[GSL] Code A Finals October
October 10th, 2011 01:45 GMT
Code A Final PreviewFull results & standings for GSL October on Liquipedia I suppose the IPL3 finals will be over by the time many of you read this. But here we are, reminding you that there is still plenty of high level Starcraft to be had after the curtain falls in Atlantic City. One of the most coveted prizes in pro-gaming, a Code S spot, is on the line. The honor of being one of the best new stars to represent the non-Terran races is also on the line. ST_Curious and FXO_z face off in what is rapidly becoming known as one of the most consistently epic and hotly contested confrontations in Starcraft II: The Code A Finals.
Code-A Finals: The Yellowbrick Roadby: Probe1It's time again. It seemed like only a short while ago I was fervently cheering on SUPERSTAR and throwing away my liquibets on MC. But here we are at the finals already. Six players are already in for the up and downs; their success in Code A: October has already been secured. Now it's time to decide who will be remembered and who will become a footnote. For the first time in six months the Code A finals will be decided in a non-mirror match. The icing on top: neither race is Terran! Can't really go wrong with TvZ. Hell, over half of the defining matches of our game are TvZ. So pick your favorites and get ready to cheer your hearts out for the two competitors who are trying to make their maiden voyages into Code S. These two GSTL all stars are ready to break onto the biggest tournament in the world tonight. Let's take a look at who they are. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/3SVIN.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/images2/7/77/Curiouscodeas2-pxp.png) Oz AKA Twilight AKA Sage Killer AKA The Secret ProtossSecret Protoss is the most apt description of our up and coming player from FXO. He has been a mentor and a coach on every team he's played for and, unfortunately, has been overshadowed by the other players he helped. By looking at his results there wasn't really much to say before October. His previous best win streak was one and at worst he lost four games straight. There wasn't much to celebrate outside of the practice house. But the record will mislead you. Every match this season, he has proven that he truly belongs in the elite echelon. Even in the cases where he didn't win the game! Time in the booth and playing against teammates in practice seems to have taught him well. During these long, unsung months, Oz was building a valuable cache of experience. He has earned himself, at last, a shot at Code S. His victory here will be all the more sweet over Curious. fOu may go by a different name, but he still has the chance to the crushing all-kill they suffered in GSTL. After showing up Sage in every possible way in the semi-finals, Oz has only one last thing to prove. If he can take the Code A crown, he will not only be his race's greatest hope, but one of the best players in all of Starcraft II. Curious AKA Creep AKA All Kill CentralFirst, I want to talk about Curious' slightly related GSTL success. He was a total badass in the GSTL and there's just no way that doesn't rub off somehow when he's competing in individual leagues. Curious is the number one threat to everyone sitting in those cushy Terran chairs during the drawing next month. Oz may be the Cinderalla story we all want to see culminate with a victory in the finals but Curious is the indomitable machine. He has left a trail of dead nerds in his wake, taking every series this tournament 2-0 except in the semi-finals. He won 3-0 there. In fact, the last time this guy lost in an individual match was against Maru in the qualifiers quarter finals. I don't remember how that happened so I'll assume the real Maru was present and distracted Curious. How can you.. what can I.. I don't even.. Curious man. Curious. All-kills and 14 win streaks. This guy is made out of sheer awesome and terror. In a lot of ways, I can see Curious taking the series without losing a single game. His ZvP comes across as solid and refined. His win rate is awesome. The only thing that makes me cautious is that he progressed through Red October without a Protoss encounter until tonight's game. Even so, I have complete faith in his ability to be a total B.A.M.F. and you can quote me wildly on that.
I've heard every caster say how favored Crossfire is for Protoss. Yeah, if Zerg lets them be. If Curious is caught out in the narrow corridors near malicious sentries or if Oz can delay it to late game Collosus play and negotiate the trip to Curious's natural without being picked apart by corruptors, then he'll take the game... but I just don't see that happening. There are too many opportunities and the third base for Oz is a bleak choice between taking the gold and an almost as distant natural third. Curious can lock down map control with mutalisks and no expansion is a bad expansion for Zerg here. Prediction: Curious Curious < Bel'Shir Beach 1.2> OzZvP: 2-0 (100%) .. it's too soon to tell. That's the best I can give you. I like the changes for balance. The map seems a lot less Zerg favored now than before but after only watching two games I honestly have no idea how the architecture alone will decide engagements and compositions. Heavy stargate play could prove to be a grand stroke for Oz but Curious won't be made a fool on Zerg beach. Prediction: ? Curious < Tal'Darim Altar LE> OzZvP: 141-157 (47.3%) Say what you want but Blizzard copies really good maps. Tal'darim has one of the closest ZvP win rates in the entire pool and it's almost entirely down to skill to decide the victor. While I can't say I've seen either play this matchup on TDA recently, I can't help but think Oz will have something planned. Whether it's a Sage-esque Stargate/Harass heavy approach that we've seen out of HerO and others lately or a traditional deathball or bust composition, I'm betting it all on Oz here. Prediction: Oz Curious < Daybreak> OzZvP: 3-11 (21.4%)Don't ask questions. This is how it's going down. Prediction: Curious Curious < Xel'Naga Fortress> OzZvP:10-9 (52.6%)Going against the record again, I'm going to say that Oz has something planned here. I don't know what; I don't know how. But I do know that his win over SUPERSTAR was so convincing that I think he will be solid on Xel'Naga Fortress no matter who his opponent is. Prediction: Oz Curious < Metalopolis 1.1> OzZvP: 17-20 (45.9%)I've heard casters say Metalopolis is for Zerg map. A lot. I'm going against them here. 2 base timings, blinking up and force fielding the ramp to the main, stargate play: All and all there are too many ways for Protoss to bring the pain on Metal. And if it were any other pair going against each other I would say Protoss has it. But we're not talking anypro. We're talking Curious. He's going to have something planned. Prediction: ? Curious < Antiga Shipyard 1.1> OzZvP: 7-5 (58.3%)More often than not Antiga is decided by a game of drones. Who will be greedier and survive the other players punishment will decide who will win if my predictions are off and it makes it to the ace match? I think the money is in the bag for Curious. It's a large, easily controllable map for Zerg and if as long as he is diligent in scouting then Oz will be at a disadvantage when Curious takes the gold base. Barring an early ending to the final game, Zerg will take this macro map and the championship. Prediction: Curious
I love an up and comer but Curious is just unstoppable. He's going to take the season of Protoss glory, stomp on it and infest the remains into a teaser unit for the next expansion.

An interesting read. Hope it doesn't turn out that way, though. Code S is sad enough.
I hope this is a good series! Can't wait to see it
No matter who wins I can't wait to see how these guys do in Code S. Oz has been around a while but hasn't really proved that he has what it takes in the individual leagues and Curious seemed to come out of nowhere with the wrath of the Overmind behind him.
This should be a good finals. I'm looking forward to it.
I love it when a somewhat unknown takes on a known boss. Tbh, I really want a protoss to win.
I just like how Oz's previous best win streak was... one.
really hope Oz wins! Oz fighting!
So excited for Oz, hope he can pull the win out!
Both players have great win rate against the opponent's race, so I'm hoping to see some amazing play.
awesome write-up! thank you! curious fighting! : D
great write-up, hoping for a protoss to advance
Interesting writeup. I'm really hoping for Oz to win, but it should be a close final and I think Curious has the edge going into it.
i dont understand your daybreak prediction
I really hope that Oz makes it through so we don't have so many protoss in up and downs killing each other for a spot in code S.
I ask a lot of questions! I don't accept just what you say, i'm Curious!! <3 Tasteless
Code A Finals very rarely dissapoint, GO GO Oz!
gogo probe1, nice writeup :D
Nice, but hopefully Oz can win.

My Belief is that Curious wins 4-1, but i am looking for a good Code A Finals!!
Yeah 4-2 were my predictions also, but i just randomly made that up while you have gone into so much detail! good writeup nonetheless
Oz can do it i beleive haha
Nice words, thanks for writing them!
As a Zerg player, I find myself in a strange situation, actually rooting for Oz here. eSports needs a new Protoss torchbearer and while I'm not entirely convinced Oz is the Next Big Thing, one more guaranteed P in code S can only be a good thing. FXO fighting!
Definitely rooting for Oz but I just can't see him beating Curious. Hopefully he uses some warp prism play to try and edge out a victory.
I was about to read the writeup but I got distracted by Losira, is that bad?

Looking forward to some great games tonight but I think it'll be a 4-1. Probe, we should place bets on IRC
This is kind of like Thorzain vs. Naniwa in the TSL3, where once I finally believe that Thorzain was not a fluke, I still find him the underdog going into the finals. OZ HWAITING!!!
Really nice article! I can't wait for an awesome final between Oz and Curious, though, I believe that Oz will manage to take it 4-3.
Great writeup, except for: For the first time in six months the Code A finals will be decided in a non-mirror match. The icing on top: neither race is Terran! Can't really go wrong with TvZ. Hell, over half of the defining matches of our game are TvZ. is totally contradictory.
hahaha infest the remains!!
A protoss player can dream. Go OZ!

I'm sorry to be critical here, but the write-up for this Code A final is too short, and I find that numerous things haven't been mentioned. (Before I get started, obviously the writer and I have differing opinions, so if I do say anything vaguely insulting I don't mean it.)
If you look at Curious's ZvP record, it stands at 16-10, which is pretty good, all things considered. Additionally, his last two PvZ's have been losses, according to TL's Player Directory (which I'm assuming is accurate).
Then look at Oz's PvZ record.
5-0.
Granted, I haven't seen Curious's play recently, and I could be absolutely and completely wrong and Curious would win 4-0, but I'm saying Oz to take this out 4-1.
First, I want to talk about Curious' slightly related GSTL success. He was a total badass in the GSTL and there's just no way that doesn't rub off somehow when he's competing in individual leagues. Curious is the number one threat to everyone sitting in those cushy Terran chairs during the drawing next month.
To be honest, GSTL doesn't necessarily reflect success in the individual league. Obviously, not every player who succeeds in GSTL DOESN'T do well in the individual league. And yes, I'm only using one example here. But DongRaeGu dominated the team league for a long time, yet he only managed to receive an entry into Code S only recently (and I do believe he deserved it for a long time, he just wasn't able to pass through the Code B preliminaries).
In other parts, I would like the write-up to include the path that each player had taken to reach the Code A finals. Yes, it'll be a bit longer, but this article is slightly too short... then again, the writer may have had real life obligations and had to churn out an article in thirty minutes (I know that feel bro).
Regardless, thank you for writing up a preview, and I hope I don't get bashed for this post :S

Botched the formatting in the last section with the bold and stuff, but nice writeup. OZ FIGHTING!
Nice prediction..As a protoss player,i hope Oz will get the chance to Code S,though good luck for Curious----a Zerg pro.

Well... don't want to "bash" for this but it seems like you are making a prediction based off of their records, and even admitted to not watching Curious. Curious's play has been fearsome recently, and if you noted who they played in their respective matches, you would notice that Curious has beaten some much stronger opponents.

With the conclusion of IPL, this week for Starcraft 2 has started amazing, and now going to be followed up by GSL and its Code A finals, and finishing off with MLG Orlando. I've still not yet watched all the IPL VoDs.
Looking forward to the Code A finals, it's been always exciting and glad to see Protoss did well overall on this level.
Damn didn't know daybreak was 3-11 zvp and metal is slightly favoring protoss kind of surprises me to. Honestly overall the map pool seems very balanced. Will be interesting to see who wins

Wow, I d not realise that Daybreak favours Protoss so much.
Dat cutie LosirA Rooting for Oz, go do it Brotoss
lol after reading this, i was watching maru like 30 minutes :D
The Daybreak winratio is amazing o.O
Gogo Oz, be a beacon of hope for the sad zealot!

LOL.

As I saw how Curious made his way through Code-A, I have little doubt he will win it. Given his recent performance, I think he really belongs in Code-S. Because it's not just that he performed – there always will be two Code-A finalists regardless – it is how he performed. He makes me afraid.
Curious is one of my favorite zergs, and Twilight is on my favorite team... Tough pick!

Haha, I do appreciate the work that TL writers do :D I do a bit of gaming article writing, I know how tough it is to push out a decent length piece of work. I'm merely suggesting some things and what I believe might happen based upon my views: I hate being one of the people who simply go "lol zerg will win because protoss is underpowered [insert sad zealot here]". <3
You guys... You should know by now every final ends with a 4-0.
Curious <Daybreak> Oz ZvP: 3-11 (21.4%)
Don't ask questions. This is how it's going down. Prediction: Curious
Yo.

+ Show Spoiler +;___________;
GG Oz. Sad that he cheesed the last one -- he was playing quite well.
+ Show Spoiler +wow 4-0 curious yet another one sided gsl and yet another loss for protoss edit: added spoiler
almost getting used to see they crying protoss pic related to the gsl articles now
i have not been watching code A but it seems like the finals came way to fast it seems like only a week ago we had our last code A finals
I think you meant to write "PvZ" in the first paragraph under the header. Great read!
what a fitting front page photo

No no, that's every Code S final. Usually the Code A finals are pretty good!
4-2 if we're lucky, but for some reason im thinking a 4-0 or 4-1 is in the making
"A game of drones" made me chuckle. And I assume "A clash of lings" is next?
+ Show Spoiler +I dare say this finals was even worse than the Nestea vs Losira one sided manhandling. I am glad I didn't stay up to watch it live. Poor Oz

A Storm of Storms?

So, who won this sh1t? Its looks like was one sided but no1 told who the hell won!! I wanna know, could not watch because i was at work ...
He's going to take the season of Protoss glory, stomp on it and infest the remains into a teaser unit for the next expansion.
ROFL.
Nice writeup, but I am hopeful that Oz takes the crown.
I'm happy with either of them winning but I'm thinking that Curious will take it. He's been stomping people as of late and I think his streak will continue through the finals.
Edit: and now I'm going to watch the vods!
Well, I hope Oz won't be disheartened for the up-and-down matches, I really want to see him in code S!
I think it's good that there's not a terran in the code A finals but I think it's obvious the jury is still out regarding balance. I'll start feeling a lot better about the game when I see the code S numbers begin to even out and I don't think that will happen in the near future especially considering there is such a slow turnover rate in Code S.
after watching IPL, idont think protoss has the same amount of trouble they had with terran prepatch, now it seems like every toss is falling to zergs.
That game at bel'shir beach....PvZ is too hard, sorry.
+ Show Spoiler +I felt like Oz kind of fell apart on the last 2 games. It was rather disappointing, really
+ Show Spoiler +I expected a 4-0 out of Curious or a 4-3 from Oz. Sadly it was the former. Curious's zerg is very gud holy carp.
+ Show Spoiler +I wish that the games themselves were as good as the preview. Maybe the code S Finals curse is spreading.
Nice preview, thanks. Will probably go and watch the VODs now
it's simply ridiculous...
+ Show Spoiler + In code S, 1 P out of 16 players. Code a final with a protoss, because there was a mirror in the semi. Balance patch completly failed...

+ Show Spoiler + Well, I think balancing pvp along with the other matchups will go a long way as well. I don't think many people would think that Oz would have had a better chance pvz than sage would. Once PvP has *some* kind of safe smart play associated with it, you'll end up with situations where the best player (for the next matchup) won't always win.
not sure how to make a new thread. anyone care to help
4-1 curious.. that's my prediction
4-3 for Oz. PROTOSS FIGHTING! Even tho the loser of this will most likely do well in the up and down matches as well! Cheers!
