After representatives of both the Protoss and Terran races have faced the Arena, it is now time for a Zerg player to step up and stare down its horrors. Entering the TeamLiquid Arena on Sunday the 24th of January (22:00 CET // 16:00 EST // 13:00 PST) will be…
He finished 1st in 2007’s WCG USA, made TSL2’s top48, organised the Highlander Tournament and was on TV-show The Ultimate Gamer, yet the Bearzerg is perhaps best known for being a valued member of our community. We’re happy to have such a celebrity!
>> Fodder Who takes on our Hero? You know the drill Leave a link to your ICC account, your race and rank (C+ or lower) and we’ll randomly draw participants from the enlisted people.
>> Maps Maps will be picked from the iCCup mappack by the Hero (no repeats). We will however require him to play one TL-submitted map for a complete victory. So, have a map that you haven’t seen in a long time? Maybe one you made yourself? Submit them here (with a link if needed) and we’ll throw up a poll before the show.
You guessed it, again we’ll be looking for TL-submitted handicaps to complete the batch. List your most creative or crueliest ideas here and we’ll let a poll decide which ones we’ll use.
Obey the Speed Limit - No fast Lings/Hydras/Overlords No Place to HIDE - Cannot burrow ANY units Death Touch - Hero Must plague his own Attacking units Papa Roach - No Infesting
Sounds like fun ... Thanks for hookin it up TL
**NOTE** I can play that day for sure!! ... no problems on my schedule!!
Handicap: Restrictive Evolution Once an upgrade is completed for a unit, other upgrades which share a building with it can't be upgraded during that game. Exceptions: Burrow, Lurker Aspect. I'm not sure if Evo Chamber should be split 3-way or split to attack/armor, but thinking the latter.
Perma doom drop: All of the players overlords must be together throughout the match. If a set of overlords are not together one or both must move towards the other immediately.
Starcraft 2: Use 1hatch queen, you can't make anything but zerglings/drones before a queen has been spawned.
Underlords: You can’t upgrade your overlords.
Tricky: You can’t stack your mutas, use moving shot, hold lurker, dronedrills or glitch units through buildings/minerals. Furthermore your opponent is allowed to use allied mines or any other glitch.
Get low: Your air units now act as ground units, which means that air units (including overlords) can’t fly over cliffs and must use ramps and whatnot like ground units.
Devotion: When a hydra den exists you can only build ground units (no ovies), when a spire exists you can only build air units. You must have one of the buildings to build anything but zerglings/drones.
Unsafe ovies: Your overlords must be atleast 1screens distance outside of your base(s) and over walkable terrain at all times.
F91: You cannot build your spawning pool at 4,5,9,10,11,12 or 13 population. Additionally you cannot build hatcheries at 9,10,11,12 and 13 population.
Irreversible: When you have made combat units from a hatchery it wont be able to produce drones ever again..
Single use: You cannot unburrow units.
Gassibalism: Defilers can only consume gas units (But not hydras, this ofcourse negates the handicap in the OP)
No morphing: Hydras -> Lurkers and Muta -> Guardian/devourer not allowed.
October: Get 24 lings before lair
Great macro: Hatcheries can only spawn units when 3 larvae are present. (Easy mode: this kicks in at 9 supply.)
Ultimate Gamer: Play your opponent on a map of his choice, this includes UMS maps, and any pro circuit map. Atleast no self-made, rigged, ridiculously imbalanced maps.
All possible upgrades before Hive (if another handicap prevents certain upgrades they will ofc not have to be done). No Overlord upgrades. No speed upgrades (can ofc be narrowed down to a specific unit type). Max 6 drones on gas. No zergling upgrades (speed and attack speed). No hydralisk upgrades (speed and range).
"tl submition" just means any map that people vote for, right? Or is it specifically a user-made map? Don't want to post map suggestions that will get raped by desti or something popular/common etc.
Handicap suggestions: Weak Intel: No scouting with drones Strategy Narration: Must tell opponent what build he'll be doing at the 1 minute, 4 minute, and 8 minute mark. No Greed Allowed: Max 2 bases mining minerals Queens!: Must build 3 queens before upgrading to hive Blind Spot: No overlords in main base (must be at the nat and other strange places) Slow Gas: Max 2 drones per extractor Slow Hands: 140 APM maximum (if we get some nice APM monitoring stuff in).
I think inc is a great pick for the arena, he has a creative enough style to put up a very smart and entertaining fight with handicaps, I'm looking forward to it.
random handicap suggestions off the top of my head:
- in Team Melee mode: "spies within" Incontrol gets a melee partner from staff who will divert one random unit from his current move or attack comand with a different, random move or attack command every 45 seconds or so. (no cancelling buildings or attacking own units please:-p) (change the timeframe as you feel it balance out, i didnt think too much of the possible implications of this handicap, but it would be sure fun to watch)
- "JuneZerg" no mutalisk stacking :-p
- "health care" no plague, no ensnare, no infesting command centers, no spawn broodling. (basically no spells that affect other units directly)

It's a great idea for iNcontroL to be the next foreigner to do this. He's an excellent player and a great guy, and I'm excited to hear how members do against him. I don't have any suggestions for handicaps, as I think some pretty good ones have been offered already. Good luck to everyone involved.

I suggest No Hive Tech, as Hive units and tech are extremely imba. I feel as if you can get by without it in all three matchups. Also suggest offracing. It'd be fun to see Inc offrace against someone of a C rank level.
Spawn more overlords: You can only construct an overlord (only one) when your food is maxed. If your maximum supply is less than your current supply, you can build enough so that you are no longer capped, but no more.
These might be a little mean. No more than 12 zerglings can be on the map at any given time. (12 is mainly for early defense) No hive tech First 3 hatches must be in main.
Slightly nicer handicaps Lair units can only be created from lairs. Hive units can only be created from hives. Only one upgrade per unit allowed. (no ovi speed and carrying etc.) Max 6 muta groups in TvZ
I might make a new map for the TL submission, or if you are looking for guest commentators I'd apply for that too . Been doing a lot of commentating on my stream recently.
Handicap suggestions: 1) Supply handicap either based on the opponents supply (own supply not to exceed that of the opponent or even always below that (-10/-20) sfter 10 minutes or so) or by universal standards, i.e. supply not above 150.
2) no upgrades (i.e. fighting upgrades, so 0-0)
3) not allowed to kill the opponents scout (includes static defenses build specifically to serve that purpose)
4) only use numbers 1 to 5 or 6 to 10 or something along those lines (no hotkeys for unit building could be a bit too harsh for zerg?)
5) when lair tech has finished only ensnared units may be attacked!
6) if it is zvt: hive tech may not be researched unless an infested command center is gained.
No hydra den. This will force him to play the 'kwanro build' in ZvT. As for ZvP, ling heavy with mass mutalisks teching to ultras, I remember a Jaedong rep where he did this. Lings, scourge, queens and mutas until ultras arrived. Really cool!
- No stacked mutas (i.e. can't stack them with a larvae/trapped unit/overlord) - Must pool before hatch - Must solely use scourge to kill enemy air units/floating buildings - Can only choose one hive tech building to build (defiler, ultra, greater spire, etc.) - Same but for lair. - Must choose just a single upgrade to research from any given building - i.e. if carapace is upgraded you can't get melee/ranged attack and if hydra speed is used you can't get lurkers or hydra range.
Overmind with alzheimers The overmind got old and unfortunately cannot remember which buildings has been spawned already. So it has to make new ones for each upgrade. Only one upgrade per building. I.e. If you want hydra speed, hydra range och lurker upgrade you have to build 3 hydra dens.
Lead zeppelins. All overlords have gotten overweight during the holidays. I.e. no overlord-speed. Should be fun vs dt/arbeiter/wraith. If the zerg manages to pull a slow drop, give him a medal.
Tree hugger. After seeing "Al Gores An Inconvenient Truth" the overmind has turned environmentally conscious and don't want the slimy creep to pollute the environment more than it has to. No creep colonies at all and hatcheries can only be placed when absoluteley necessary. I.e. On expansions to gather resources.
Scaredy units. All zerg (ground) units are nyctophobic, claustrofobic and acrophobic. I.e. Afraid of darkness, confined spaces and heights. The units don't want to be burrowed underground (it's dark and cramped down there) nor do they want to enter those scary overlord-thingies (It's high above the ground and dark and confined in there).
Other suggestions: Vs terran, It would be fun if zerg wasn't allowed to destroy command centers but had to infest them.
Two Is Enough - Our hero may not be in possession of mutalisks, hydralisks, and zerglings at the same time. Who Builds Those? - Our hero cannot construct a hatchery if he does not have as many creep colonies as hatcheries. Imported Gas - Our hero's first extractor cannot be in his main. For The Queen - Our hero must control a surviving queen in order to produce any hive tech units or structures.
A pretty good handicap that i thought of could be that the hero is limited to only using units that came from the original SC and not broodwar. Try using a zerg army with no defilers or lurkers :p

that could be fun PvZ, you could make the impenitrable reaver/sair/cannons/templar off 2 base and try to survive for 20 minutes while he just throws waves and waves of shit at you :D

Defilers were in the original SC. The only units that were introduced were Devourers and Lurkers, and it's quite easy to play without either (maybe not ZvT so much, but it wouldn't be so bad).

The beautiful banners attract them like moths to a bright light.
Problem with many of the handicaps suggested is they look fine alone, but stacking them may turn out to be extremely restrictive. Also as a viewer I would prefer handicaps that encourage creative play, but not to the extent that all they do is completely rule out a couple of strategies, funneling the poor guy into just a single subset of builds, like outlawing or heavily restricting muta/defiler would definitely push him towards an early/midgame allin ling or hydra break, resulting in an outmicroed opponent gg-ing
Do you really think a gamer of his caliber will have any problem beating a D-C gamer without mutas or defiler? The handicaps will only make the games slightly more exciting but it'll most likely end up in Geoff winning, regardless of handicap.

No lurkers, tho, will make it extremely hard for incontrol to beat anybody

Handicap: He MUST go 12 hatch. Should make it quite hard in ZvZ, make it more predictable for Terrans and Protosses (i.e. don't have to scout half the map before putting down the nexus and worst case, having made a forge first) as well as it'll be harder to defend against any cheese.
Of course it's a handicap but I'll agree that it's not a handicap bad enough to be of real entertainment or make it any easier to beat him except if people do some cheesy stuff.

Definitely a fan of no rally points. With hatcheries all over the place, it makes it harder. However, if a hatchery cap is in place, then it's not much use.

Keep in mind that not all handicaps will be picked and he won't even have half of them until the end.

Quite obviously it's going to be randomized and not all of them are going to be used. But if the combo ever arises, then there's not much difference with the handicap.

The handicaps stack so he might have no mutas, defilers, sunken colonies and then be capped with the number of hatcheries - that is going to pressure anyone.
1) Literal Torture. Muted game sounds, and being forced to listen to this the entire time. A vent stream could be set up with someone listening in to see if it's playing.
2) Ventrilo harassment, some douche gets on a vent stream with him and lets loose with Rick Rolls, Barrel Roll, Girugamesh, and every other fail meme they can think of.
3) Abortionist forced to cancel every third unit, don't really see how this is monitorable though
Diplomat: The hero's opponent may call upon a 1 minute(or whatever feels reasonable) truce at any point in the game at which all combat units must be withdrawn back to home base, or nearby in a reasonable fashion. No attacks may be carried out by either player, and no taking of new expansions or building defenses at unoccupied areas would be allowed. Serfs: No drone transfers, drones may only be sent out to make buildings or to the NEAREST mineral patches for mining. I think he should still be allowed to temporarily run the away from threat, or use them for fighting. Solidarity: Zerglings may not be used to attack enemy buildings.

no rights all larva must be hatched from the left side of a hatchery, lair, or hive. Any eggs on the left side must be aborted.
---
doesn't look that hard to do with the 'larva s' trick, but he has to wait for larva to wiggle over and might catch a few at a crucial moment on the wrong side. This might be a bit too intensive on the observers to keep watch of.
handicap: - You can't get any upgrade before you get a hive - All of your hatch have to be a lair ( but you can still use his larva but he have to be in evolution into a lair

Team melee with vision is definitely a good combo for a TvZ team melee. Me (D/D+ terran) + a friend (D terran) destroyed the hell out of a C level zerg 3-0, and he was just shocked by how hard everything fell on him, even compared to playing B-/B koreans. Imagine if we had some decent terrans, around C-/C playing that in team melee o_o!

ty i usually show up like half an hour late >.< so i wouldnt really know
Great to see a zerg player in TL arena. It feels like forever since the last one. One hatch lurkers ftw. I hope not all the players stay that long though.
