And please don't say "use your drones." If he micros properly your drones are worthless against them, and even if he doesn't, you lose about half your drones and your economy is wrecked and he has another 6 zerglings on the way in about 30 seconds.
I like to open with a 14 pool for a strong economy build, but I'm thinking just to go straight up 12 pool against a zerg just in case he 6 pools.
And scouting it with an early drone seems kind of useless. By the time you get your drone over there you're at least at 12 supply and by then it's too late to react, and you just lost 50 minerals for taking a drone off your line to scout.
From what I've seen the best thing is to use an overlord to scout his base, and start with a 12 pool and get early zerglings and a spinecrawler in case he 6 pools. Anyone else have a better idea?
btw I'm in plat 2v2 and gold 1v1 (will probably move to plat tomorrow, i am ranked 3rd in my division and will probably move up soon).

You really shouldnt econ build against zerg since everyone is going to early ling/bane you should be prepared to either put pressure on or hold it off yourself, and drones are fine for holding off 6 pool, if youre in gold league and someone is microing that well you are in a lot of trouble either way.

is there a replay or a video of how to properly micro your drones against a 6 pool?

14 pool is fine. Run your drones off creep if you have to but try to continue mining all you need is 300 minerals for 6 lings and queen then he may have8-10 lings in your base so use lings to stall for queen by mixxing them with drones while continueing to produce lings. You can drop a spine too when lings are out. Remember 6 drones dead is probably a win since you have remaining lings and a queen and a drone advantage. Its all about the stall

I go 13 pool, if they 6 pool, their lings are getting to your base as you start your 6 lings, keep drones alive til your lings come and you just won the game
how I micro the drones:
grab all of them at once, as the zergling are approaching them, send all of the drones to one mineral patch (usually one on the edge) and it will make all your drones move over each other and stay together, once they hit the patch then command them to attack. This way they can't be surrounded, they are all attacking together, and targeting them by the opponent can be a pain. Once your drones start seperating, then do it again on the mineral patch on the other end.
Keep in mind that losing a couple drones (2-3) is ok, cuz they have nothing in their base

Drones are definitely not fine vs 6 pool + 2 spinecrawlers on your base.
14 pool on a lot of maps depending on spawn locations is insta GG.
|
10 pool 11 pool 12 pool 13 pool : You won, just keep the drones alive till your lings pop, and place crawlers if he does 14 pool - really up to micro, be focused 15 pool, 14 gas, hatch first etc : you lost, his fagotry paid off
|
If you see a drone in your base that looks like he's ganna drop a spine, you need to drop one just as fast. If his goes up shortly before then you are fine, you should have fended off the longs and have a queen by now to take out the spine

i used the broodlings from my pool to turn the tide here. use your drones by making them all cluster up on a mineral patch then fan out for a surround.

In theory a 9 pool nullifies a 6 pool because of the walking distance on most maps. But you can delay your pool even more and still stand a chance no problem.
The scout is important though... you can also send it out at 8 on small maps like steppes of war. On Kulas a 6 pool would be kinda hard with the distances. So because of the differences in mapsize you don't have to scout early all the time..
6 pool doesn't seem very popular though lately... it's high risk medium reward if you ask me... although an early pool (like 11 or 12) might hit your econ a bit... you'll also get your queen out earlier, resulting in extra production capacity and defense value.
My personal strat is usually 13 pool 13 extractor 16 queen vs Z, with the extractor and pool swapped vs T and P. Just don't be too intimidated by those early 6 zerglings... with some surrounding your drones will stand a good chance as long as you've got that pool morphing. If he attacks your hatch/pool he's mostly wasting his time. And let go of that image that while you're struggling to defend he's already pumping out roaches... that is simply not true and his economy will be crippled...just stay calm and fend his rush off.. check the replay afterwards..

Coming from someone who 6pools in 4v4 (a lot different but still similar), I find it hard to break through 1/2 spine crawlers, a queen, and a couple of lings. You should have no problem getting the lings out in time if you 10pool and should have enough econ to use 1/2 of your drones to get crawlers out. Queen will help you produce faster to stop the push that should come if 6lings at a time isn't working. I typically push with 18 if it doesn't work, and the spine crawlers and lings should destroy my 18 no problem.

cancel gas/take guys off of gas, throw down a spine crawler in your min line and defend it with drone/ling/queen. even if you lose a handful of drones you'll be ahead from having a queen and slightly more drones. if he spine crawler rushes you make a 2nd spinecrawler in range of it (make sure the 1st covers it)

How does protoss counter this 6 pool zerg on steppes of war? Blocking out the base?
|
As toss, always build a choke against Zerg or Random. When you scout out the 6-9 pool, 1) do not build a cycore or assimilator, 2) build a second gateway to complete the wall off, 3) chronoboost zealots, rally to outside of wall, they should come out before your pylon dies, 4) add a second pylon behind the first when it's about to die to preserve the wall, 5) win.
Worst comes to worst you don't win with your counter push, he starts pumping drones, you'll have to get a cycore and gas, and destroy your own pylon, but its no big deal.
|
I've done it several times via slowly holding off the initial push with my probes, it's a painful process especially if you didn't scout it but as soon as you get the wall up you've won. Because the important thing to remember is that they have no economy.
Leaving 2 Zealots behind at the wall and pushing with 4 is usually enough to take them out if they haven't gg'd and left already.

You should be able to just run away with your drones for 5-15 seconds while you wait for your 6 lings to pop. I would also recommend 13 pool at the latest.
