He is downplaying his skill. He wants to be the underdog story.

TLMCT Hearthstone League Update

Status:
We now have all the signups we need. Sandwhale will take over captaining team 2 from me, and I'm going to moderate the first round of the league since my rules are always poorly written and you guys will need clarification. Season 2 will probably feature 4 teams with me captaining one of them :O

Next Deadline:
Teams have until Monday, Mar 24 11:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00) to get me the following info:
  • Their decklists for their first-round matches. Each player will have 3 decklists. These can be in text or screenshot form, and the decklists should not be changed between submission and the matches. Since there are 3 teams in the first round, you will be playing 2 sets in round 1. You will probably want to submit 2 groups of 3 decklists, one for use against each of the two enemy teams, but if you want to use the same group of 3 decklists twice that's also fine.
  • Their play order. Each team's #1 plays against he other team's #1 and each team's #2 plays against the other team's #2 and so on. Your #1 should be your strongest player. Although I can't prevent you from reversing your order to guarantee at least a few wins, it's a friendly league guys so let's chillax
  • A team name!
  • A contact person I can talk to about scheduling issues. For now I'm going to use Sandwhale, GreyMist, and DarthPunk as they're the highest-ranked players in terms of skill, but if one of them wants to have someone else handle logistics and scheduling that's fine.

Once all this info is in, I'll email or PM all the contact persons you will have 1 week to play the match. You don't have to do it all at once, so if for example, the #1 slot game can only be played on thursday, play it then and have the #2 slot game play on tuesday or whatever works best.

Clarification, from match rules, bear in mind: "Each player must run 3 distinct classes." so you can't just run like 3 pally decks

Tournament Rules

Match Format:

+ Show Spoiler +
Each match contains 5 sets. Each set is played between 1 player on each team using 3 decks. A set is played pokemon style until someone is out of decks. Whichever team wins the most sets, wins the match. Record the score (4-1, 3-2, 5-0) for league scoring purposes. All sets should be played, even if the first 3 go to one team, since 5-0 is different from 3-2 in terms of league scoring purposes.

  • Before each match, each team sends me their decks and their play order (slot #). Each player must run 3 distinct classes. Beyond that, there are no restrictions on cards.
    • + Show Spoiler [Example] +
      Team of WoS, Hopeless1, Iamp.
WoS pms me a warrior deck, a mage deck, and a hunter deck. He tells me he'll be in slot 1.
Hopeless1 pms me a warrior deck, a druid deck, and a rogue deck. He tells me he'll be in slot 2.
Iamp pms me his mage deck, his hunter deck, and his paladin deck. He tells me he'll be in slot 3.
Alternatively, the captain can just send me one pm with all this info.
  • The match consists of 3 sets. Each player plays one set against a player on the other team.
  • The Match: At a time (or times) when the players can meet, the slot 1s play each other, the slot 2s play each other, and the slot 3s play each other. This is a match.
  • Each team tells the other team who is in what slot and what classes they are playing. You do not need to tell your opponent what is in your deck; you only need to tell him what the three classes you will play are. You can't make changes to your decklists after this point; the match has begun.
    • The Set: When 2 players play each other, this is called a set. After they tell each other their 3 classes, each player selects a deck for game 1. They play a game using their decks.
    • The set is resolved elimination-- when you lose with a deck, you can't use that deck any more during that set. When you win with a deck, you use it again in the next game of the set.
    • If you lose 3 times (that is, when all 3 of your decks are eliminated), you lose the set.
    • This means a set could be resolved in as few as 3 games (player 1 using deck 1A defeats all three of player 2's decks without dropping a game). Alternatively, it could take up to 5 games to resolve a set (each player gets 2 wins, so they're both on their last deck going into game 5).
  • After all 3 sets are finished, tally up the score (it will be 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, or 0-3). The team that won more sets will be the winner of the match.
  • If a team is up 2-0 after the first 2 sets, still finish out the last set, since a 3-0 will be different from a 2-1 for league scoring purposes for both teams.

These rules are actually pretty simple on the ground, even if they're complicated from the high level. Here's what, you, as a player, will do:

1) Before the match, submit your three decklists and slot # to blazinghand before the match. (or your captain does this!) At the start of the match, tell your three classes and slot # to the other team. (or your captain does this!)
2) The other team tells you who you are playing and what their classes are. Now your set against this player begins.
3) You select your first deck and begin playing against your opponent. When you win, you play again using the same deck. When you lose, you select a new deck. When either all three of your decks or all three of your opponent's decks are eliminated, the set is over.
4) Tell your captain who won the set.

League Format:

Round 1, each team will play each other. Whichever 2 teams have the highest overall set score will continue to the finals. The finals are a normal match played between the two teams, and whoever wins that match wins the tournament.

+ Show Spoiler [Example 1] +

Team A vs Team B : 5-0
Team A vs Team C : 5-0
Team B vs Team C : 3-2

League standings:
Team A: 10-0
Team B: 3-7
Team C: 2-8
Teams A and B advance to the finals

+ Show Spoiler [Example 2] +

Team A vs Team B : 5-0
Team A vs Team C : 3-2
Team B vs Team C : 3-2

League standings:
Team A: 8-2
Team B: 3-7
Team C: 4-6

Team A and Team C will advance to the finals, even though Team C didn't win any matches.

No-shows:
If someone doesn't show at their designated time, contact me to resolve the dispute. If you commit to showing up at a certain time to play the game, and you fail to show up, you will generally be considered to have forfeited that set unless there are extenuating circumstance.

I would probably put DP's team as an underdog just because of the three captains DP claims to be the least skilled. GreyMist and Sandwhale are both horrifically good hearthstone players. My money is on the Sandwhale team. DP is actually good and plays a lot though. It will also be a question of how well the non-lead players.

Since each Match isn't elimination style, but board-style, even if say GreyMist lost every Set he played, his team could still win if he coached them well.

In hearthstone there are certain rare and powerful cards of rareness type "Legendary". Most high-tier decks use them, and although you can make decks without them they almost always provide good options and usefulness when you use them. I had each player list which of the most powerful legendaries he had and assigned them point-values. The strongest legendaries like Ragnaros I gave a player 8 points each for having. The weaker ones like The Black Knight are worth fewer points, but still some.

The most points you could possibly get would be 55 points if you had every useful neutral legendary. The higher the score, the stronger your collection of cards is. I used this score to evaluate player strength and evenly split them between teams.

Sylvanas-------------8
Ragnaros-------------8
Ysera----------------7
Bloodmage Thalnos----7
Cairne---------------7
The Black Knight-----7
Leeroy---------------6
Nat Pagle------------5

Cairne, Ragnaros, Sylvanas, and Ysera all get high rankings for typically "2 for 1"ing.

Cairne has an extra life after he dies, so if you don't silence or poly him, he has to be killed twice, usually costing 2 cards.
Ragnaros nukes something for 8 before your opponent can react, so even if your opponent 1-for-1s with Rag, Rag still killed something or at least nuked him in the face.
Sylvanas seizes control of an enemy when she dies, so this usually forces the opponent into sub-optimal play or requires she be killed "twice".
Ysera makes a card the turn you play her, and the card is almost always good. Even if the enemy kills ysera easily you are up a card.
The Black Knight is similar in that he has a solid 4/5 frame and kills an enemy minion usually. More situational though.

Thalnos is useful in a number of decks, and is cheap and draws a card when he dies. Of the spellpower cards, he's one of the best. Leeroy is very very good in certain decks that otherwise don't use legendaries (rush and hunter decks) and Nat Pagle, despite the nerf, is a good card drawer in a control deck.

Ah nice. I never got into th card game craze although I used to read the MTG developer site ages ago. I also started playing a free one weeks ago on my Android phone called Evoker (fun, but shallow and a clearly broken card system aka bad game design kills it). Is there like an Arena type thing, video link where I can watch you guys play?

ETA: I forgot TL has a Hearthstone site now. Gonna look at it too ^_^

Unfortunately Blizzard in typical Blizzard fashion hasn't implemented an observer feature for Hearthstone, and there isn't in-app streaming either.
