Hello, me and a team of map makers, modders and a few other volunteers have gathered to create a "sequel" as to speak for Wc3. What we want to try and achieve is the same feeling of the integration between an RTS and RPG that Wc3 provided while trying to keep things new and fresh.

What you see here is a teaser trailer (EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS DONE IN THE SC2 EDITOR) we are releasing as our mod steadily approaches alpha testing. Return July 1rst, 2011 for some more exciting content to be unveiled!

I don't think Blizzard is going to like the use of WoW assets and the Warcraft name to create this mod (See StarCraft Universe). But it looks cool nonetheless!

i followed the thread on thehiveworkshop and i think its really cool.
i dont like the music in the teaser, why not use cool wc3 music. and also u should look into the unit pathing because when everything is clumped up like in the battle at the end, it just looks silly.

lol i love how sc2 is a 10000000 games within one game. btw it doesn't feel like WC3 with all that unit bunching. you gonna have dynamic movement for each unit?

whoever said sc2 maps can't compare to wc3 customs will surely be eating their words soon...

along with the mass model importing thing you're inevitably going to do, has anyone found a fix to particles and sprites not copying over with the model?

i just hope this doesn't turn into a fanfic and is ambiguous enough to stick with the multiplayer side of things. dota style.
Zerg definitely does have responses to FFs pre-hive tech. Infestors, baneling drops, burrowed roaches, and mutas are all options

Looks SOOOOOOOOOOOO good. But Blizz is gonna knock this out of the sky just as fast as the "World of Starcraft" Mod from last year.

Units clump too much, and it looked there were way more than 100 supply worth of footmen in that human army, but otherwise it looks incredible. More like WoW than WC3 because it's not cartoony enough .

Great work, hope blizzard doesn't get this shut down.

I would just change the name to avoid any problems WoS had. Any generic, barely-Warcraft-related fantasy name should do.

This looks pretty incredible, though. I can only imagine further down the road, actually being able to play WC3 (with better graphics) from within SC2.

Damn impressive.

Keep it light and modular if you can. I suppose this is something of a difficult request, but since you have demonstrated the ability to produce the assets for such a game, I truly suggest you consider not overscripting and trying to make it an experience based on your plans alone. Ofc do this, but ensure that your tools can be reinterpreted and reused by others, that way competitive balancers can help polish things.

Still, I'm in awe of what you've achieved. I can't tell whether you've appropriated WoW assets and re-used them or modelled everything yourself. If the latter that's just crazy, if the former, it still works surprisingly well.

I'd recommend, however, that you take some tips from blizzard's design philosphy. Make units more distinct and recognizeable, at the moment you're getting blobfactor, and that's only going to get worse with more units added in.

Looks great, but if you want your map to live past a few weeks I suggest making your own textures/models. Art, (c) Blizzard Entertainment, Inc would be sufficient if the assets were licenced as creative commons or some such, but I doubt they are.

Personally I don't give a shit either way, but blizzard has 100% control over which maps are allowed on battle.net, and if your map becomes remotely popular they will eventually get wind of it.

Would be a shame if this puts a stop to the project.

Fan made WC content for SC2, sweet!! At least someone out there still believes the WC universe is supposed to be experienced in RTS format...

Two questions:

Are these for multi-player or do they contain single player content?

Also, does it include the WC3 style "hero" mechanics?

They just took down the videos until the name was changed. The project still exists and Blizzard did nothing to directly harm it.

The limitations aren't related to model/texture swapping and more to do with trigger lag and an extremely fussy data editor, so this map change anything much in that respect ;p.

I am REALLY looking forward to this map, most particularly for the custom models. The general lack of fantasy/medieval models was a big limitation, but now....!

this sounds like a great idea! turn starcraft into warcraft, run into limitations doing so and take long enough to do it that an actual warcraft sequel comes out that would have been better suited for the project but you're already long burned out by then! Oh wait, that was Project Revolution (with the games flipped)

Maybe you can avoid that since you aren't remaking War3 with all its quirks and such but doing your own thing. Best of luck avoiding the blizzhammer and creating something

has anyone actually figured out dynamic unit movement yet? it seems like the "super increased pathing radius" fix worked pretty well for him, but i'm sure its already a consideration. maybe even in conjunction.

Yea in the actual multiplayer I don't think you'll have quite as many units so it shouldn't be a problem.

Dynamic unit movement and unit collision is something we're looking into, we know from MavericK's brood war mod that Unit collision is something solvable however Dynamic Movement maybe something more difficult.

Thanks for all the warm replies so far! We hope to get our site fully running, we plan to have places for comments, suggestions and feedback. Nice, I totally thought it was a completely different game until i saw the fight scene, (units look like slow lings trying to surround). Maybe adding more spacings between the units will give it a more Warcraft 3 feel

This looks absolutely amazing, been trying to get some xbox friends to get starcraft saying its like 1000 games in 1, showed them this video as a taste of what people can do with the map editor and 4 of em went out to get the game today :D

And I am also so SO glad you've got a team making WC2 for this. That's gonna be fucking LEGENDARY.

If you're doing that I'm gonna play the WC2 campeign so many times. OMG and the beyond the dark portal campaign!? That was MADE to be played with a good engine.

PS, with what you've got there even in the teaser trailer you can make the opening cinematic for WC2:



If you wanted to truely go the hero's journey the original warcraft (orcs and humans) isn't half bad either for campaign... altho actually I guess the whole "road" stuff could be annoyingly tricky... (you'd have to make it like a pylon essentially... yeah that's probably too much actually).

Anyway super excited to see this!

If you can fix the pathing so the clumping isn't so ridiculous I'll give this a 100/10. It looks fantastic so far.

I hope this gets popular kind of like "Dota" on wc3.

Hopefully with all the popularity this idea can grow into a new game alltogether!

I would love to play a campain because the sc2 campain was a 3 day affair!

Multiplayer would just be amazingly fun. With unit control and more durability from individual units this would own.

Looks great so far, but something must be done about that clumping caused by the social forces collision model. There have been mods for SCII that have addressed this and i think if you looked into it, it would go a long way to making the battles look much more epic and less like a huge blob (which is, for some reason, the way blizz chose to do it for SCII, but not in WC3 and SC:BW)

Why is there only Humans and Orcs? is it because of the lore or something? or is it because you didn't start creating them?
I mean, I don't want to miss parts of the lore just because you want the game to be more like WC2 than WC3, or any other reason :X

Question is if it's gonna be a SC2 warcraft, or a warcraft / BW warcraft, using pretty much the SC2:BW settings.
Either way it'll be awesome to see. Personally I hope for a SC2 warcraft, as I'm all for simple gameplay.

The same exact thing was said about BW's pathing, but people praised Blizzard endlessly for getting rid of the terrible pathing AI. Fact is that the clumping is a pain in the ass - even if you constantly micro your units, every single time you tell them to do something the AI will automatically clump them. Not only that, blobs actually reward players with bad control until you get to higher skill levels (where good multi-tasking can punish blobbers with AoE effects) since it makes it so easy to get units wherever you want and it also maximizes the DPS output of a ranged army.

Hi guys! I'm not the leader of the project, but currently RoarMan is unavailable for a day or two, so please note everything I'm about to say is not final.

As of now, we are planning to release a small, short demo map which will be similar to the Rexxar campaign in Wc3. It's release date isn't certain but maybe within a week.

- We ARE working on a unit movement system so that it will feel like Warcraft 3. Our gameplay style, as far as melee goes, will be less units (than Sc2) and slightly bigger model sizes. Again, this is similar to Warcraft 3.

- Currently, there will only be two races playable for melee: The Horde and the Theramore Alliance (the humans and dwarves who came from the Eastern Kingdoms to escape the Scourge). The reason we only have two races planned for now is merely due to development time. We want to get melee stuff out there for people to play. THEN, after we have completed and perfected these two races, we will then move on to Night Elves and Undead. Each will also have their own campaign missions. If this mod takes off and continues to be developed, we will add another two races and their campaigns: the Illiadri and The Burning Legion (my favorite ).

^TLDR: We aren't cutting races out because of lore, nor are we recreating wc2, we are being practical from a development standpoint.

Looking at the site im not sure quite sure what they're doing anymore. I'm fine with a revamped campaign but I thought they were remaking the original game, but it seems as if theyre changing it entirely. The heroes are not the same for one. Not that interested anymore, but might still look into this.


Edit: Also the heroes mainly seem to be WoW clones. Some old spells are kept but mostly all changed. The races are different in terms of tech as well. Humans have items in different buildings? What? Why? I cant imagine this working out well in game..Maybe I'm just trying to retain my love of wc3, but I dont like the changes...

This was never supposed to be a remake if wc3, but rather a new gamein the warcraft universe. That's why it's called "a new dawn" rather than RoC/TfT. Also, hero models from wow are placeholders. Please read the thread next time before you post.

If you're going to have two different races in a competitive game, I think they should continue the way they're going. The Blizzard RTS franchises tend to feature races that are very different but still manage to be balanced. If we followed your line of reasoning, Zerg, Protoss and Terran would all produce units in the same way, which is one of the key ways we distinguish between the races.

Having the items in different structures appeals to me for this reason, its a good way to distinguish between the races without being completely gamebreaking or outrageous.

Anyway it looks like a great project, I hope you guys can stay motivated and produce a really awesome mod.

joking, but not really. there are some decisions for the paladin class, for example, that make no sense at all. Choosing the name "templars verdict" for a passive chance to gain holy power ala combat rotation in an rts - lol.

and the MK ultimate is fairly retarded. chance of instantly killing units under 25% health. so many flaws in design it's not worth mentioning them all.

Looks awesome. With mods like this this, the marketplace, blizz was talking about, looks more like a not that bad idea. People may pay for this. But depends on the amount of content and whether they keep updating it.

actually since they use blizzard assets I doubt they could charge people for this, will be hard to get original mods no rip offs from sc1 or other games there

i was really excited about this til i saw the last fight scene in the trailer, and it seemed to me like the modders/mapmakers dont really understand the essence of WC3: small unit counts, intense micro battles. That single battle probably had more supply than you could reach in WC3 for each side, and it was just footmen

Should we start right after the frozen throne? -like we were originally going to do- Or should we take WoW lore into account and start from, say, the end of Wrath of the Lich King?

I think most of the sc2 players have a ROC and TFT playing experience, but don't have a WoW experience at all, you should definitely start after TFT .

Update:

Hey guys! Unfortunately I'm sorry to report that progress has been slower than usual... Richie, our leader and main data man has had computer trouble, our 3D modeler's computer literally blew up, and one of our artists has had to leave do to real life commitments. HOWEVER, we will not give up. We have weathered much worse and we're still here...

We are recruiting more people, and if you would like to help or join the team, please don't hesitate to send me or Richie a PM here. Also do go over to our Sc2Mapster recruitment post to learn more on what exactly we need.

On a brighter note I am happy to inform that we have pretty much finished the core data work for the orc tech tree. All that needs doing is a few abilities and some serious data editing on the main Warcraft features that differentiate it from Sc2, mainly the armor system (oh yeah and art, but we'll get to that later).

Maybe scale the buildings a bit more? Might need to re texture but I dont think the units themselves should be bigger than the structures.

Looks really good, but are you planning on making it pretty similar to WC3 or making units do very different things, cause while replicating or semi replicating WC3 is cool, I think making a new game and not just new graphics will be better.

Looks really good, but are you planning on making it pretty similar to WC3 or making units do very different things, cause while replicating or semi replicating WC3 is cool, I think making a new game and not just new graphics will be better.


You'll be glad to know that we are trying to stick to the Warcraft style of play, however most units are getting changed in some way, some more than others. We are NOT replicating Wc3. This IS a new game, just with the warcraft gameplay style.

I think if it would be shut down it would actually be a good indicator that Blizzard working on Warcraft 4. I do think though they don't mind as you don't use the same models from Warcraft 3.

as you cannot play it without buying starcraft 2 I don't see why they would want to prevent it from being made
doubly so as blizzard are the license holders for warcraft

From what i can see none of it or very little of it is WC3 models. It is mostly wow models. Through personally i don't know much about how they are extracted.

And btw to the makers really awesome work the previews looks great hope we soon get more.

back when i was actively working on a Warcraft 3 map i looked into pulling WoW models into Warcraft 3
they are compatible but it is an assload of work to pull even one model in because each model has many many pieces you need for it to appear properly
