GSL doesn't have problems like this. They may have a small one, but it gets fixed right away. IEM, TSL, etc... all same thing. Also blizzard has plenty of money to make games for the next 20+ years all because of WoW. So the whole losing money on LAN is a piss poor excuse not to have it in the game.
People, they don't need 40GB for the convention centre their are in, unless they are streaming all the stuff from the event, and that would be pretty bad design, and the fail is pretty well deserved then. It is more reasonable to have a static server cluster with descent connection that handles the spectators. This cluster is not on the event. They then sent one instance of each stream from the event to the central cluster, where it gets distributed to individual spectators.
Seriously, if Blizzard doesn't want to offer in-game LAN support, they need to implement some form of LAN for tournaments, this is getting ridiculous now. I'd see one valid option being a hardware dongle that must be present on either a "server" machine, or on each client PC, to unlock the functionality or something similar.
I understand wanting to protect your IP, but this is currently proof of why their current system just isn't going to cut it. You're relying on BNet itself, 3rd party ISPs, and the internal network infrastructure at the event. Far too many potential points of failure and now Wheat and JP are stuck yapping their faces off while all games are paused and the audience is getting impatient.

Dude, I can't drink today or I'm gonna die. I drank all of last night with some friends after I said "Fuck this shit, Im outta here!"
Had to make up for being behind playing the drinking game yesterday so I just got absolutely hammered. My body can't take the MLG drinking game again.....

blizzcon, gsl have had these problems. They make enough money to sustain their expenses. its damn uncapped profits which companies/corps maximize at the expense of society/customers to please their investors. This is the underlying cause for all these issues, no LAN by blizzard and shitty infrastructure for internet in the US.
