Hello folks! We at IGN eSports are interested in promoting some exceptional mapmakers with a new contest and subsequent tournament featuring the maps selected from the contest.
Who: Anyone who can make a map that is feasible for competitive play of the highest level!
What: Each person can submit up to three maps for consideration. The top 5 maps (as selected by IGN Pro League staff) will be used in an exhibition-style open tournament in November with cash prizes. The winning mapmakers (one person may win more than once!) will receive a bag of IPL merchandise including a t-shirt and other goodies. The top 2 maps will be added into the map pool for future IPL events like IPL Team Arena, IPL 4, and more! These mapmakers will receive even greater prizes from our sponsors, including computer hardware and peripherals! Astro earbuds, Razer keyboards, and N560GTX graphics cards from MSI will be up for grabs!
When: All map submissions are due by midnight on Monday, November 7th! Our open tournament that will showcase the five winning maps will take place on Saturday, November 12th!
Where: Please submit your actual map files and any image files of said maps (to make judging just that much easier) as attachments to iplmapmaking@gmail.com!
There are no hard and fast rules for this mapmaking competition, but PLEASE keep in mind that we are judging based on their potential use for high level 1v1 play. Natural expansions should not be able to be sieged from an enemy's main, mineral counts should be kept realistic, and the map should have no more than 4 possible spawning points. Creativity and innovation are encouraged, but please remain realistic with your entries. Having every base with rich mineral fields and 10,000 critters on the map are sure ways to have your map disqualified from contention. =P
More details about the open tournament will be posted once we have made our selections, so keep an eye on the SC2 Tourneys forum after November 8th for your chance to play on these sweet maps! Thanks, good luck, and have fun!
Keep up with this mapmaking contest and other IGN Pro League happenings with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch.TV!

Awesome! I'll definitely be entering, and I think you should get some great submissions since the TL Map Contest is right at the same time.
|
Great idea! Can't wait to see new maps :D
|
wow only 5 days for judging, that will be quite a challenge for u guys. anyway, nice to see more and more stuff for costum mapmakers
everyone will propably just submit the same maps they submited to the tl contest, will be nice to see how different the finalists will be
|
Can't wait to see the winner and see the difference between the TL winner and IPL winner.
|
Whoa, map making just got a lot more popular with all of these contests springing up here and there.
I really should have made more maps in preparation for these contests. I just do not have enough time anymore.
I'm still going to try this. Not sure if I'll have anything done by then, but oh well, I'll see what I can come up with.
Good luck to everyone competing!
|
I've recently started some maps where I thought "hmmm, I could've used this for the TL contest, but I've chosen my submissions for that already". So for me, perfect timing. This'll be cool.
|
Looks like the mapsmiths have yet another reason to pull out all the stops.
|
Wow, it's mapmaker's heaven at the moment!
I'll just submit my 3 maps that I also submit for TL contest as everybody else , nice timing ; )
Thx IGN for doing this, you don't kill eSports!
|
I love you, i need a better graphic card. :<
|
So will you ship the prizes to anywhere?
|
Haha, oh wow. o: This is certainly magnificent.
|
Thanks for this. Will enter my map. This is great for everyone.
|
INNNNNNNNNNNNNNN THEEEEEEEEEEEERE >: D
gl to all~

Time frame is too small. Of course, I'm sure you are purposefully piggybacking off the TL contest, which is smart, but still...Should be fun.
|
by "Wednesday, November 7th" do you mean monday or the 9th?

Or Wednesday, November 2rd?
|
Hey Josh, will some of the new IPL4 Pacific Qualifier maps do?
|
Are we allowed to submit a team map for the contest? AKA, a map that a map team works together to create?
|
How are they supposed to know wether 1 person or 50 people made the map? oO I don't think they really care who made it anyway^^

I just got confirmation that it is Monday, November 7th. The OP is updated as well.

Yep! Fixed the submission date. Also, if a whole team of mapmakers makes a map, and it's the best submission, we're still going to pick it. You'll have to figure out how to split the hardware prizes, though. =P

IPL is continually impressing me with their community involvement. Awesome job, I'm excited to see this :D
|
heyho I want to submit my map, but I dont know where because i didnt read the OP only the headline, so i post the map here:
Name: Ursadak Valley
Pics:
+ Show Spoiler +
Features: + Show Spoiler +- 12000 Crittres - 5 spawn positions - Natural siegeable from main - No symmetry - All bases are gold - Some spawns have more mineral patches - Island spawnpoint without gas - Random destructible rocks - horizontal and vertical ramps
Balance: + Show Spoiler +I think overall the map is quite balanced. In Europe zerg has maybe a little advantage because of the small rush distances and zerg needs less building, so the critters are good. But if terran spawns at the island its pretty OP because floating buildings and many mariners. I try to give the map small tweaks to fix these issues. In general the balance comes close to 50:50. I tested it with my high bronze friends.

Hopefully Blizzard actually starts to take notice that their map making team is actually terrible and these community maps are the way of the future, just like they were in Brood War.

If so you can use the code [.date]November 7 2011 23:59 KST[/date].

We'll be lenient with the date. Just get them in on your November 7th. =P

From what I've heard, they don't have a map making team, and the balance designers just make the maps.

Haha, ya I'll be interested in that too. I think it was smart to do this on the heels of the TL map making contest, since you'll get more entries. But i'm sure people will be speculating all day about why some maps were chosen to win one contest but not the other.

Maybe that's why Blizzard contacted TL about hosting a map making contest, in which the prize would be getting your map on the ladder

Oh snap, best submit my entries already. Last day!

It's still the 6th for me!

Well, that's timezones I guess.
I have time to fix up one of my maps for a third entry if I'm up to it tomorrow (massively botched its submission for the TL map contest).
I'm just happy I got my latest map, VIP Parking, to a reasonable state in time for something: + Show Spoiler +

Hey Joshy, are we going to get confirmation when we send in our submissions? I sent mine earlier today. Also is there a link to follow the judging or will everyone just find out what maps are picked and when the tournament will be? Lastly, will the mappers get any other feedback on the maps even if they don't win or are not picked for the tournament? Your response would be most appreciated.

Managed to eke out 1 map in time for the deadline. Would kinda like more time, as I have a ton of WIP's, some I like more than others, but here is my map, Liquifaction.
+ Show Spoiler +note:lots of terrain added on the edges, for effect only, the map plays quite normally

@ MisfortuneS Ghost -- Kinda bold with those four golds on a two player map. More income rate but overall less resources. Interesting idea.

Hi folks! Just letting you know that submissions have officially closed and we've already begun looking at the entries very, very closely. We'll announce the winning maps before the tournament this weekend. Thanks for all of your hard work and e-mails!
|
I wish I could submit just one map really fast I'm too late D:
|
IPL you are my only hope to see a good map pool. TL MC broke my high expectation of seeing an awesome map pool. Please don't break my heart e-sport
|
Are there any figures as to how many maps were submitted?

you compare two very different contests with different aimes.
TLMC serached for maps that have Blizzard mappool potential, hence also have to find maps that are fun in casual as in pro game, great for short and for macro oriented matches, have a distinctive visual design and have a layout simple enough to remember after one game.
IPL searches maps that have to fit to a much lesser degree to low skill play. Hence we might see more complex layouts in this contest.
|
i guess the big difference is that ladder maps should be attractive to the players, while actual tournaments should be attracting viewers primarly, why i think that aesthetics should not be undervalued

I want to say how difficult it was for us to choose these maps. We had around 60 submissions, 20 we liked and 8-9 we REALLY liked. Props for all of the great submissions!
|
Any details about the maptesters/judges etc.? Just out of curiosity

I'd love to know what you thought of my map "Combustion", whether good or bad.
