1700 toss here. So lately I've been having a lot of problems with how strong roach pushes now. Roach/ling often breaks my 3 gate robo expands.
For this game I really have no idea what I could have done. He went hatch first and roach rushed me after droning up some. With 3 gate robo, the push almost killed me, and then got collolus and expanded. He pumped about 25 roaches and tunneled clawed under my army and demolished my army. The thing is, even without tunneling claws, he would have won the battle.
He almost killed me, when my I was going 3 gate robo, the arguably one of the strongest builds against roaches while mantaining a healthy income lead. When I expanded, he could have droned + teched up, and been even going into the mid game. Instead he pumped roaches to make a seemly impossible push to stop. A complete wall on this map could have helped, with an ob to spot, but most maps do not have a wallable natrual. .I had to expand or I would be going all-in, an easy relatively defence for the zerg
Is it the fault of the build? Is 3 gate sentry zealot obsolete because the zerg can make 2 zerglings and drone up until roaches? Please don't respond unless you have a decent amount of experience on the topic, it makes everything confusing.
![[image loading]](http://www.gamereplays.org/community/uploads/repimgs/repimg-33-158452.jpg) EDIT: *Comparing this to early ling pumps, if the zerg does not do substantial damage, the lings lose some of their value as collolus come out. With roaches they can be assimilated into the main army with no bumps, like banshees in PvT. IMO something tells me that there's is a problem (balance) with that, but atm I'm more interested in trying to beat it.

Really think robo before gates (ie 1gate robo into 3gate) is better. Or at least 2gate robo. That early immortal is huge against roaches.
Too much zealot/sentry, especially after the pressure started. You simply had no firepower, with only 4 sentries as ranged damage.
Chase away the friggin ovie :<

I've never seen a Roach attack come after a 15 hatch, but I think, if anything, your replay shows how versatile the 3gate Robo build is. You just didn't execute it very well, unfortunately. I imagine you were pretty flustered at the time, though.
A few key things:
1) Why waste a forcefield on four lings that aren't going to accomplish anything? It didn't make a big difference, since you made so many sentries early on, something we defer on in our builds.
2) You gave that Warp Gate away. If he had vision up top, a single Stalker could have chased that Overlord away. Even so, you had more than enough forces to run down and just kill his forces once that Immortal came out.
3) If there's danger of him coming in, keep the ramp force fielded, though I think you did a great job of pushing him back after the above mentioned blunders.
4) When you expanded your composition was terrible. You completely stopped making Sentries. You absolutely need 2-4 in that composition and you probably could have won outright with that push you attempted. Edit: I shouldn't say terrible, since, although they're necessary, you were only missing Sentries. It's a shame you lost those Immortals, though.
5) Last, and quite possibly most important, you didn't make an observer. Having the observer would have saved you the trouble of pushing when you didn't have the forces for it and you would not have died to those Roaches, despite what you said. You only died because he literally killed your Colossus before they did any damage.
Your macro was good, except around the time where you put your Robo down. It could definitely have been planted earlier, which obviously would have made a difference. Other than that, it was really good so I can see why you're ranked the way you are. You lost this match to some poor decision making, unfortunately. I thought you had the game for sure until you stopped making Sentries and tried to attack.

Thanks, I never considered going for a 1 gate robo into anything other than 1 base collolus. Orginally it was supposed to be a 3 gate expand, but you abosolutely need the robo faster to defend roaches.
I didn't get sentries cause I was gas broke, and I didn't want to get zealot sentry because the zealots have to be babysitted into not overextending themselves forward of the collolus. In retrospect, if I hadn't lost my initial sentries, I would have been in much much better shape.

Your last sentence is quite true. Hindsight is 20/20, they say. Robo before additional gates is usually better. If done right, you get your 2nd and/or 3rd gate just as warp tech finishes. I hope future games of this type go better for you. This game was surely yours to win with just a few improvements!
Edit: I forgot to mention that I find Robo after 1st gate can be more difficult with short distances between bases. If I don't see a FE, I usually drop two more gates before the Robo, as well. After that, it's a matter of unit composition and teching as soon as you're able.
