Shady Sands make sure you're ready for actually hosting before jumping in. Not to say that co-hosting GSL III wasn't a very post and time-intensive process for you, but if you're feeling unready a second co-hosting stint would not be bad at all.
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

Would anyone like to cohost Cold War Mafia with me?

Where the sun shines so bright, it even turned the Cold War hot.

Flavor text: It's the year 1978. It's been 18 years since your country, Birindi, jumped out of the frying pan of colonialism and into the fire of the US-Soviet tug-of-war. The struggle shows no signs of abating. But recently, for the first time in ages, free elections have been held in your country. You, along with your twenty-three other comrades I mean, friends, are the new cream of the crop. Lawyers, doctors, the only college educated individuals in the country--you guys compose the Birindi High Council, and it is up to you, my friends, to fight to keep your country truly independent from the clutches of both the CIA and KGB.

Your weapon? Like any self-respecting third world government--purges, of course! Every day, you may select one of your fellow High Council members to be purged, in a democratic fashion. Upon death, their true identities will be revealed.

But be careful. Amongst your ranks, Quislings lurk, eager to sell out your beloved country to either the capitalist pigdogs or the proletarian vanguard. Once per night, each group of CIA or KGB traitors may shoot one of you. But fear not! For our beloved Birindi has truly capable men at the helm. The sun shines bright above our fair nation. Can we keep it that way?

Introduction:

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.

Rules:

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles.
5. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
6. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host.
7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits.
10. Sharing accounts with other players unless cleared by the host in advance. Otherwise, only you may post on your account.
11. Breadcrumbing the specific phrasing of your role PM. Do not compare the phrasing in your role PM to prove your alignment. You can claim the abilities you have, but you can't use the specific phrasing of your role PM.
12. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host.
Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.

Smurfs must PM the host because TL doesn't allow multiple accounts otherwise. If the host is unaware of smurfs, you (and/or your smurf) can be banned for having multiple accounts.

Spam:
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here. This also means you should condense your posts when possible. 15 one-liners in 30 minutes is unacceptable.

Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.

Inappropriate posts:
If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM a host, Flamewheel, or Mig before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally.

Reporting posts:
The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, Flamewheel, or Mig before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately.

Ban discussions:
Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.

Play to win.
This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.

This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.

You have been warned.

Out of thread communication:

It is common for mafia (and town circles if PMs are allowed) to use a medium outside of TL such as QuickTopics or IRC to communicate during the game. Please be mindful that other players may be more tech savvy than you and they may attempt impersonate members of your team or attempt to infiltrate your chat. You use these media at your own risk.

Voting rules:

1. Voting is done in this thread. Do not PM me your vote.
2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
3. No conditional voting.
4. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
5. In the event of a tie the person with the most votes first wins (or loses).
6. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain.

Signups:

This game is open to anyone (with preference for experienced players). Signups will remain open until all 24 spots have been filled.

Game-specific rules:

Modkills:
This game follows the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. If you want to use this game to sit out your ban, please PM Flamewheel or post in the Ban List.

Replacements
This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until time in the game. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.

Clues:
There will not be clues.

PMs
PMs are not allowed in this game.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow a 24 hour night/48 hour day cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the deadline is time, but that is subject to change. Actions/votes will be accepted up to and including the posted time, but not after.

The Setup

This is a semi-open setup. You will know which roles may appear in the game but not the number. Well, there is at least one vanilla townie. But that's all you know.

Role PMs:

Town Roles:

Patriot: You are a Patriot! The imperialists are trying to take over your beautiful country, and it's up to you to stop them. The only tools you have at your disposal is your wits and your votes. Use them well!

Secret Police: You are a Secret Policeman! Every night, you may investigate a single player to determine if they are Patriotic or A Traitor. You are guaranteed to be sane. However, each mafia faction may, once per game, bribe you, which means that all your checks that night will return innocent. Neither you, nor the other mafia faction, will be informed if you have been bribed.

Doctor: You are a Doctor! Every night, you may check in on a player, and administer medical aid if necessary. You block one KP. Neither you nor your target are notified of a successful save.

Voodoo Priest: You are a Voodoo Priest! When the sun goes down, you can exercise your special powers. Either once or twice per game, you may take justice into your own hands and curse another player in the game, condemning them to die the following night. If you are roleblocked, your voodoo doll is refunded. If the target is medic'd the night when your target is supposed to die, your voodoo doll is gone. Voodoo curses count as one KP each, and cannot be stacked from the same Priest onto the same target.

Special Forces Officer: You are a Special Forces Officer! You know martial arts, how to keep yourself from bleeding out, and how to cure yourself of common poisons. You may survive one KP. If you are hit, you will be notified.

Moscow State/Harvard Alumni: You are an Alumnus. You and your fellow alumni graduated from one of two universities--Harvard and Moscow State. You will share a QT with another two Alumni where you can communicate outside of the main thread. If your group is identified as Harvard Alumni, there will be a chance someone in the group is CIA, if your group is from Moscow State, there will be a chance someone in the group is KGB. If you are rolechecked, you will only show up as an alumnus, with no indication of which University you are from, unless you are scum, in which case you will show up as scum. Alumni are guaranteed not to be blue.

Mafia

There are two factions of scum in this game, the CIA and the KGB. Each faction will have two regular agents, as well as two unique power roles.

Agent: You are an Agent! You and your fellow operatives came to Birindi to stage a coup. You win when you outnumber the town AND the other intelligence network, or nothing can stop this from happening.

CIA Power Roles

Tactical Air Controller: You are a Tactical Air Controller! You've got the fingers of God. Or more specifically, a flight of F-111 Aardvarks on call. One night per game, you may plant a targeting beacon by someone's house, bringing down over 80,000 pounds of precision guided ordnance and guaranteeing an unblockable kill on him/her and whichever unfortunate soul(s) visiting that night. Your action will count as a night visit. If you are roleblocked, your targeting beacon will be refunded.

Station Chief/Eyes in the Sky: You are a Station Chief! You're a fine, upstanding citizen of Birindi who's been operating in deep cover for a while, and amassed quite an amount of respectability. As such, the CIA has given you the responsibility of leading their efforts in the region. In addition to showing up as town to any rolechecks, you also gain access to the Keyhole spy satellites, allowing you to function as Eyes in the Sky, which means that twice per game, you may find out the targets of every single night action that night, as well as the type of action performed (mafia hit, medic block, cop investigation, vigi hit.) May not discover who initiated which action. This action will not count as a night visit on any of the discovered targets.

KGB Power Roles

Bomb Artist: You are a Bomb Artist! You've got the touch of death. Or more specifically, fourteen hundred grams of Semtex and a pressure plate you can hide under someone's front porch. Once per night, you may "set us up the bomb". If anyone pays a night visit to that individual, the bomb will detonate--an unblockable kill on that individual as well as the night visitor, and anyone else who visited that night. In the morning, the bomb returns to hand and you may booby-trap someone else or that same individual again. If you are nightkilled or lynched, the bomb will remain in place for an additional Day/Night cycle before the fuse decays and the bomb becomes inert. You only get one bomb--once it goes off, you will become exactly like a regular Agent.

Resident Head/Honey Trap: You are a Resident Head! You're a fine, upstanding citizen of Birindi who's been operating in deep cover for a while, and amassed quite an amount of popularity. As such, the KGB has given you the responsibility of leading their efforts in the region. In addition to showing up as town to any rolechecks, you also run the local brothel, appropriately named the Honey Trap. Six times per game, you may roleblock an individual. Said individual will not be able to perform their night powers (this includes the Tactical Air Controller.) You may roleblock up to three individuals per night. Said roleblocks will not count as night visits.

3rd-Party Roles

The Mugabe: Screw those Russians and Americans... and screw this squabbling council too. What Birindi really needs is strong leadership... your leadership. You are The Mugabe. At the start of the game, you may choose to show up as either Patriot to all rolechecks, have immunity to one KP (like the SF Officer), or have one bullet to kill someone (like the Voodoo Priest). You win when you are the last man standing or nothing can prevent you from being that.

Q&A

  • Town wins when there are no more scum.
  • A scum team wins when they outnumber town + the other scum team or nothing can prevent this from happening.
  • Scum KP is fixed at 1.
  • It takes (players remaining)/2 rounded up votes to lynch somebody. ie, with 6 players in the game, it takes 4 to lynch.
  • The mason's ability cannot be roleblocked.
  • Doctor cannot target himself. Doctor cannot target the same player two nights in a row.
  • Role PMs may vary slightly from the ones shown here.
  • There are no 3rd Party Planer Dragons in this game. Probably.

Probably.

depends on when it starts, i'm hosting something right now but seems interesting

Probably.

You should get someone to look at that setup. Your third party looks to have almost no chance of winning...

Replacements
This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until time in the game. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.

Probably.

You should get someone to look at that setup. Your third party looks to have almost no chance of winning...

Hmmm, should I give him the ability to pick two out of the three powers then?

imo 3rd party needs serial killer (infinite vig) AND one of [1-shot BulletProof OR Patriot]
But also,

About balancing your game:
All games must be balanced to ensure that people have fun while playing. Nothing sucks worse to lose a game only to find out your chance of winning was next to nil from the start. Please note that TL Mafia may be different from other forum mafia sites, and some setups that work on other sites may not be appropriate here. If you are hosting a game you must get the setup approved by one of the following members before starting your game:

Incognito, Ver, Foolishness, flamewheel, GMarshal

so there's that...

Been PMing Foolishness this whole time; I think he's okay with the setup. As for giving SK some extra powers, I think your suggestions are great. I'll put them into the flavor text when we roll.

Okay, do I need another cohost?

Whenever you've got a sec Foolishness, please put [N][T] Cold War Africa Mafia placed into the queue. Thanks!

Make sure you've read the definition for normal games.

Because I assume what you wanted to do was a normal game in a themed flavor I just wanted to make sure you know you can still do this.
OP
*Note: If you take a normal setup and rename all the roles for flavor this is still a normal game.

Isn't a [N]ormal game restricted to 1 scum faction? Seems like the 2 factioned nature of the cold war makes it inherently non-normal.

I really like the Neighbor flavor for it (alumni, and there may be a scum in the "neighborhood" but only of a specific scum faction.)
