I'm not really a stranger to RTS, I've been playing RTS since I was a young kid. The very first RTS I played wasn't SC1 but a game called Tzar: The Burden of the Crown which is similar to SC1 in art style but very different in gameplay. The second RTS I played was the Empire Earth series, then I played SC1 and then SC2. I also have a few other RTS on console and on PC such as Empire at War and Company of Heroes.
The funny thing is, I originally liked RTS because I could build cities. In Tzar, that's all I'd do, was build a city and that's not even a city builder. I would build a city and defend against attacks... And I would do that for hours, defending and expanding my city. I never really got into city builders though, I found them kind of boring but that's just me. I'm sure there's high quality city builders you all like, it's just not my cup of tea.
In SC2, I'm not really like that anymore. I use what I need and get what I need. I try to build efficiently but I'm not MLG or anything. Just an average player looking to have fun. The highest AI I can win in a long game is against Hard. Harder and above are AI I can't keep up with. I do have all the achievements to beat the AI in under 4 minutes though, even for the Elite AI which I thought I'd never get but I got it!
Anyway, I've been making RTS maps for a long time. Tzar had a map editor too and it was relatively powerful, I had lots to make in that game and lots of familiarity that helped in other editors such as Galaxy. Anyway, that's my RTS story in a nutshell. Thanks for reading if you read this far
