Just gonna showcase a trick I've been using to get idle workers back to mining recently.
First, I rebound everything I could away from the Z and X keys. Then, I reassigned Z to "Select idle worker" and rebound X to base camera. Now, when I see that I have idle workers, I simply run my fingers over Ctrl -> Z -> X and click a mineral patch, without having to click the minimap.
Prior to using this technique I was hitting Ctrl F1, clicking the minimap and then a mineral patch, and I find that doing it my way is notably faster and uses less APM.
You could of course rebind "Select idle worker" and "Base camera" to another pair of keys similarly easy to press in conjunction with Ctrl and get the same effect. For example, you could use \ and Z. I only use Z and X because it feels more comfortable for my large hands.

EDIT: this is most useful for terrans
EDIT 2: here is where to find base cam and idle worker hotkey settings
Esc -> hotkeys -> global -> camera -> basecamera
Esc -> hotkeys -> global -> unit management -> idle worker

That's not a bad spamming idea for some players. I feel uncertain about the z/x keys. They can be utilized much better than this style in my opinion, but overall helpful.

Awesome. Will try it out for sure and see how it feels!

You could just use the screen hotkeys. Set F2 to your base, then go Ctrl->F1->F2->click minerals.

changing how I make zerglings/zealots just so I can have my occasional idle worker mine a little faster... not sure how I feel about that =/
It'd be more useful for terrans since they actually have to pull multiple scvs off the line to make stuff. How often to protoss/zergs have idle workers in a game =O
now compare that amount to the amount of times they have to make a zergling or a zealot
basically, not sure if worth it

I'm Z. What's an idle worker?
(:D)

My keyboard has macro keys. Whilst I don't really use them, what I do use them for is having 1 macro key with the bindings (ctrl+F1) attached. I used to have the annoying problems once in a while where I would accidently not keep ctrl held down at the start of the game with my probe split, now i never have that problem, but it also comes in handy later on in the game. One easy accessible button without having to press 2 annoying ones.

FYI Wildsound using macros that convert multiple actions (eg. keypresses) into a single action are not allowed in the SC2 TOS. I dont judge ya though ^^

I can't seem to be able to change hotkeys like that? Where is the option to do this?

(:D) It's that thing that happens if hellions leave any survivors remember?
Answer to the question above me The idle worker hotkey is accessable by going to menu-hotkeys-global-unit management Base Camera is the twelfth option down in Camera (default is backspace)

I'm pretty sure that this is considered cheating under blizzard TOS.

I haven't read the ToS or stuff like that, but what people keep saying is " you are not allowed to do multiple actions with one keypress". I'd argue that Wildsound does not violate that, since the ctrl button is acting as a modifier and not an action button. Consider the opposite: if we rebind, say, the 4 hotkey to ctrl+4, are we suddenly doing two actions in order to select our group 4? Not really, no. Hence, having a macro button automatically use the ctrl modifier I would not consider to be a violation of the "only one action per keypress" rule.

Thanks for the idea! However, I play Protoss and therefore this isn't really necessary, but I'm sure Terrans who don't re rally after building things will appreciate it.

i use f1 and the ~ key. Its really really easy for me and before i thought of this i bound my base key to ~ anyways cause i liked using that to inject my larve instead of backspace
