Hey guys,
So I've been trying to find some information regarding the priority of units when they are all in one hotkey selection for Terran.
For example:
I have 5 Marauders, 5 Marines, 2 tanks, and 2 ghosts assigned to a single hotkey. What unit will take the priority in that group for it's special functions (such as stim for M/M)?
I'm trying to figure out if creating multiple hotkeys are simply tabbing is my best option at certain points in the game. Any help would be really appreciated!

I might be wrong but I believe the ghosts will be the first group in your hotkey because they have the most abilities.
I'd highly recommend setting different hotkeys for your MM, tanks, and ghosts. It's honestly a lot more efficient than having to constantly tab through your multiple groups in the middle of a battle. Seriously, doesn't it sound a lot easier to hit 1t-2e-3e than 1t-tab-e-tab-e? Which gets even more complicated when you also have medivacs in your control group who automatically heal.

Yeah, I've pondered this a bit and in the end it probably is easier to just set multiple hotkeys (seeing I'm already used to that from BW) however I want to try out other options to see how it works out for me.

I have lost a game recently because I had ghosts in with my MM. When you have just MM selected, T will stim both marines and marauders. If you tab from a ghost, you will select and stim the marines, leaving the marauders unstimmed. GG.

i use MMM on 4 tanks on 5 ghost on 6 vikings on 7
seperating stim, siege mode, and emp makes things alot easier then trying to double click your tanks and ect.

Heya, unit priority is as follows (top first, bottom last);
Terran Raven Ghost Battlecruiser Marine Reaper Siege Tank Viking Banshee Thor Medivac Hellion Marauder SCV Mule
Protoss Mothership High Templar Sentry Phoenix Warp Prism Carrier Stalker Colossus Void Ray Archon Immortal Dark Templar Zealot Observer Probe
Zerg Queen Infestor Corruptor Baneling Roach Broodlord Mutalisk Ultralisk Overseer Overlord Hydralisk Zergling Infested Terran Changeling Drone

Hmm, I can't replicate that in HardCounter. I tried both MM+G (2 diff groups) and MMG. Both marines and marauders always stimmed when tabbing from a ghost.
It sucks that you can't select a group, tab and rebind the group so that the last unit becomes the standard one. Though I guess you could get used to having your finger on TAB.

Updated. Wasn't going to include workers as I didn't think they'd be needed. Added anyway.

What are you basing this on?

What are you basing this on? I'm guessing the editor or just testing.
All units have a priority field in the editor

I am also having this huge problem. Well it wouldn't really be a problem if the priority list shown above was a little bit different. I usually like grouping my units all together and when i have a ghost in the group everything gets screwed up.
Actually, if i have ghost+marine+marauder then it's ok. I just go E for emp, then quickly tab+t twice to have both stimmed (marines and maauders). But when i add medivacs to the group......RAGE!!! :D I seriously think they should make it so that marines and marauders are in the same priority group, that would make things a LOT easier.
For now, i'll just stick to having ghosts in a separate group. It can come in handy when you have to cloack him and EMP a bunch of templars right before engaging with the rest of the army.
Using multiple group becomes painful when you have to manage two simultaneous assaults on different places. What if we just set the Medivacs so they follow a unit? What if that unit dies though? Could we set multiple "follow" orders so that when one dies the medivac automatically follows the other one (by holding shift)? Have to try it out....for sure having a better priority list would be 10 times better....why would you want to have control of your medivac over marauders anyways?
|
Why do you have medivacs in the same group? You know you can just have them scan-move onto a unit in your blob and they'll follow behind your army. This means you don't have to worry about them flying ahead and getting owned (especially problematic when running up cliffs), and when you start kiting they don't stop healing.
Medivacs don't really need to be hotkeyed, especially not in the same group as MM.

Hey just read your post while i was editing mine. Not totally sure what you mean by scan-move though. Could you explain to me what it means/how to do it?

Scan-move is attack-move for units that can't attack. It's basically the same as attack move except instead of attacking they just follow and use auto-cast abilities. You do it with a-click.

Just tried it out, it works great! Thanks for the tip. You can also queue scan-move orders in case the unit you a-clicked on dies.
UPDATE: Just tried out this custom map called "unit test map" or something like that (just search for "unit"). It appears that in a group formed by ghosts, marines and marauders this happens: first unit selected will be ghost, tabbing will switch to rines. Pressing T when focus is on marines will cause BOTH the marines and marauders to be stimpacked. Try it out yourself!

Thanks for all the useful information in this post so far, really a help to me. I, too, believe that it would be nice to have the priority on some of those units changed around a bit..but what I really should be doing is getting used to it the way it is
The hard part will be when you get a group with maybe ghost/raven/medivac..then things could get a bit confusing until I study the list a bit more. Just all muscle memory!
