Mutalisks not being used?

I recently started following/playing SC2 for the first time since Heart of the Swarm was released, and I have watched a bunch of GSL from 2021. I noticed that mutalisks haven't been used in any games I've watched. The ZvT games where zergs get destroyed its because of all of the bio drops and T gets to pick up and move around without losing any using and pick their engagements - would mutas address this issue mid-game?

Is it just the games I have watched, or are mutas not effective for some reason?

Mutas are still played, they're just not the go to units every single games that they used to be.

People have been going pure ling bane because it makes your actual army much stronger, whichs allows you to get a lot more economy, and eventually go into hydra/lurker.
So you won't die to a frontal push with this strategy, but you will die to multitask from the Terran since it's the best way to play against this style.
On bigger maps where you're less afraid to die mutalisks are more common, but there's less maps like that in the current map pool.

My impression was that Zerg uses creep mobility and ground units to control large areas of the map and then trades from a stronger eco. But I'm not watching a lot of sc2 nowadays.

Muta/ling/bane is great but you can lose the game in a heartbeat if you don't have enough bane. All about momentum. DRG almost always goes mutas in ZvT (recently I saw him use Lurker/Viper more tho)

Yeah, I was reading this thread going "what about that one guy?" but I'm more into BW so I didn't have the name in my head. They show up all the time in his ZvT games lol

Check out DRG vs Innovation if you want to see some masterful Muta play! Or watch Rogue vs Maru from today.

Like others said, there are more options now, so Muta isn't as common. You can go Infestors to help deal with drops for example, or have some Corruptors, or even Vipers to Parabomb the Medivacs. Then there's the whole set of Roach/Hydra/Lurker/Viper type comps, etc. Mutas are still solid though, it's player and map dependent.

Mutalisks are great, but it's an old game now and Terrans have become extremely proficient at defending and fighting against Muta play, especially at the tip top level of play.

It's all cyclical though, once pro's figure out how to crush this new fangled (lol, "new") Roach max style and the Hydra/Lurker thing Mutas will probably make a comeback as almost all playstyles tend to in this game.

For anything below the top level of play though, Mutas are still devastating and are my go to units vs. Terran.
