My question is, when do you higher level players actually watch the minimap? Is this something you do every 3rd second or is it something you do while macroing stuff like larva inject, start upgrades or whatever. I kinda need a general idea of when to at least give the mini map a bit more attention than usual. Any help is welcome, though I'd appreciate it more if you're atleast masters or higher.
[Q] When do you look at the minimap?

Map awareness is super important at high level play. The difference between responding to the game 'under attack' warning and a dot in vision to a scout or forward base can be around 10-30 seconds time to react. Seconds win battles in RTS.

Looking at the minimap will tell you if you are being attacked, harassed and how much map control you have. It is one of your most important resources in an RTS

That means you should be looking at the minimap every few seconds, even more so in the midgame when youre macroing.

Just play a bunch more, and it should be going well. Depending on what race you're playing: Build some static defences. I know pro's don't do this very often, but if you defend drops 100% with a 2-3 cannons which otherwhise would have killed your base it's 100% worth it. Don't think you're a pro. Play it savely. I want all my vital indicators as close as possible FFS! This feels so 90's Another thing that drives me crazy: I would love to see is the possibility to move the single icons on the lower right. I play with a completely customized hotkey setup. However it has a Grid layout idea behind it. It would be so nice if I could move the icons into right position, rather than just having the corresponding letter shown over it. these guys want to produce a game for pros...but most likely never checked real PROS applications. hell I make my living with 3D apps like Maya, where everything is just measure made to MY needs...

I just try to have as much vision on the minimap(obs, xel naga towers...) and then I just notice if something happens cuz of my peripheral vision.

I find that stickies on the outscirts of the screen really are helpful. Also I would advise you to get a notebook and just write down everything you want to get better at, pick out one thing and practice it for a couple of days, then ADD(not replace) another thing. Most important: Watch upper right Corner Watch Minimap Tap production buildings(also Nexi CC etc..) BUT you must get used to playing your builds and really know them by heart before you should do this otherwhise you will destract urself too much, screw up everything and get frustrated. GL

You need to know sometimes you just need to keep looking at your minimap. For example let's say you're doing an econ build and know that one dangerous way you can lose is if he drops you at the back and attacks at the natural. This is the kind of time when you need to keep looking at the minimap to see his drop come so you can defend it right away and also not be tricked by his other attack at the front. You can also just use the F keys for your base, and keep scrolling through those to check for things, but overall a minimap is better. Another example is if you're moving out with your 200/200 terran mech army, and you're also taking more bases and setting up gas and transferring workers so you can remake an army if you lose. You need to keep looking at your minimap the instant the zerg comes in so that you can siege in time. Another example is if you're playing vs zerg and you're doing some hellion pressure. You decide he has too much so you sit the hellions back behind his creep. You need to look at the minimap to see if any zerglings are going to come out and try to catch you off guard. You don't even need to double tap/click the control group for your hellions, just select them via control group and micro them without even looking at them (move them towards your base, etc., then look at them).
