Kinda forgot about this, sorta didn't expect to start before halloween.

Wading in anyways.

First off, it is suprisingly amusing trying to piece together the setup from discussion alone. I also get a towny vibe from IAM being kinda a dissenting voice early on when Acro/Diz/Rayn were formulating setup strats.

Rayn also made a town-leaning post imo, #89 iirc. Also like where his mindset is in regards to the early setup plans.

From my experience in greymist games, game mechanics are pretty insane and can be misleading in a variety of ways so it's best not to get TOO focused and bogged down by then. However, the complexity of the mechanics can and should provide lots of discussion. I think I have seen coordination of actions and then verifying results be more successful than mass claims and would prefer to follow that style here. + Show Spoiler +
This is definitely not just because I do not understand my role or the setup right now

I did like his thoughts about the game mechanic. However, him thinking critically about the game mechanic can mean any number of things:
1) Pro-town contribution from a player who is thinking about how to get information for the town;
2) A third-party who's win-condition is somehow tied to usage of the TL Mafia Database;
3) A mafia member who has enough extra information about the Database to know that his idea is either pro-mafia or ultimately harmless to mafia's objectives.

I lean towards #1, because the information deficit of town is a disadvantage to town in the theme games I have played.

Do you always post this... constructed?

I try to present my reads in a very constructed format.

That all being said, I'm having a bit of a hard time thinking about how I want to approach this game, because my role has two win conditions. One is that I can win with town, and the other is... a bit strange, but potentially pro-town. I may choose to reveal more as I learn more about the setup.

I hate survivor claims. But yeah, feel free to afk all game. Zzzzz.

Pinging out this post.

Acro in general reads fairly scummy to me this far. He has this bouncy all over the place energy, feels like he is poking and prodding but though he claimed it was for info hasn't really talked much about reads.

I think the reason this post is sticking with me is the instant label and brush aside tone, which just feels scummy to me. Especially when Happa's post had an air of honesty imo.

Lol, I don't know what Sho is doing as either alignment.

Posts excuses, says he has no time, hangs around to fight the same fight he says he is tired of fighting...

Since I have only seen Grack volunteer so far I would also like to volunteer to do the database thing as I now understand and mildly dislike my role. Bonus WIFOM: I have basically had this role before.

Will finish reading (up to page 15 now) and double check the setup to make sure I know what's up later but I am done phone posting as I am getting some weird issue with my phone deciding I am done typing when I am not.

Ok, so looking over the setup I am thinking sending 2 people to the database is the move here. Sending 3 makes it easy for a 4th to sneak in and add corruption (assuming that's a thing anybody wants), and similarly with sending 1 and them not going (less likely, but still). I also think one of the people who access the database should check what the next level of corruption will do, not only does that seem like the most reliable bit of information that can be retrieved but it will remove ambiguity about the whole mechanic and possibly give us the option to use the database more freely the next night if it turns out the mechanic isn't too bad at the first stage.

I am a bit leery of Sho saying he might be the best person to check the database without trying to back it up with anything. The mechanic seems to imply Mafia do not get a benefit from checking, but I am assuming it relates to some role's win-cons or is a 3d party mechanic (it is bolded like a 3rd party in the OP).

I would like to find out what the next level of corruption would do, so that's my basis for volunteering and what action I would take. I'm also no longer so keen on the thought of sending scum reads to do the checks as I don't think it would really force anything (they could actually use the opportunity to carry KP, lie about the check and thus add double levels of misinformation to town).

The more I've thought about it, I think focusing on what checks we preform at the database over who gets sent is probably the way to go with that mechanic.

Each night, a player, instead of performing any action they may have, may visit the database and target another player. You will recieve a clue about that player's role or the setup at large. You can choose to learn whether your target has a role that has been in a previous aperture game before, If your target has activated some part of their role, what modifiers, if any, are currently affecting your target, or what effect the next stage of corruption level will cause.

Oh, ok I think I see what you mean. You target a player and then get options from there, but it seems like you would still get the option to check the next stage of corruption. It might just be too late and I'm still not processing this properly.

Ok, so I don't think I have the focus for this game right now. I couldn't sleep last night and tried finish catching up with the game and was freaking out for a bit because I was convinced that rayn had ended the phase 6 hours early. That said I did finish reading and here is where I am at.

It seems like the only really relevant thing right now is night actions and database stuff and the sense I get from the game is that everybody is just doing their own thing.

My understanding that the corruption counter can only go up by 1 per night so I don't really see much issue with many people using the option to check the database as we would go to 2, but 3 is the next threshold for whatever so maybe that's fine.

All I know is that corruption doesn't seem to be relevant to me (nothing seems to have changed with the counter going to 1) and I'm starting to worry about what it might mean for others to get the counter up. I think I still would like to check the corruption but am less sure that's the best thing, especially when rayn is now randomly gung-ho about doing this himself.+ Show Spoiler +
Which I find counter to what rayn was proposing earlier in the game but I will save this for a future post

This leads me to Dirk's role. I really dislike 2 things about his claim, first and formost for me is that his ability pushed us to the next corruption level and potentially changed things. Second is that he says he is a named town yet part of his ability makes him return as 3rd party now.

I was already thinking corruption is related to a 3rd party mechanic due to the way the rules talk about the database.

The TL Mafia Database

The TL Mafia Database is a wealth of information, and has assisted players with their quest for victory in many games. Sadly, it is in a sorry state of disrepair. Weakening security protocols and new technology has enabled greater access, but more serious danger of Aperture Science infiltration. Without proper care, the database will destabilize with disastrous results.

Because your connection to the database is unencrypted, Aperture Science will learn who you have targeted, but not the information you obtain. Other factions may be able to use the database in their own ways.

If no players visit the Database, it will continue to destabilize, causing the Corruption Counter to increase by 1. In addition, if too many people (half a majority of players alive - for example, 4 players with 12 players alive) visit the database, the corruption counter will increase by 1. At corruption levels of 1, 3, and 5, a special effect will occur that will modify the game in some way.

This just seems to back that up.

I also noted that Dirk's thinking about how many people to send and attitude about corruption increasing was pretty inconsistent, though I don't feel like filter diving to back that up atm. So I have this sense that he is either playing a bit dumb about the mechanic or is putting out seeds of chaos about it.
I can take that responsibility.

As for general reads;

Slam, Onegu, Sho, and Grack are all pretty unreadable to me right now.

Iam, Happa, and Yamato all feel pretty town to me. Mostly just tonal and they are consistently being constructive and bringing intresting stuff to the table.

Rayn is all over the place. I would need to do actual legwork but he started off the game wanting everybody to claim and seemed focused on a planning how to approach the database. He tore into Happa's claim, but unless I missed it didn't react to dirk's claim at all. Then he suddenly wants to go check the corruption when before he had stated he wanted to send scum reads, and I think he went back to that recently as well. Ever since I got confused, thinking he ended the phase early, I've been going back and forth about rayn in my head.

Acro is still probably scum. Nothing he has posted has stood out to me, can't think of anything he has stated or done while writing this and have no sense of where he is at with the game. Granted I could say the same for Grack and a few other people as well, but I think Acro has been posting much more consistently.

I feel like I'm missing something but this is more or less where I am at with the game right now.
I can take that responsibility.

So we're on the same page about dirk and his ask for "3" people to enter + protection?

I think so, but it is moreso that I'm having problems understanding his train of thinking regarding how many to send.

Like didn't he talk about sending everybody at one point? Which to me kinda makes sense, kus it would only add one corruption and possible give a bunch of info.

Then later say "only sending 1" is the best way to get info? Which just makes no sense to me, besides being able to confirm that yes they did go... but why wouldn't scum or whoever just go anyways to be like "see I did as told"

Honestly though, I just dont think I get the whole mechanic. Which is why I was wanting to avoid corruption and spend actions checking what it did for now. So my big issue is that we got pushed forward into further unknown territory by dirk's actions.

I'm probably going to be around through deadline, but like I said I'm struggling to stay focused on the game. I have things going on through Halloween so most of my time is going to real life anyways.

I am torn between doing nothing and checking the database in regards to Dirk. Slightly learning towards the latter since I suspect enough people are already going that we are getting more corruption regardless.

Bah, this is like politics... I know my choice has meaning but it feels like against the tidal wave of differing opinions my own voice means very little in the grand scheme.

Probably not, or at least nothing "good enough" but hey he prob has a short filter...
His First post is pretty constructive
Post 505 as well, I find his take on Happa interesting and it stands out from thread sentiment
626 is also a pretty solid post

I really like his approach to the game in general, probably mostly because I seem to be largely on the same page.

Can you explain to me your current thoughts about the database and what to do about it rayn?

The more I look at and read the rules I think checking "what effect the next stage of corruption level will cause" is specific to the person you are checking.

So I think if I check Dirk and what the corruption level does and I get nothing then that means his claim is pretty legit, otherwise my sus about him is totally valid.

This seems like a solid option for me then as I will either be able to clear Dirk or prove he lied about his claim.

I don't have an interest in trying to control what everybody does, but I do think it would be good to say who, what, and why you are going to the database so we can at least try to track what is going on in this game.

I have had a few questions about this, so here was my intent in the rules post.

You must always target a player when you visit the database because otherwise the database won’t let you connect. Once you are “in” you are able to determine what effect the next level of corruption will have on the game.

Again, my intent was to have that be clear from that post. Carry on.

Oh, "have on the game"

Guess it works closer to how I thought before then...

So I guess I wouldn't learn anything for sure but still get a bit of understanding what corruption will do. Humm...
