Seems like there's a lot of efforts not related to Starcraft. Why not efforts in demonstrating Starcraft skill?

That being said, am I the only one who thinks there's foul play afoot in the NASL voting list? Why is Avilo so far ahead of players that are three times more popular than him?

All joking aside, one game away from participating in the GSL, consistently placing ~14ish at the three MLGs, all the gosucoaching, SOTG and other community stuff, actually having an interesting personality well, there's probably more. Also, taking into consideration how much practice time is sacrificed for all the coaching and whatnot, he probably could've been more successful even. But, correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the invites for the NASL be based on skill and persona rather than raw "accomplishments"? I mean, Genius for example won Blizzcon but has fucked up about everything therafter. Winning one major or semi meaningful tournament doesn't account for much compared to playing on a high level consistently, at least in my book that is. But of course that's just an opinion. Why not efforts in demonstrating Starcraft skill? Convey personality so that people get an idea of what/who is behind a virtual alias? People should realize that in order to grow and become the oh so beloved e-sport monster, Starcraft should and hopefully will become, it needs people that are not only willing to watch it but also willing to pay for it in some shape or form (through passes like the GSL or putting up with ads etc.). To accomplish this, there needs to be somewhat of a widespread interest. Only having good players play good, maybe exciting games won't suffice. You definitely need interesting characters, drama, stories in order to attract a larger audience, especially when it comes to people who are not too much into the game yet or just don't have that high level of identification with playing the game and understanding its mechanics. An application via mail/paper wouldn't achieve anything of that. Oh yeah, all those efforts ARE related to Starcraft because guess what, it's videos of Starcraft players, applying for the biggest Starcraft league outside of Korea for a potential Starcraft audience to watch.

Personality? Probably not. The idea behind this league is to get people who they think are demonstrably good. People without any serious accomplishments are not demonstrably good(for the most part). Genius hasn't really achieved anything since Blizzcon or that one time he got far in GSL and to be honest feels like kind of a jobber in GSL these days but a Code S jobber is still good enough to brutalize some of these dudes, so I think they'd possibly still pick him if he applied, unless they really want to include as many westerners as humanly possible.

What do you think is the idea behind these videos then? Sure NASL strives for the fiecest competition possible with the biggest names in the sport all over it etc. etc. but in the end, this is business. And from there on you just have to think business. To elaborate on that would be a waste since I already summed it up in my previous post so I will give an example: I began watching UFC a couple years ago. At first I had no clue about the fighters. The only thing I had were their names and mabye some accomplishments that were attached. I basically only had interest in the fights which wasn't too much really unless it were really good and exciting fights. Mostly tho I was kinda bored because to me, it could be Mr. X fighting Mr. Y instead..no difference. Now, after all those events, all the history, the fighting itself only makes a part of the excitement and what makes me want to watch the PPVs. It's those cruel 5 round battles that two warriors endured and that I somehow was part of, it's those pre and post fight interviews, it's the drama stirred up and the stories told. It's the robbed guy that gets his rematch, a guy that no one gave a fuck about in the first place but now everyone wants to see him crush the other guy even more decisively. It's the charismatic guys that stand out and make it interesting. Giving a refreshing, honest interview, combined with unorthodox fighting style, making me an instant fan an suddenly wanting to see a person I didn't even hear of prior to that, let alon care. There's all kinds of similarities to Starcraft to be found. And to somewhat end at the beginning: That's how a business grows, flourishes and is successful.
