Sponsored by NOS Energy, Major League Gaming, Oak Street Textbooks, Student Union and Activities, Minnesota Student Association, and MTech
Teh Pwn Gaming Club at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities is happy to announce they will be holding a Starcraft 2 Tournament. Unlike our previous 2v2 event, this one will focus on more competitive 1v1 play and will have a larger prize pool. Registration is available here, and details are as follows:
Where: The tournament will be in the Science Teaching and Student Services Center on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus. This tournament will be run in two side-by-side rooms equipped with 12 TVs in each room and 2 projectors. One room is designated for in-tournament play only and the other room will be used for serving refreshments and watching live games with commentary.
When: Saturday April 23rd from 11am - 2am on Sunday April 24th. Check-in will begin at 9:30am and the tournament will start at exactly 11:00am. If you are not checked in and completely set-up by 11:00am then you will be dropped from the tournament.
Maps: Xel Naga Caverns Shakuras Plateau Metalopolis ICCUP Sanshorn Mists Scrap Station Terminus RE Crevasse Tal'Darim Altar Crossfire
Tournament Format: Six (6) to eight (8) rounds of “powered” placement matches are guaranteed for all attendants. For those not familiar with debate or similar tournaments, for each placement match individuals with the best records will be paired against one another, as will individuals with the worst records. Besides letting everyone play more games, it eliminates the luck of getting good or bad seeds and determines the best players in the pool the most quickly.
The placement matches will be best of three games. The first map will be announced before each round, and loser picks to determine the second and third maps. Finals and semifinals will be best of five.
After the placement rounds, the top 8 ranked players will be seeded into a single elimination tournament.
Players must bring their own computers and Ethernet cables. If you require more than one power jack please bring your own power strip as no more than one will be available per computer. Speakers will not be allowed, please bring headphones if you would like sound.
Registration: Ninety-Six (96) registration spots available for this tournament. Registration is limited to only Masters, Diamond and Platinum level players.
$10 dollar registration fee for U of M students; $15 for non-U of M students. All fees must be paid through PayPal as part of the registration process. Cash will not be accepted at the door.
Registration will be open from 6:00am on February 23rd and will close at 12:00am on April 9th. Please follow this link to the registration form http://www.tc.umn.edu/~tehpwngc/events.html
Prizes: The prize pool will consist of $500+ dollars worth of prizes. Due to University of Minnesota regulations, prizes cannot be cash. Instead, Amazon gift cards and gaming merchandise will be awarded to the top 8 players. This prize pool may get bigger as we're waiting to hear back from Steelseries, Thermaltake, OCZ, Gigabyte, Razer and other gaming companies
Prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st Place- $250 2nd Place- $150 3rd Place- $50 4th Place - $25 5th Place - $25
Spectators: There will be a spectating area where individuals who are not registered to play, were eliminated, or are not currently playing are able to watch the games live.
Spectating is FREE.
At this point, the games will be commentated by members of the U of M CSL team unless an appropriately qualified volunteer from the community is interested in offering their services.
We currently have two extra large room in STSS reserved. One room will be dedicated to tournament play while the other room will have live games casted on 12 televisions and 2 projector screens! In addition, we will have gaming stations available as well as all of the NOS Energy drink you can handle! Tons and tons of free swag will be given out so come out and join in on the fun!
Parking: Parking is available at the East River Road Garage and meters are also available around the building.
Additional Information: STSS is set to close at 4pm and the door will automatically be locked past this time. To help out with this problem, we will have staff at the doors between 7:00pm-7:30pm and again from 9:00pm-9:30 pm.
Refunds: Refunds will not be given after a registration form has been submitted. Please make sure that you are able to attend the event prior to submitting a registration form. Since we have posted this event two months in advanced, we hope that all registrants will make this event a priority!
The 2v2 tournament we held last semester was a lot of fun and we had a great turn out. We anticipate this tournament will be even better, so sign up soon. Sadly, due to logistical concerns, we had to turn people down last tournament, and we will do so again once the slots are all full. Please feel free to contact Teh Pwn Gaming with any questions or concerns at tehpwngc@umn.edu.
|
God damn, I am so pumped for this! Spectating in the STSS is going to be awesome! That is if I have any time to watch, seeing as how I'll be winning.
BTW - If anyone from the U wants to practice some, PM me!

Hey, good to see this. I had an awesome time at the 2v2 tourney in October.
It's also great to see another small tournament breaking away from Blizzard maps! This is definitely the direction we as a community need to go if we don't want to wait on Blizzard time for new variety every six months.
So, question about the powered placement matches: I like seeing someone trying out a MTG/Swiss style tournament, but I'm confused about the initial powering. Do I, as a Masters player, walk in with an even chance of playing anyone, or will I be matched against another Master first round?

See here.
Specifically, where it says "the first round is either drawn at random or seeded according to some prior order, such as rating or last year's performance," we create the prior order by Platinum/Diamond/Masters placement (and randomized within those groups).

No one extremely huge quite yet but with 32 signed up and 45% in mid-high level masters, this will be a good show either way.

Should be tons of fun just like the 2v2 Tourney was. Definitely going again. xD

Is there a way to get a confirmation email before the 1 week notice? I'm currently waiting for my paypal funds to transfer and didn't want to give up a spot.

haha well we'll keep you entertained until the finals We'll have 8-10 gaming stations available for people to play on or you can also move over your current system into the viewing room and start playing SC2 with others who have been eliminated! We'll have lots and lots of NOS to keep you running all night long.
Update: 42/98 registered with about 3 weeks to go!
|
Awesome. Working feverishly on getting into platinum now. Hopefully will make it in time to register. If not I'll just have to come and spectate.
|
It's awesome that ya'll are working hard to put on a tourney here in Minnesota!!!
I'll try to work my way up to plat in the next week to hopefully play in it! Sounds like fun...

Thanks Brent! Hope you're doing well in California Unfortunately we didn't have enough funds to bring you out this time around since the building is more expensive.
|
So pumped for this. Wish I could play though...I suck.
|
I'm actually back in Oregon now but no worries! I'll try to make it out again sometime! I really enjoyed it that much!
|
Oh my gosh! So excited to have found this! I still have to decided if I'll play or just watch.

|
Are there still spots available for registration? I think I might want to participate in this since I'm only 2 hours from the cities.
|
I just registered, so there appears to be spots available.
|
Awesome, if I can find a friend to crash with up there I will definitely participate!
|
On March 27 2011 08:01 Vansetsu wrote: Are there still spots available for registration? I think I might want to participate in this since I'm only 2 hours from the cities.
You should consider participating if you're only 2 hours away! We currently have about 5 people coming up from Iowa, 4 or so from Nebraska, 1 from Michigan and a few from Ohio. Two hours isn't so bad after that right :p
Right now we have exactly 20 spots left so please register soon!

Hrmmmm -.-; maybe I should join, haven't been to a lan since the old CS MNLAN's
holy fuck I'm old

Nah, last time we had about 6 people over 40 and one of them brought his two sons!
|
That's it, I'm totally doing it. I haven't competed in a lan event since I went to a H1 IGN championship in Indianapolis almost 7 years ago, and I really, really miss competing. Looks like my odds might not be the best though, I dropped out of masters b4 ladder lock and I've been fairly inactive for about 3 weeks, but hell, maybe that will give me better seeding in the end? haha
Anyways, count me in I'll be registering sometime today.
Edit: Done & Done ^^
|
I will be attending as a player, and I will be bringing a buddy that will be coming as a spectator. Lookin forward to this.

11 spots left with two days to go before registration closes!

oh really? That is very interesting, i would love to be able to prep up beforehand as well. :p
|
I am a decent but not very well practiced Diamond player in the area... I will most likely show up to spectate but should I sign up as a player?
I think playing in a tournament setting could have some benefits even if I do not expect to win anything, but I am not sure what those benefits are that I would get from playing instead of spectating.
Any thoughts?
|
I think one of the main things you could look forward to in a tournament setting is prepping yourself for some serious games and then losing to any sort of polished early cheese.

@Fivyrn: You should just register, I'm only platinum but I'm using the tournament to motivate myself to practice! You should do the same
Also, even if you do join the tournament you will probably have time to spectate a couple of games at least.

@Fivyrn You should consider playing because unlike ladder, you'll get direct feedback from the players that you faced and they can give you input on the details of your game. In addition, you are introduced to competitive play and gain more experience under tough conditions.
Plus, you'll be able to spectate the finals after the first 8 rounds that you're guaranteed to play!

Actually, the payment button is right under the registration form. You can pay as a guest and by check if you like too. It's pretty simple. The confirmation email will come after we receive both the registration form and the payment through paypal.
Glad to see another U student! It's about 56% non-U right now :/

Yup, I have your registration form and fee as well! The event is BYOC /headset, powerstrip if you need more than 1 outlet, and a 15ft (minimun) ethernet cable.
Everything that you need to know is on the first page of this post or on the registration form. Please refer to that until you receive more information in the next few weeks!
|
In addition, we have 4 spots left at this moment and will keep the registration form open for all of those who want to sign up for the wait-list.
The paypal button will be removed and if a player drops out, the next person in line will be emailed a link to the paypal account in order to finish their registration.

You're good to go I have your registration form and fee. You should receive your confirmation within the next few hours. We have 2 spots left!
Unfortunately, only players are allowed in the tournament room. What will happen after a round has ended, everyone must exit the room and report their games to a ref sitting outside the doorway. For the sake of being quiet and respectful to the other players, we ask that everyone will wait in the spectating room (and watch the games!) until the next round.
Plus, she'll have plenty to do like cheer you on, play games on the PS3 and xbox consoles or chit chat with all of the other people there rooting on their friends

By the way, we're still looking for some more casters! We've received requests from 8 casters but this may not fill up the entire 15 hours of this tournament.
If you interested in casting, please send a sample to lanedavis.csl@gmail.com!
Thanks

Newbie Wars will be a much more simple layout, consisting of only 32 players in a single elimination Bo3.
Prizes will include t-shirts, cases of NOS Energy drinks, and MLG merchandise!
Please go to www.tc.umn.edu/~tehpwngc/events.html and click on the Newbie War Registration form for additional information, registration and tournament layout!

Tournament Information Pack - Players
1. Tournament Outline
1.1 Swiss Placement Tournament
This is a Swiss-system tournament, are modeled after Chess and Magic: The Gathering tournaments. While this style lacks the early drama of elimination tournaments, it guarantees each competitor at least six matches, and provides an excellent means by which to seed players in the final rounds.
A Swiss tournament begins similarly to a Round Robin tournament: each player is randomly paired against one other player. After the first round, however, players are matched with other players of similar record to identify the best players as quickly as possible.
Each player will play six Swiss placement rounds, and each round is a best of three. The first map will be predetermined by Teh Pwn Gaming officials. After the first game, the loser of the previous game picks the next map.
For additional information, Wikipedia has a thorough article on Swiss-system tournaments. Ours is identical to what they call the “Standard Swiss system.”
1.2 How do you know who to play?
Each player will receive a player ID number. Tables of each player’s bnet ID and player ID number will be available at several locations at the tournament. Matches will be posted in the spectator area before they start. Only player ID numbers will be posted, so players will need to use the tables to determine the bnet ID of their opponents. For each match, a Host and a Joiner will be designated. If a player accidentally plays their match against the wrong opponent, both Host and Joiner will receive a loss for that round, so Joiners please make sure that the person inviting you to the game is the person you are supposed to be playing against.
1.3 What to do Between Rounds
After each round, both players must report the result of your match together to the referee seated at the main desk in spectator room. He or she will update the placement standings so you can be accurately placed in the next round.
Once you’ve reported please feel free to hang out in the spectator room where you’ll be able to see who you’re competing against in the next round of play. The Spectating room plays host to our commentators and sponsors, so you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the round with food, entertainment and door prizes.
In the Spectating Room, you’ll also see whether you are the designated Host or Joiner for the next round. If you are a designated Host, you must create the game lobby on the selected map within five minutes before the rounds starts. If you are a designated Joiner, you must add the Host to your friends list and join his lobby.
Sample Placement Round
10:55am - You’re in the Spectating Room, and you see that you (ID number 5) are matched up against ID number 22. You are listed as a Host. 10:56am - You walk to the Players’ Room and sit down. On your desk is a sheet with a table of all the players’ IDs and gamer tags. You see that ID number 22 is PeanutBiscuit.336. You add PeanutBiscuit.336 to your friends list. 10:58am - Looking at the projector screen, you see that the starting map for the next round is Terminus RE, so you get a lobby open for it, and invite PeanutBiscuit to join. 11:01am - PeanutBiscuit arrives, you exchange the gl hfs, and you’re good to go. 11:07am - That was rough. You got proxy 2-raxxed into the ground. As the loser, you get to choose the map for the next game, so you select Crossfire, making sure to pick the GSL version. You’re still the host, so you invite PeanutBiscuit and start the game. 11:40am - You won a macro slugfest! It’s PeanutBiscuit’s turn to choose the map, and he picks Shakuras Plateau. You host the game, making sure to select the Blizzard version, invite Peanut Biscuit, and away you go. 12:02am - You did it! You won the match! The Commentators can’t get over your awesome drop play. Now, you should head out and report your win to the referee seated outside the Players’ Room. Now you make a choice: You can return to your computer and await the next round (but please keep noise and talk low for the sake of the other players) or you can go to the Spectating Room to get food, watch games, and witness the upcoming announcement of your match-up in the next round, beginning at 12:30.
1.4 Top-Eight Playoff Tournament
At the end of the six Swiss placement rounds, the top eight players are placed into a single-elimination playoff tournament. The rounds of four and eight are best of three, while the finals is a best of five. If time allows, the playoff series may be extended to best of five or best of seven (any such changes would be announced before the start of the round).
Placement and seeding in this tournament is decided by who has the most match wins, then (in the event of a match wins tie) by game losses, then by game wins. In the unlikely event of a tie between players with identical records, a best-of-one runoff matches will be conducted between tied players for playoff spots. Runoff matches will occur during the break between placement matches and the Top-Eight Tournament.
2. Map Pool and Map Selection
The pool of playable maps is as follows:
Xel’Naga Caverns (MLG Version) Shakuras Plateau (Blizzard Version) Metalopolis (MLG Version) ICCUP Sanshorn Mists The Shattered Temple (Blizzard Version) Typhon Peaks (Blizzard Version) Terminus RE (GSL Version) Crevasse (GSL Version) Tal’Darim Altar (GSL Version) Crossfire (GSL Version)
Beyond the first set, the game loser will select the next map.
3. Schedule
Tournament officials may elect to change these timings during the event. If this is the case, a new schedule will be promptly announced and displayed via projector during the rest of the event.
9:00am - Check in begins.
Players may arrive at any time between 9:00am and 11:00am to check in at the front desk, pick up information packets and begin set-up. You are strongly encouraged to arrive before 10:00am, as games will proceed according to schedule without regard to a player’s absence or set-up status:
Game Loss: Failure to create or arrive in the designated game lobby withing five minutes of the start time for the round.
Match Loss: Failure to create or arrive in the designated game lobby within twenty minutes of the start time for the round.
11:00am - Placement Rounds Begin.
Each Placement Round is a best-of-three, and is allotted eighty (80) minutes for completion. There are ninety (90) minutes between the beginning of each round, resulting in a ten minute break between each round. If a round lasts more than 80 minutes, it may be put under referee scrutiny for an additional five minutes and will end in one of the following ways:
1.) One player will win. If that player now has two wins in the match, that player takes the match as normal. If the match is now not over, the match ends in a tie (0.5 points) for both players.
2.) The game does not end during the five minutes scrutiny. If this occurs, the referee will decide whether one player had an overwhelming advantage. If so, that player wins the game and follows the process per (1), above. If the referee feels that either player could reasonably win, the game and match end in a tie (0.5 points).
After you’re done with a round, please remember to report your match result to the Referee seated in the Spectating Room to see the standings and your opponent in the next match. In the event that we fall behind schedule, match-ups and start time will be posted at least five minutes before the beginning of the round.

Having reached the break, you will find yourself in one of three positions in the player pool.
If you are in the top eight, congratulations! Sit back, take a break, and the staff will assist you in setting up for the single elimination playoff.
If you are tied to be in the top eight, then you’ll need to play at least one more game. You’ll be playing against whomever you’re tied with in a best-of-one system to decide the playoff bottom seed. The maps and structure of these runoff games will be decided by Teh Pwn officials.
If you’re not in the top eight, then it’s time to choose whether you want to spectate the playoff tournament. If you choose not to spectate and wish to leave, please pack up your computer before 9:00pm, which is the end of the break.
Regardless of your position, the break is the best moment to take a breather, get some food from the spectators’ room, or leave the building to conduct any business you have. The doors to STSS automatically lock after 4:00pm, but our staff will be checking the doors throughout the break to let people back in.
9:00pm - Top Eight Tournament Begins
If you’ve made it into the top eight, you’ll be seeded into the single-elimination playoffs. The same lateness rules apply to the playoffs, so please be on time.

If anyone else is wondering this same question, you must bring everything required for you to play the game including your tower/laptop, monitor, peripherals, at least a 15ft ethernet cord, and a power strip if you need more than 2 outlets.
Thanks, Teh Pwn Gaming

I (P) was seeded first in the playoff top 8, and finished 3rd
Ssok (P) finished first and Nozick (P) finished 2nd, both of whom I 2-0'd earlier, but Nozick 3-0'd me in the semi's, and ssok 3-0'd him in the finals I believe?
MGredground (T) finished 4th

Definitely the most organized and fun tournament I've been to so far. You guys definitely set the bar high with the amazing spectator set up and professional casters. I hope future tournaments can follow suit and continue to promote e-sports!
Thanks for hosting a great 'LAN'!

Such a great tournament, definitely glad I went. You guys really took a step above the last UofM tournament which was already great. The entire pwn gaming staff had their shit together and the tournament ran really smootly. Looking forward to seeing what you've got planned for the future.
Also, are there more pictures being posted anywhere?

Great tournament guys you really made it a great experience for the players and spectators. Are you going to put all the casted games up on youtube or the stream website?

Yeah, thanks again to the casters, they did a very good job, it was really fun to sit and listen to them.. and the observer didn't miss any big battles or anything that I'm aware of from what I saw so, props to him as well, it was pretty fun

The casted games are currently on www.justin.tv/tehpwngaming under "trial and error" (14hours long) Unfortunately there was music in the background from time to time that was not turned off. I would start on Part 2 or Part 3. There is no music after Part 5 if I remember correctly.

We actually accept all players of any rank! We've been able to train all of our players equally and each member of the team has moved up at least one rank this past season.
We currently run the team by using a system that we created similar to that of the swiss system. We meet online once a week on vent to watch replays, give each other feedback and provide support for all of the players. We also meet every other week for in-person meetings. Players are seeded at the beginning of the season into houses. They move in and out of houses according to wins and losses and the top 3 players of house primus (the top house) play in our CSL games for two weeks until our next in-person meeting.
Please feel free to join our mailing list at tehpwngc@umn.edu and we'll inform you in September about joining the team!
Thanks, Evva
|
As a tournament follow-up, we've put together a replay pack which contains all of the Top Eight Tournament games, the Newbie Tournament games, and plenty of extras from the Swiss rounds.

Big props to Lane and Ewa for putting together an EXTREMELY well-run, organized, and fun tourney. The level of play was exceptional, and I had an absolute blast casting it.
You folks could teach a thing or two to any organization looking to have an SC2 tourney. Awesome.
