Announcing a brand new King of the Hill style, Winner's Format, weekly showmatch series!
What does that mean exactly? Well, once a week beginning August 2nd at 5 p.m. PDT / 8 p.m. EDT / 2 a.m. CEST, IGN eSports will be inviting the world's top teams (yes, even Korean teams!) to put up five players each. The first players will be chosen in secret so that no counter-picking can occur. The winner of each match will stay on until they are defeated or the opposing team has run out of players. Here's an example of how this could play out:
Team 1 chooses Player A, Team 2 chooses Player Z
Player A < Metalopolis > Player Z Player A < Xel'Naga Caverns > Player Y Player A < Shattered Temple > Player X Player B < Terminus RE > Player X Player C < Tal'Darim Altar > Player X Player D < Dual Sight > Player X Player D < Crevasse > Player W Player E < Shakuras Plateau > Player W
Team 2 wins 5-3 and earns $500!
Team 2 will return next week to face a new challenger! To make things even more interesting, we are including a $100 bounty for each victory that a team earns, for new challengers to try and claim. For example, if Team 2 wins 3 weeks in a row, they will have earned themselves $1,500 total, and have $300 worth of bounty on them. If Team 7 defeats them, they will earn the $500 for winning the week, as well as claim the $300 bounty.
Map List
Xel'Naga Caverns Metalopolis Shakuras Plateau Crevasse Tal Darim Altar Dual Sight Xel'Naga Fortress Terminus Shattered Temple Daybreak Antiga Shipyard
The first map will be on a set rotation, and then it is loser's pick.

Amazing!
this is going to be great! Can't wait to see the korean teams.

Quake 3 wants its name back.

Ooo nice will be interesting to see how reign perform, and who knows EG might reveal they are a powerhouse after the next mlg, will tune in for sure i love team leagues.

Awesome, this is what i was hoping IPL would be from when IGN first announced they were doing something. You guys should make the maps loser picks as well.
|
Sounds awesome, will tune in!
Are you gonna host the games on NA server exclusively?
|

That is indeed what we are doing. :D
|
i love winner league format for team series but why no counter picking?
|
If Idra doesn't take down 3 players or more I don't see EG winning. If only Puma was also playing.
|

Games will default to NA server unless otherwise agreed by teams (i.e., we're not going to have 2 KR teams play on NA together :D).
|
My obvious question Joshy is when (and if?) PuMa gets signed into EG will he be able to participate or is it too late?
Idra+Demus+Puma = beast
|
Very cool to see another team league of sorts emerging, and I have to say the bounty thing has piqued my interest. Looking forward to checking this out, nice as always Joshy!
|
|
Good to see a non-korean league use the winner's league system, should be good if the teams take this seriously enough (unlike certain Korean teams in GSTL ^^)
|
Looks great!
I will say one things that peeves me, why does every team match have to be koth. I really would like to see a proleague format become more common, since it showcases more players and in my opinion produces more interesting matches.

Very cool initiative, looking forward to watching this!
Hopefully Reign demolishes EG, though I guess with the WL format + Idra that might not be too easy.

This'll be fun, do we know which other teams will be participating and in what order?

A western winner's league style team league? I LOVE YOU
|
awesome concept. I like that IPL is putting together all kinds of content beyond simply IPL2. Will definitely tune in.
|
mouz! we want mouz!
nice tournament btw
|
I would really like if in longer BoX series the looser gets something for spending his time to our enjoyment. Totalbiscuit for example hands out every invitee of his tournament 100$ even if he drops out in Ro8.
In this case a good solution might be something like: Winning player gets 30$ for his team, if one teams win they get the rest of the 500$ So 5:4 score for Team 1 they get 500-120=380$. Team 2 gets 120$ for spending several hours and giving a good fight. 5:0 clean sweep will give winning team all 500.
Of course just an example and even if you would introduce something like this it´s to late for your KotH. But I would really like to see something like this in the future.
|
No Puma? I guess the games were already played then like the IPL individual league?
|

nice looks like this will really be a good way to promote foreign teams letting them get more sponsers and the like

Idra is 8-6 kiwi
So close that it's really hard to predict who would win that.
|
This is a super great idea. Love the idea of a "hold the court" type of competition that also makes for great clan wars and show matches. I hope everything won't be prerecorded a month in advance though (like they are in the main IPL event).

To those concerned about the date these will be played:
The games will be played very close to the broadcast date, and we will be live casting from replays in house at IGN.
|
Whats the story on roster changes, will puma be allowed to play once he signs with eg?

Is there any way to apply a team for this KoTH similar to FXO's KoTH ):
|
reIGN? IGN sponsoring those guys or something?
|
There was a separate tournament called the IPL Team League and I clicked it like 20 times thinking it was IGN announcing a team league. Now I'm glad to see an actual team based series from IGN, should be really awesome and I like the format.

Not sure if you're joking, but the association is not true.

Live casts (like Painuser and HD did), or from replays?
Also: dignitas, mouz, liquid and all the korean teams.
|
Reign needs more terran... Also get in Fnatic vs coL! I want a rematch now that Sen can play.

is reIGN IGN's proteam or are the capital letters of IGN in reign just a coincidence.

As to the first part, if teams have roster changes, they can change their roster from week to week so long as they notify us in advance.

If EG wins you have to invite TSL.
Also, I'd love to see some Chinese teams play, like CCM, WE and TyLoo. Maybe even some TeSL teams.
Should be an awesome event!

Very awesome. Seems like an exciting format and with awesome commentators to boot :D

Haven't watched IPL but this sounds awesome, will definitely tune on for this.
Can't wait till Korean teams vs top foreign teams.
|
I don't get why Bel'shir keeps getting used. It's common sense that it's far away from balanced. Sure, there is allways stuff like loosers choice or map veto but this doesn't justify to have crap like crossfire or bel'shir in the map pool.
Besides that it's great that more team competitions are arround and IPL provides awsome anyway!

OP says otherwise...

I like how every single match is for money so there is huge incentive for each team to always send out their best players.

Such a cool idea and premise, really looking forward to watching this! The more IGN content, the better.

Joshy I think you need to fix the Phoenix part of Reign

really really nice =) cant wait to watch reign!

Yes! I fucking love this format! We need more team leagues like this because it adds to the excitement, though I understand it is more difficult to run. Looking forward to it!

How is allowing the teams to agree upon a server not accommodating? It defaults to NA, but if an EU team wants to play on EU it sounds like the two teams will have the choice to decide. Can't really see how that's not accommodating.

They said Koreans will be participating in the original post.
They expanded from NA only to NA/EU in the span of a season, and they've stated they plan to expand further in the future. We may very well see Korean participants in the IPL3 as well.

totally awesome, Starcraft 2's schedule is getting busier and busier every week

Is the team that will face the winner being announced tonight? or later on in the week?
|
Is this going to be cast from replays or live games?

It will be live cast from very recently played replays.
|
Hmm. Both of these teams have a couple big names players, that the other needs to take down, and then they probably win. EG has IdrA and Demuslim, and Reign has Kiwikaki and Slush. Everyone else will just be there to provide cannon fodder, or to try and snipe the big four.
Edit: That said, EGs Cannon Fodder looks much stronger that Reigns. Incontrol and Machine are probably bigger threats than Future and Spades.

I know you guys probably have plenty of good reasons for casting from replays, but I think it'll really take a lot away from the atmosphere. Obviously an in-person competition like the GSTL is not practical with teams scattered all over the world, but I'd really like to see a setup similar to the team competition that was held between the World All-Stars vs. IM a while back. We had video from the foreign team house at the time, interviews with players before and after their games as they came out victorious or dejected from the game room and the atmosphere ended up almost as good as the GSTL despite the teams not being together.
I think that's the type of thing a foreign team league should really try to strive for.

I really like this format and the art direction! Great work furthering esport IPL!
|
"Very impressive for perfect to stay alive past that point."
Are you serious? Like actually serious? It wasn't impressive for perfect, it was just IdrA being overly paranoid and cautious, and Perfect refusing to GG lol.
I know casters say some stuff that doesn't make sense all the time, but that's just talking for the sake of trying to be "unbiased" when its clearly unnecessary.
|
RAAAAGE QUIT from idra!!!!

I'm glad IPL is doing a team event. I'll definitely be watching.

This is awesome! Hopefully this becomes a teamleague!

This Spades vs. Machine game is barely watchable. The worst players in Code A do not produce games close to this bad.
Summary: Machine loses 128712 mutalisks by having them killed by missle turrets while doing other things and having them stop over random parts of Spades' base. Machine has 7 bases and only 2 queens. Spades cannot marine micro to save marines from banelings *at all*. Machine runs random banelings into siege tank lines
hard to tell if they aren't taking it seriously or foreign players that aren't near the top of the foreign scene are just bad or if there's some other factor that made the game hard to play (lag? time? something?)
Basically, I watch a lot of starcraft and do not generally make negative posts, but if this is the game quality of this tournament, it's not going to last.
Oh, also: I'm horrible at SC2 and would probably get mauled by either of these players. But it's like watching Division 3 NCAA Women's basketball.
|
I'm LATE. Can anyone post the quick results so far. How did it get to 2-2? thanks
|
Just a suggestion... I think you need an overlay with the current score of the match and the $$ on the line (to track the bounty each week) so the casters don't have to repeat this info and people just tuning in will know what's going on. Great format otherwise, looking forward to all the matches.
edit: Looks like there's an overlay now but you can't tell which players are currently playing!
|
I love team leagues! This is fun

i like the fact we get commentated clanwars, but please do not reduce them to simple 1v1 :x this is no more than a "king of the hill" i really really would love to see 2v2's ! really !
|
I get annoyed when tournaments use outdated versions of the maps for no reason sorry. Can you update Bel’Shir Beach to the newest version please I don't think this one is balanced. (The newer one has two xel'naga towers and an extra expansion in the corner)
|
i get really exited about this team arena. i think this will bring out story lines that make tournaments interesting. who are the ace players for certain teams? how long can a certain team hold #1 spot? and who will get the $100 bounty for knocking down those strong teams?
i love it! cant wait for next week.
|
Great team league I am loving it so far. Even though EG lost I thought Demuslim was showing some really promising play and I am stoked to see a really strong thinking terran like I think he will be.
