(I've gotten use to learning hotkeys and I'm not afraid of everything changing when the official version comes out) A friend and I hopped into co-op last night and he got done prematurely so I stayed on and finished the bindings -- I feel like people wouldn't like it if I joined co-op just to set bindings Also note that I haven't added in the missing ones as pointed out by @Sixtus so their may be some conflicts. I'll update it as I run in to issues but it may take some time as I don't have many buddies to co-op with and I have a general aversion to random groups. https://www.dropbox.com/s/5lisfwte0bjcbmj/TheCore RRM .SC2Hotkeys?dl=0
you are awesome! I like it a lot! I had done my rendition, but i like yours a lot more. Plus I had only done Terran. Tried to play as Zerg. Was trying to kill tanks..... no hotkey for ravager bile.... lol. Click click click. Thanks for sharing I appreciate it a lot.

I just bought LOTV and I haven't played any of the other SC titles before. I have played a very minimal amount of DotA (less than 100 games), no other RTSes really. I'm thinking about using this The Core keyboard layout instead of using "grid". How easy are these hotkeys to learn compared to grid? Am I better off using grid until I get the basics down and then switch over or is it easier just to learn The Core first?

You're welcome, I'm glad it helped! I haven't made any major changes at this point. I have however changed both create and add hotkeys to create/steal and add/steal. Regular create and add are unbound or now.

Fortunately I came across TheCore before I bought SC2. I played SC1 using the standard hotkeys and it was difficult to start using TheCore because my fingers (still after all these years) knew most of the hotkeys. I would fully recommend learning the core before you even learn build orders. Use the guide on the first page of the huge spreadsheet to learn the layout. When you're mostly comfortable with all of that or you get to a point where you need to better understand how the game works, start playing vs. very easy AI and work your way up, stop increasing difficulty when you stop having fun. Remember that losing isn't bad, the games you lose are some of the best games to learn from.

Core is a very weird layout at the start but it becomes very intuitive with time. i would say grid is easier to learn iniatally due to not have some of the quirks the core has.
it took me a while to get used to the core after playing standard for about a year but im a lot faster with the core now than i ever was with standard
i would say start with core since youre new to the game

I just started playing LOTV multiplayer after a long break and decided to keep playing Protoss, the race I played in HOTS. I have now been playing for a few days, so I am starting to get faster and faster with the core hotkeys (PRM). I was just thinking about trying out other races and realized that there were different hotkey set-ups for the different races. How important would it be for me to use RRM over sticking with PRM's terran and zerg hotkeys?

I found RRM to be more intuitive and easy to learn all around. I believe there are only minor per race optimizations in the TZP layouts. For instance, zerg has layered control groups and camera setups that are optimized for injects/creep spread.
I primarily play terran but I like to mix it up sometimes. With RRM it's easy to switch, siege/burrow are the same, load and unload, etc. I never off raced for the short time I used the terran layout. So I honestly can't speak to the similarities or otherwise of off racing with a race specific layout.
I honestly think if Jak and the rest of the team only released random layouts from day one, no one would have minded. But I appreciate that they're Team Efficiency. If I could go pro, I would figure out what the differences are and strongly consider using the one built for my race.

So fired up HOTS after 8 months absence and the Hotkeys are wacked! What is up with having the Group keys split up like that? The spreadsheet in the first post doesnt seem to match ingame hotkeys but the spreadsheet keys are what im use to. I play TRM.
Is there anyway i can have the old keys loaded instead?
|
htou, can you be more specific? did you used to have 1.0 and recently downloaded 2.0 and deleted your own 1.0 files?
|
JaKaTaKSc2/ Can you tell me progress about 3.0 ?
|
Oh hey JaKaTaKSc2, i had to dig around for the spreadsheet and can confirm it was 1.0. I got a new PC a couple months ago and just reinstalled HOTS recently so yeah i lost the hotkey setup for 1.0. I downloaded the TRM version from the OP but like i said, its not what im use to. Any chance of getting the 1.0 keys please?

1.0 keys are in the OP, open the folder that says 1.0. (do not dl from github)

Hey Jak! Thanks a billion for all the work you do in the community. Have been a fan for a while, and silently saw the core as something I would eventually learn, when I got back into sc. Now it's actually time for that.
I have a question, and I apologize if it's already been asked, I haven't seen it anywhere. What is the reason behind CTRL-SHIFT for cameras? For me this is actually kind of challenging to press. Yet ALT is to set the cameras, which for me is really easy to press. Shouldn't it be that the easier thing to press goes to the more common action?
Also, do I understand you correctly that your recommendation for right now is to just change Add to Add/steal and leave the rest the same?
Thanks again for all your efforts!

I have no recommendation atm, still considering options and ideas.
Ctrl+Shift when learned will most likely be faster and more comfortable than alt, but getting used to pressing 2 buttons at a time with your thumb in one motion can take some time.

Hi, I haven't posted in this thread before so just want to say thank you for all the hard work developing TheCore, I have been using it for a while and it's great. I have tried a few searches to find answers to this question but without great success and was wondering if you have an existing answer written out and whether it could be added to the OP or if not, why not. Here is the question:
What is the thinking behind the very different layouts for the different races, including random?
If this info is already somewhere obvious, I apologise! Thanks.

hey! i have been using the core since the release of LOTV. i decided to learn a new race (protoss), so why not a new hotkey setup as well. the setup is perfect! i am starting to get some of my efficiency with this layout. here are a few of my ways that improve the setup even more for me that i would like to share with this thread.
using the two keys at the right of shift and ctrl, remap them as alt and control using hardware or software remapping. you now have an easy way to use the alt and control-alt control group shortcuts by just moving the thumb a little bit to the right. here is how to do this:
hardware remapping: requires a specific keyboard or keyboard controller (i use kbt race 2) windows registry: change the scan codes in the windows registry. a good program that does this for you is called sharpkeys but you need to reboot for the changes to work. if you are only remapping the up and down arrows you could leave it like that all the time. autohotkey: this program uses scripts to redirect keyboard input and have any keypress. can be used without rebooting.
also my other personal idea is using a 75% keyboard with the 'F' key top row closer to the number row without any gap, using them as extra reachable hotkeys

Can anyone help me with control groups for TRM/TRS 2.0? I'm looking at the spreadsheets and am confused as hell, are they updated? One says P for main army, another says '. Tried adding a control group to P and nothing happens, only to pull up options ingame and find out it's not even bound to anything (except attack or something).
Am I supposed to bind all production buildings to one key and upgrade buildings (w/nexus, cc, hatch) to another? How I'm supposed to tab through them? Also what is the thumb's home key/resting position (Windows or Fn key?)
Coming from standard (A for attack sucks), where: 1,2 main army 3 main cc, army 4 rax 5 fact 6 starport 7 upgrades 8 third 9 nat 0 all cc, main selected
I just need the respective control groups or the suggested ones for TRM/TRS 2.0, thanks
Also, is the new Alt function going to be implemented in 3.0 or is there no need?

Hey riotjune,
It seems like I had to manually assign some of the cg hot keys when I first started using RRM. The best advice I can offer is; it takes some trial and error because you'll inadvertently unassign 30 hot keys and have to reset it.
I use RRM mostly playing terran. I use J for production; rax, fact, port. 0 (zero) for hall and ups. O (oh) for main army. 9 for utility. L for harass/scout/utility. Occasionally . (dot) for scouting. The rest are almost never used. I think the cgs are mostly the same layout in TRM and there are normally suggestions in the master spreadsheet.
Tabbing through different buildings or units is meant to be assigned to your forward and back side mouse buttons. If you don't have these buttons, the F.A.Q. section in the OP makes a suggestion.
I've removed the two keys between alt and control. My thumb rests over ctrl and shift with my fingers on JIOP. I like medium because the bump on the J key makes my home keys easy to find without looking.
I've replaced ctrl and ctrl/shift with add/steal and create/steal respectively. The old school create and add keys remain unbound and I can't find a reason to fret over it.

youngtrotsky,
It would take a super long time to try and explain it all. Definitely a video I plan on making, but getting 3.0 out is #1 priority for this project atm.

Combed through the spreadsheets and in-game options:
TRM 2.0 Master Spreadsheet (T.Overview) 1.0 Spreadsheet (Same as TRM 2.0) (Outdated?)
Ctrl Groups CG1: J CG1: J Macro1 (Rax/Fact/Port) CG2: P CG2: P Army1 P Key: CC/Ebay CG3: ; CG3: ; Macro2 ; Key: Main Army CG4: - CG4: - Army2 - Key: Widow Mine CG5: [ CG5: [ Army3 [ Key: Tank CG6: H CG6: H Army4 CG7: ' CG7: ' Army5 CG8: M CG8: M Army6 CG9: N CG9: N Army7 N Key: Harass CG10: = CG10: = Army8 = Key: Viking O Key: Rax/Fact/Port L Key: Ghost 0 Key: MM(bio)/ Melee(mech) . Key: Drop
Cameras Cam1: J Cam1: J Main Rally Camera Cam2: P Cam2: P Nat - Sixth Cam3: O Cam3: O Third/Rally Main Cam4: I Cam4: I Fourth/Utility Drop Camera Cam5: ; Cam5: ; Fifth Nat Cam6: L Cam6: L Sixth Third Cam7: K Cam7: K Cam8: 9 9 Key: Fifth - Key: Fourth
Sooooooooo.........1.0 spreadsheet has inconsistencies/outdated, maybe remove from OP, or reserve a section for those still using 1.0 to avoid confusion, link everything (videos) to Master spreadsheet. As for me, guess I'll start off with:
J Key: Macro1 (Rax/Fact/Port) P Key: Army1 ; Key: Macro2 (CCs+Upgrades) [ Key: Army2 - Key: Army3 (rarely use)
Switched [ and - cause [ is easier to reach/less hand movement.
Never used cameras since I've always double tapped the closest CG. Going to learn those later, but it's going to be:
J Key: Main P Key: Nat O Key: Rally
Am I doing this right?

I like medium because the bump on the J key makes my home keys easy to find without looking. Thanks for the reply. I don't have forward and back mouse buttons, still using a standard 2 button + mouse3 wheel from my bw days (which is why it took me so long to try custom keys), and I can't bind mouse3 up/down to cycle subgroups (bummer). I can't find the alternative tab suggestions in the OP FAQ, can anyone list them here? (Edit: Nvm, found a button on my mouse that I've never used and bound that to next subgroup, sweet)
Using Ctrl for the thumb home key is kind of a stretch for me, which is why I thought about using the small config. But I really don't want to give up the bump on the J key. Guess I'll stick to the medium config for a couple weeks and see how it goes. (Edit: Having thumb on the left part of Shift as resting position feels pretty natural, no strain, guess I'll stick with TRM)

layered camera inject no longer works correctly. Queens are going bonkers and wandering all over the map with the new queued injects mechanics. Is there a way to tether queens to their hatchery and inject with them?
