The Highlander - Ro32/16 Results & Reps
July 27th, 2009 11:30 GMT
Image thanks to Xeofreestyler Over the weekend the Round of 32 and Round of 16 of the Highlander were played out. Only two rounds into the tournament and there are already many upsets and surprises. Many players stepped up their game to a new level and brought us some very good games - all of which are available for download in replay form. There are no games this weekend since WCG Germany is taking place - so instead we are going to bring to you a cast of the best games of the Ro32 and Ro16. More details about that to come!
So let's dig right in. Assuming you read the front page (you did, right?) then you will know that this post is going to spoil the results of the weekend's games. And so here we go! (retreat now if you don't want to be spoiled - just skip to the bottom for reps)
You can also view the bracket here
As you can probably see, there are quite a number of replacements which happened. If I try to form a complete list I'm bound to forget people, but some of the more surprising drop outs were Valor finalist Fenix and SC2GG finalist Yayba (who qualified for this via the prelim tournament). As such we got a number of excellent replacements for the drop outs such as Haypro, Xiaozi and Sarens. (There are others as well).
The Round of 32 was light on the upsets, but boy were we surprised! Many players stepped up their games and fought hard close battles with some of the titans of this tournament. Aerials fought an incredibly close series with Dreiven, Machine took it to JF, Dimaga almost knocked out Idra and Lz took a game off ret. There are many ggs in that lot so be sure to check them out.
Then came the Round of 16... Some of the games in here have been deferred to a later date for one reason or another. Idra vs Castro is being played soon and Mondragon vs White-Ra is also going to happen in a few days. Despite this, the Round of 16 features what will probably be the upset of the tournament. Horror defeated ret 2-1. Ret exits the tournament empty handed and Horror advances.
Let that sink in for a little while.
No discredit to Horror, but ret was a heavy favorite to reach the finals, or at least the semifinals and to lose at this stage is nothing short of shocking. The rest of the Round of 16 has been of high caliber, but no overly surprising results. The remaining matches feature some of the tournament heavyweights and if Castro manages to steal the series from Idra (he's not feeling too well as far as I know), this tournament has been flung wide open for anyone.
What we do know, however, is that the Ro8 is set to be sick. JF goes up against Brat_OK in a TSL rematch (and Liquibition rematch). The series is a Bo5 so look forward to seeing another closely fought series between two amazing players. After sniping the ZvT master ret, Horror looks to be a dangerous weapon. He runs up against Dinot in the Round of 8 (who thoroughly destroyed Strelok in the Ro32) and that also promises to be a very interesting series. There is a $1020 first prize, probably the largest prize all year, so you can be sure that these guys will be giving it their all.
Obviously, with this many replacements the Bracket Contest cannot be run fairly anymore (not that anyone would have picked these results anyway!). Hence a new contest will be run and details about that will be released in the coming days. Remember to check out the weekend's cast, which I will be nagging you all about later in the week.
Oh and by the way. Here is the rep pack (in case you missed it on the front page - now updated to include idra vs castro) Here is Idra vs Castro in case you downloaded the old pack and just want these games
G5 vs White-Ra and Kolll vs Sarens are currently missing, when I track them down I will make the appropriate updates to the pack.
Stay tuned for further updates over the course of the week!

Because if you've followed his games you would know that he has come extremely close to being eliminated in the past (e.g vs castro, brat_ok). In addition to that, Idra's condition is no different to when Mondi was in his prime, or JF, or any other good foreigner for that matter.

God dam this tournement is stacked with good player. Can wait to watch the rep

Considering replacements I have done pretty well on my pics. I have one whole side of the bracket correct up to this point! and the other.. well thanks ret lawl
EDIT: So to clarify the whole win $100 for the closest thing is out of the window?

Well, that is just not true. JF or Mondi were never paid to play 10+ hours / day with real progamers and with support of a real coach as far as I know. I have to agree with Heimatloser here. My oppinion is that the days of his amateur tournament should have been over in the moment of his first televised game.

Gawd darn it... Well I'm gonna keep following my picks and see how they go. I had Iefnaj v Brat_OK (not the toughest pick i suppose), I also picked Mondregan to win his first game and come up against White-Ra. Incase your wondering I also picked Tarson to play the winner of that match.... makes a change I got something right in picks haha.
BTW hows things bro? You overseas or back in NZ nowadays?

reps are one of the best parts of these types of tournaments, thanks for providing them!
|
lol and they used to say how Idra would never win anything, ohhhh the irony!

EDIT: I'm dumb, and can't tell zerg players apart, apparently.

Let's say he beats Castro...that would set him up to play ToT)Xiaozi. You may recognize that name as the fellow who whumped Idra during a TeamLiquid sponsored event relatively recently. Not to underestimate Idra, who's clearly *a* favorite...just perhaps not *the* favorite... --oberon you mean the guy who ling allined me in the tournament that i then eliminated him from?
he whumped me good and hard all right

Oh the Mana vs Enivid games where sick good p-p games!

Too bad because of drop-outs the "Bracket contest" is not valid anymore but oh well... we will do new one
btw. about: "G5 vs White-Ra and Kolll vs Sarens" replays...they do have it right? Because I remember that if replays are not saved there would be problems with declaring a winner or something.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to "Bracket contest" and more great replays.
