Atlantis Spaceship Shakuras Plateau Calm Before the Storm Shattered Temple Antiga Shipyard (Cross Only) Daybreak Tal’Darim Altar
*All of our maps can be found easily by searching "IPLMap" when creating a game on NA (uploaded by VTMirhi), Europe, and Korea. Please use the IPLMap versions for every game to ensure consistency.
Note 1: There will be no age restrictions at all for IPL 4. Note 2: Residents of the state of Vermont may not participate in the online qualifiers due to state law. Players from Vermont will only be able to qualify at the on-site, open event.
Stay up to date with IPL 4 Qualifiers, IPL TV, IPL Fight Club, and IPL Team Arena Challenge by checking our Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch.TV!
Glad the ball is finally rolling, looks great, I'd love more details though!
Also, need to of course complain about the map pool, I like the additions but I really feel if you removed Shakuras, Calm Before the Storm, Terminus SE and Shattered Temple you've have a much better pool . This one really feels too big.

You mean too big as in too many maps, or that the maps themselves are too big? We need a large map pool and we'd like for players to be familiar with all of the maps so that they won't be too surprised in the tournament itself when there may be bo5s or bo7s. We also use this map pool across all of our events, including the bo9 Fight Club and bo9 Team Arena Challenge. =)
terminus is meh. thank goodness theres no dual sight though. oh yeah, and you're gonna hear it from the community if u didnt remove gold bases! In any case, cant wait!
Glad to see some top notch community maps making it in. Hopefully we'll have some more next season to bump out the older blizzard maps that are pretty dated.

Yeah, too big as in 10 maps is too many. IMO with this setup the only play the new maps are really going to get is when they're designated for round 1. I guess if you just want to keep a pool that works for BO9 ditching Shattered would be a start, its really the new Xel'naga Caverns imo .
Also, since I'm sure the question will come up sooner or later, any age restrictions people should worry about?
Thanks for the specific response <3 keep up the good work!
Wooo IPL 4 coming up! However, I don't understand the secrecy behind the date and venue. Since venues have to be booked months in advance, I assume you know it already, so wouldn't it be in your best interest to announce it to give players/spectators ample time to plan accordingly? If spectators want to come from out of town to spectate, the more time they have to plan the better.
However, bad map pool like most tournaments. Terminus, shakuras, calm before the storm and shattered should be completely redundant but sadly they're not :/
On January 25 2012 07:32 careohx wrote: Totally agree Shakuras(Terran), Calm Before the Storm (too boring games, Protoss), Terminus SE(too boring games) are bad maps
This looks completely awesome but I guess I have a bone to pick with your map pool like everyone else lol I keep on hearing bad things about Shakuras, mainly (I have seen this) Zerg's disadvantage on the map and (I haven't seen this) the raw strength of 1/1/1 on it. This is probably something everybody already knows, but the 1/1/1 is still a pretty powerful push despite the recent metagame shift and should still not be taken lightly in your map selections (not the I'm accusing you of taking your map selections lightly).
I second cutting a couple of maps from the pool. My feel of current balance is that zergs are having a hard time, and so you may wanna cut a couple of the most heavily anti-zerg favored maps, especially when you choose to include the protoss-favored 'Calm before the storm' over the zerg-favored 'Belshir Beach Winter'. My suggestion would be to consider not including two of 'Shattered Temple'/'Terminus'/'Shakuras Plateau'. That way we would also get to see the new maps. If the new maps are to be played more broadly, I think it's important to give them a high priority in the tournaments. Make it so that if players hope to qualify, they have to be accustomed with the new maps. Other than that it's great to see the next tournament shaping up. IPL 3 was pretty great.
Its just sometimes totally ridiculous how dumb tournaments are with their map pool. Prime example IEM. They clearly didnt think about it for long. Biggest joke was their Antiga Shipyard which had a huge Steelseries logo on it when the tournament is sponsored by Razer. Also it wasnt cross only. I hope IPL will be smarter.
Please just use the GSL map pool(no gold and cross only). Koreans are extremely sesitive about these things. + add your own new maps and everything will be fine.
Awesome!! I love the community maps, the mappool in general looks great (apart from Terminus), this should be awesome. I'm assuming the top 4 or top 2 from IPL3 will get automatic seeding into IPL4 as well?

Come on now, this is IPL. They are one of the best tournaments in terms of responding to community feedback. Remember the group stages of invited players at IPL 3 that the community felt were meaningless? Shazam! 6k in prizes added for group winners and runner-ups. I think IPL will definitely factor in community feedback in when determining the maps for the main tournament.
I trust that IPL will do what is right. After seeing their extraordinary growth throughout 2011, and the wonders of IPL 3 despite the internet problems, I think IPL 4 is something we all can be excited about.
You should edit your post to mention that the map has to be uploaded by VTMirhi Searching for IPLMap works right now but the trolls will come and ruin that for you.
Damn you blizzard for not giving us namespaces to claim for mapmakers! The whole modding scene is such an afterthought for them.
Will you be releasing information on hotels, possible packages, when announcing the site? Ive never been to an event, and my friends and I have been contemplating on going to tournaments!

Yes we will have information about all that when we release the venue.
Looks like the map pool is geared towards allowing the most Zergs and Protosses to qualify. NP tho, Terrans will rise up regardless of the obstacles placed in our way.

lol... Classic avilo not knowing what he's talking about.
Yay! Hopefully we won't have another irritating accident like IPL 3. I hope we see Inori come back for this one as well~ He was so cool in the previous IPL! (And of course Kiwikaki!!)
"Residents of the state of Vermont may not participate in the online qualifiers due to state law. Players from Vermont will only be able to qualify at the on-site, open event." - What sort of state law would restrict you from an online tournament? On the surface this seems completely ridiculous.
Other than that, great job IPL! Keep up the good work... So far you have had the best tournament hands down.

So it's not in a Casino? IPL4 Six flags!
I heard rumours that it might be in a casino in nevada. In neveda minors can go in casinos as long as they stay within designated paths and dont go into the middle of the actual gambling areas. I went to a casino in reno back when i was a kid with my family, no problems with a 13yo wandering through to get to the resturant or whatever there.
Sickkkk. Love the new map thing, especially since they were community made. Really giving some incentive for mapmakers to keep up the good work, nice gob IPL!

It's usually gambling related laws. Since you have to pay an entry for the "chance" to win a prize. The value of the prize is non-negligible (air fare and accommodations are worth over $1,000).

Lol the qualifiers havent even started..and crybabies make their first statements.. As I always say, if you think that your race doesnt have the chance to win, choose the race(which is OP to you) and play with it. In the end all you care is about winning
Anyways that aside, map pool looks awesome in my opinion, and the addition of new maps always results in interesting and weird games, which the fans love ..
go go IPL..hope the venue is on East Coast, so I can go

No Terran has ever finished in 1st or 2nd place in IPL 1, 2, or 3. I intended to slyly make sure the same happened at IPL 4 but you saw right through my plans! Damn you Avilo!
Considering how awesome IPL3 was (even with the "small" internet problem the whole state had at the start), i really can't wait to see IPL4 and what improvements u guys made to it. GLHFGG

These are only the online qualifiers. There were 2 offline qualifiers (SEA and UK) where Stephano, TAiLS, MarineKing and Moon receives a spot.

What is with the spot, that Stephano grabbed? I mean, he already had an invite as the IPL3 champion. Where that spot goes?

Its actually only the top spot that gets the invite, so Stephano from IPL3, MarineKing from SEA, and TAiLS from UK
The new maps look great! Some nice variety with one turtle map and two map-presence maps with multiple attack routes opening up when you get past 2 bases. Should prove for some very interesting games

TAiLS from UK? Wait what?
There are two offline IPL qualifiers for IPL4, and one of them was held in UK, which Stephano beat TAiLS 4-2 in, but since Stephano already has an invite from his win at IPL3, the invite was given to TAiLS.

Stephano won over Tails during the UK qualifier but the french guy was already qualified since the IPL 3 so Tails takes his place, my guess.

Your terran bias is laughable. How can you possibly say these maps are bad for terran. If someone else was posting that I would think they were trolling. Antiga Shipyard, Shakuras Plateau, Calm Before the Storm, The Shattered Temple are undeniably favored for terran in TvZ, and Terminus, Tal Darim, Daybreak, and San shorn mists are maps most zergs wouldn't choose to play on.

Shakuras TvZ International - 102-129 (44.2%) Korea - 31-24 (56.4%)
Antiga Shipyard TvZ International - 28-39 (41.8%) International 2 (2nd version?) - 47-58 (44.8%) Korea - 15-16 (48.4%)
These two maps look relatively fine to me.
Couldn't find stats on International for CBtS, and Shattered is a Terran map I'll give you that. But some of those maps... like Daybreak are definitely more lenient towards a Zerg player than a Terran.
DayBreak International - 48-53 (47.5%) Korea - TvZ - 57-67 (46%)
I know that you can't tell us the venue, but can you give us an idea of which dates that we should be "holding" for this event? I'd love to go and need to let my job know in advance of the date. Also, do you have an idea when you will be releasing date/venue?
IPL4 seems like its gonna be pretty small unless there are gonna be more qualifiers. There's only 3 people qualified so far (correct me if I'm wrong) and with 4 more that makes a total of 7 players.
So I signed up and payed the 10 dollars, and I'm 17 years old. When i press the "Join Tourney" button I am given the following error, "user_cant_play_on_cash" I have tried submitting a request and no response as of yet. Just curious if anyone here had an answer?

It seems that there is an issue involving Playhem with being able to register with payment for users under 18. We (IPL) are in talks with them to see if there's a solution so that everyone can play. We will announce when something is decided one way or the other.

This is really dissapointing from IPL. Would love to see some professionalism here...cut the map pool in half. Strongly recommended to remove the following maps:
Terminus SE Darkness Falls Sanshorn Mist AE Atlantis Spaceship Calm Before the Storm
Substitute one of the map making contest maps for Shakuras.

Shakuras is awful.
Terminus and Calm Before the Storm are more awful imo...but yes totally agree that's why we can have a map making contest map in it's place to try it out.

I agree they are even worse but still Shakuras isn't good.
Ideal map pool for me would be:
Daybreak Taldarim Alter Belshir Beach Winter Dual Sight Antiga Shipyard
I'm not a massive Antiga fan but a lot of people seem to like it.

Sorry, but we're not cutting the three maps that we had created specially for us. We favor variety, and we hope that players will make their own decisions on how much they need to practice the different maps.
Edit: You also suggest having a map making contest, which is where three of those five maps came from.
So you guys want IGN to throw out all the effort they put into their own map making contest and 1000 dollar map test tournament? Why can't foreign map makers and tournaments ever introduce their own maps? It's not like GSL has never picked a bad map.

Apologies, I should have been more clear. I meant you could remove Shakuras in place of one of the map making contest maps (ie. Darkness Falls, Sanshorn Mist AE, Atlantis Spaceship). I'm sure it will be fine, just having a smaller map pool and removing some problem maps is something to think about for next time.

Totally agree with this. There are plenty of ways to practice these maps and I know of at least one daily tournament with these maps in their pool(with the exception of darkness falls). Imagine if noone were ever allowed to deviate from the standard of current maps. We wouldve been left with XNC .

Sing it to 'em Joshy. I'm DYING to see some tournament games on Sanshorn Mists. Been one of the prettiest maps imo for ages.
I have no problem with not watching the same map every game. Do you guys seriously think pros havnt played most of these maps before? They arent new except for 3 of them and thats welcome imho.

hmm..
What makes you and expert and can tell that this many maps will not give the "best possible experience for your audience and your players" ?
We have seen so many good games at MLG and other foreigner tournaments finals compared to GSL maybe because they dont have so much time to prepare for individual matches and it comes down to overall skills, who is to say this cant happen with maps as well.

Thats not really an invite. He is double qualified as IPL3 winner and i44 winner.

Depends on the way you look at it, qualified as IPL3 winner or invited as IPL3 winner.
I'm quite certain they'll invite a few players, if only for the fans, because most western audiences like tournaments with foreigners and Koreans mixed better than with 99% Koreans attending.
The only issue I have is that it is around the same time as the NASL Qualifiers. Will this be a conflict if 1 or 2 games delay the match? I know that the NASL is just 1 match with a BO3 I beleive?

If he is going for College spring break, it's probably too late for that already, as it is in late February/early March for many campuses. For K-12, it's usually around Easter (early April).

I would not mind a reasonable number of invites, no more than a third of the player pool. Having guys like Boxer and Whitera at IPL 3 made the event that much better.
Please take a look at the registration for our first online qualifier this Saturday, and take note of who is missing! Remind your favorite teams and players to sign up if they haven't already! =D
If you notice your favorite teams or players missing, post on their Facebook fan pages or tweet at them to make sure they don't miss this awesome opportunity!

OMG, so many good names... We only miss some TSL guys...
FXO has 8 other players in the qualifiers, but due to the annoying sign up system and the language barriers, its becoming a pain in the neck to make it official
Really struggling to get through the sign up - after the $10 it just keeps asking for payment over and over again. I've submitted the payment like 6 times and still getting nowhere.
I was going to sign up for this but not even going to bother when looking at that list, maybe I'll try in the second one. For two qualifier spots, this is insane.

It's not going to get easier the 2nd time. Go for it man, the foreigner scene needs a hero, someone to challenge the Koreans.

If you really expect the second one to be any easier you are fooling yourself xD.
Really insane amount of competition in this bracket. I love it! If I was at home and could play starcraft I would totally pay the 10 bucks just to have the chance to play against ANY of these awesome people. Pretty good odds to meet someone big if you ask me

If there i an agreement from both players, they will play it on EU or KR. So at least they have that. Sadly can't please everyone =/

Why do that? IPL knows that people want to know the results the day of the tournament. If it's like all their other Playhem tournaments the bracket will be updated for those who are following it.
Very impressive ~200 person signup for the first qualifier. Hope that some real good matches come out of this.

Same question!
It wont be casted live, the replays will be cast by IGN at a later date I believe. (I think last time it was a week or two after)
I don't understand why IGN couldn't find two people to cast this, even if it ended up being a bit chaotic with hoping in and out of games it would still be better than watching a bunch of reps, oh well, opportunity missed

Let's go drg!! I still hate playhem's bracket system. It's so hard to read with it being confined to such a small space and needs so much scrolling. Challonge's bracket system is much cleaner looking and easier to read.

Yeah, I just gave up... I'll wait for the liquipedia wizards to make it readable. Even if you manage to get the text and boxes to fit (needs exactly correct font size), it just refreshes and resets all the scrolling you put into finding anyone's result... Terrible bracket system.

Are there already information about the structure of the main event, i.e. how the players in the group stages are determined? We have 3 players from previous live qualifiers and 4 from the two online qualifiers. How are the remaining 25 spots filled (assuming there will be again a 32 player group stage)?

Open bracket at the live event.
So if you want Koreans they better win this.
But some of these Korean teams could send their players into the live venue.
FXO did that with Inori and Lucky whom just smashed their way pretty high up. No reason to think they won't do it again.

Hm, you sure? 25 is kind of a random number to fill (normally it would be some power of 2).

Hi Lalush. You have missed IPL 4 Qualifier #1 tourney on Playhem. Tournament entry fee - 10.0 $ won't be refunded.

Dunno, on the one hand, I am happy that the Koreans on a foreign team qualified for this huge event. On the other hand, I get the feeling that, even if they had not qualified through this qualifier, they would have participated anyways, while with the other players, I am not so sure, Nevertheless, they are undoubtely very deserving winners and I am looking forward to their performance at the IPL 4.
edit: this is not suppose to disrespect the achievements of the only foreign player who is still in the GSL. Just saying that the GSL is clearly applying double standards here, or they just don't care about the NASL.

Someone may correct me of course but I never got confirmation that it was foreigner only and just simply a player with 'outstanding results in international tournaments' or something along those lines. Winning this tournament could be viewed as an outstanding international win

I guess Puma's nerves just get to him. He has incredible talent, and was one of Flash's practice partners because he played so well in comfortable situations. It's a shame that he has not qualified for the GSL yet, but congrats to him for qualifying for IPL 4.

nice! It would be pretty good if that tourney takes place one week after or before mlg, so that player/clan can minimize their cost travel (2 flight instead of 4 pro player). You IPL and MLG should share the paid travel as well as the route from mlg/ipl to ipl/mlg.
If I think about White-Ra or Stephano with MLG Anaheim & IPL3.

Invites are alright, as long as they are reasonable and there is a balance between qualifications and invites. Invites are important for viewership and racial balance, and it allows progamers a bit more career stability. Congrats to Bomber and Polt for qualifying to IPL4

Invites are alright, as long as they are reasonable and there is a balance between qualifications and invites. Invites are important for viewership and racial balance, and it allows progamers a bit more career stability. Congrats to Bomber and Polt for qualifying to IPL4
Only 3 invites, everyone else gets a spot via qualification or previous IPL championship wins.
Idra, WhiteRa, Stephano, MarineKing, Tails, Puma, Alive, Bomber, Polt + 3 unannounced invites. We'll be able to reveal the format for IPL 4, which is different from IPL 3, hopefully this week.

To everyone saying a Korean Terran will win IPL 4, keep in mind everyone thought the same thing before IPL 3, then in the semi-finals Lucky beat MMA 3-0 and Stephano beat StC 3-1!

Sounds great. Very happy to see Whitera qualified. Hopefully Slayers Boxer can get an invite, just for all that he has done for E-sports.

Yes. We are aching to do this and do our full release, but for factors out of our control, we have to wait hopefully just a little bit longer.
Sounds great, cannot wait for IPL 4. Will there be open work positions at IPL 4? I would love to go but I can't justify the entire trip on my current budget.
The stream is going live now for TLO vs Choya from Online Qualifier #2, as well as a semi-final and finals match, cast by AskJoshy: http://www.ign.com/ipl
