We have been hinting about a tournament we are about to run and here it is
It's called the Team Dignitas Gamer Search and the point of it is to find a suitable UK or Irish SC2 player to join our ranks, but it's also a way for us to support the UK and Irish SC2 communities.
We are having 2 online qualifiers where the top 4 players will be invited to a final played at Gamerbase in London, all expenses paid.
The winner of this search will receive a contract with Team Dignitas and will become part of our squad. The winner will also receive a brand new Alienware M17x laptop with an Intel i7 2nd Generation processor. But it does not stop there as the winner will also be supplied with kit from Team Dignitas sponsors and will attend all UK LAN events for Starcraft II in 2011. Joining the team will mean world class training partners as team mates, that will help to fast track the development of their skills.
Interesting. How come you picked Irish and UK players? Sponsor or ownership reasons? Sounds cool though. I havn't seen many UK players apart from Demuslim. Interesting to see what talent there is over there
As for map suggestions i would replace LT with shattered temple, Delta Quadrant with Typhon peaks and blistering sands with backwalter gulch. Just as its bo1 for quite a while in the qualifiers the smaller maps are a bit too all inish.
Love the tournament though really hope i can do well!
I think a couple of the maps could use changing to reflect the current ladder pool, since thats how 99% of people would train for this. Couple of suggestions.
Blistering Sands -> Backwater Gulch/Slag pits Lost Temple -> Shattered Temple Shakuras was removed but I think everyone knows how to play that by now anyway.

We are based in the UK and most of our sponsors are as well, plus we really dont need to help the Swedish sc2 community grow for example
If this tournament does really well we might expand to other territories as well of course

LOL, that made me chuckle deL!
Seriously though the UK as a whole does need more players to emerge and this is a great way to start that process
I was going to suggest removing blistering sands, at the least.. it would be like having steppes of war! it's just not the same type of map as a nice, solid, macro map. too short and gimmicky!
I like the initiative. I hope you all get a good player who will be an integral part of the community.
Seems weird that you would outright just offer a contract to the winner. I mean you could say that there is a good chance you will get a contract but what if he is bad/bm and manages to come out on top?
But it does not stop there as the winner will also be supplied with kit from Team Dignitas sponsors
This tournament would be worth it for the hoodie alone. The other stuff is just a bonus. The dignitas hoodie is crazy awesome!!1
Oh I know the hoodie is the most bad ass piece of clothing that is the pinnacle of mankind's clothing manufacturing. Damn it. The one time I wish I was really great at this game and happened to live in UK/Ireland. Damn it.

If you read it again, it says they wont necessarily offer the contract to the winner of the tournament.
If the goal is to recruit the best possible player for Dignitas, I really don't understand the choice to make it BO1 until the quarter finals... imho you HAVE to make it at least BO3 on each round so that a very good candidate don't get discarded because of bad luck. loosing a single game to a random n00b cheeser can happen to the very best...

in any case, this will be interesting to watch!
i agree especially with the map pool having a few all in centric maps.
Heh, took me until 7.06pm tonight (and an unnecessary check-in on IRC) to realise this is next week. Derp.
Seriously though, more talent-showcase stuff like that really needs to be done. Sports the world over have youth/talent programmes and it's a pity no big organisation has ever put effort into poaching the talented players as opposed to the good ones until now; plus, the paid travel/accommodation really shows that Dignitas are serious about this!
Regardless of who wins, I'm super-happy for them already. The UK deserves another good player.

I think it should depend on the amount of participants.
Maybe RO32 it should hit bo3... I'm not sure.
Most days tournaments do BO3 from the semi finals, so.. I think it's fairly respecable.
this is cool and all, but it'd be a lot better if you changed the map pool to bring it into the 20th century. I don't know why you'd run a tournament with the intent of possibly recruiting a player on maps that will more than likely never be seen again in SC2 once they're phased out. i hope you're not looking for zerg players!
cant wait to see who wins this, hopefully someone who wins actually has the time and effort to get better and become a top player rather then soemoene whos good but will not put in the time to get to the next level!!!

Agreed, if i got the contract i wouldn't go to uni to concentrate on this as it would be a dream come true ^__^. Hopefully i can get to the LAN

We are changing the map pool don't worry
And there we go:
Xel’Naga Caverns Scrap Station Shakuras Plateau Metalopolis The Shattered Temple *update* Slag Pits *update* Backwater Gulch *update*
On March 07 2011 06:45 Zaros wrote: bit better , i would personnaly prefer typhon peaks over slag pits but we cant have everything we want i guess.
Yes, please remove Slag Pits, and replace with Typhon Peaks.
Moreover, this is more of a question not a negative, but i've seen people who are currently in a professional team already signed up ? .. And some participants are not english, or irish(at first glance)
If i want to sign up for the Thursday tournament only, what do I do please? I assume wait for the Sunday event to be over and there will be a new sign up, but just checking.

Yes, sign-up for the Thursday Qualifier starts Sunday evening.

- Will there be seedings, if so, how are they going to be calculated? (just on rank /points? )
, I think seedings are a must if you're looking for a players, because two top players meeting at the start is never good
Yes, there will be a seeding conducted by our staff, Apollo and Pureball.
Map pool: - updated Xel’Naga Caverns Scrap Station Shakuras Plateau Metalopolis The Shattered Temple Slag Pits Backwater Gulch
I'm not particularly partial to the map pool list. It seems that it is favored against a zerg player. The close position on metal, slag (closer than steppes of war), and shattered temple is disadvantageous. Also, the terran and protoss can abuse the back rocks on shakuras plateau very easily against a zerg. I really think you should add the GSL maps, like terminus, crevasse, and tal'darim alter if you want to have a fair and even tournament as possible.
^ Trouble is most of the people entering are only going to have the ladder to practice on and if you add those maps people arnt going to be able to practice much.
TLopen, craftcup and go4sc2 all do fine with the best players ending up at the top and they have way more bo1 rounds. Its a tough way to play, but it isnt inaccurate.
ive seen top players go out first round in ccup, the only reason we say bo3 is because we dont want team dignitas ending up with 8 people in a final who all 4 gated 2 rax scv or 6 pooled to the top 4 in each qualifier do we.

To some degree it may be inaccurate, but yeh. This is true..
If you are inconsistent and can't beat a player in a lower league (for example), then you don't deserve to win anyway.

I do agree with this, but then.. this is a tournament. Players do any means necessary to win. Even though you might feel you are the better player. Thats why the BO3 series comes into effect around this time, to drain out these players.
Masters has a wide range of abilities and in PvP for example its very easy to lose to someone worse than you. Ive beaten Dignitas Bischu in a bo1 PvP but i dont think im better than him and the map was metalopolis.
The better player doesn't always win, this is Starcraft 2
Probably during that game you played better than Bischu.
(: Starcraft 2 is more about being consistent to achieve high aims. I would rant on people I have beaten in CraftCup, but it was probably by luck of BO.
But with the amount of rounds present in this tournament, the best players will show.
are people actually suggesting that a player who 6 pools or 4 gates every game is more likely to win in a Bo1 than someone who plays standard??
then do it every game on the ladder!
cheeses are good for mixing it up within a series. i would be extremely surprised if someone who 6 pooled every game managed to win like 6 games straight, the chances are extremely unlikely....

you might not 6 pool 6 games straight to knock out a good player, you could play standard vs people your level and then see ur up against a good player and go dam im just gonna cheese to try win. That could end up with a good player losing to 1 instance of a 6 pool.

I think your blowing this way out of proportion in a delusive view You clearly haven't seen the map pool. - It's part of the game, not the best always wins.

A good player wouldnt lose to a scrub 6 pooling
Especially on a map pool that DOESNT include steppes of war, blistering sands etc.
catch i dont just mean a 6 pool there are more than 6 pool as cheese i just used it as an example and i think its pretty clear that good players can lose to much worse players through cheese.
First of all, we really appreciate all your feedback, let that be clear. Nonetheless we have decided to stick to the new mappool with Backwater Gulch, Slag Pits and Shattered Temple replacing Blistering Sands, Delta Quadrant and Lost Temple. Seeing as those maps are in the Blizzard ladder mappool and thus have to be practised either way, we believe that this is the fairest way to go about it (keeping in mind of course that they are quite balanced).
We will also leave the schedule as it is with Rounds 1-3 being Best of One and Round 4 & 5 (Quarter Final) Best of Three. Remember that each player has two vetos during the map picking process of those last rounds.
A reminder news with all the details (when/how to check-in) and hopefully (fingers crossed) stream details(!) will go live on our page Sunday noon...ish .
Okay, all the information the sign-ups need is available here. Sign-Up closes 18:30 GMT Check-In starts 18:30 GMT Check-In closes 19:00 GMT Brackets go live 19:00 GMT Stream starts 19:00 GMT Tournament starts 19:00 GMT
Will you be streaming anything? It is a really good initiative to localize something like that and have the best of that region battle it out. Go dignitas!

@ The guy just above, there are very few zergs in the UK in general, my own path if I had kept winning would of involved 4x pvp matchups.
I was looking into the bracket zergs were quite heavy stacked into some of the brackets, with alot of ZvZ but alot were good players but less known.
A map like Backwater Gulch is very unlikely to be present in any large tournaments. Same, to some extent, thing is true for Slag Pits. Would recommend removing these to give Zergs a better chance as those Zergs will perform better when Blizzard aren't picking maps.
