And if you're actually competitive level, you'd kick ass and get noticed anyway. Like WildTurtle from Toronto or Quas from Venezuela. In other words, if an extra tenth of a second of latency is really enough to keep you down from rising above the rabble, you were never truly elite in the first place. Blaming ping is just a sign of a defeatist attitude; that your mentality isn't cut out for professional competition. Here's a repost of an argument I had on reddit, its not all about ping. Also this *isn't* an excuse for me as a player, I'm from Vancouver, on the west coast, so my ping is decent and I'm still only low plat. I'd just like to see NA able to compete as a region internationally and I'm tired of EU+KR>EU jokes. "Of the 25 American born players 15 are from California. Essentially, its due to a combination of the servers being there, making it significantly easier for you to reach challenger and be noticed by a team, and the fact that the LCS is hosted in California, meaning that California born players barely have to move to join an LCS team. Pobelter and Daydreamin even attended highschool, without having to transfer schools, while in LCS. The people from California are so circumstantially advantaged that it actually limits NA's talent pool. It's like having a nationwide race and having 19/20 people run it while wearing 10 pound ankleweights, the people you get at the end aren't the fastest people, they just weren't wearing ankleweights." "Think of the major barriers to an aspiring e-sports pro. Acceptance/motivation is a major one, whether a parent or guardian will allow their kid to move out and put aside their education to go pro; and whether the kid is even sufficiently motivated to do so. Obviously players from California would have to deal with this issue, but it is much less of a concern than for a player from another state/country. After all, the idea of your kid moving across the country, with you only being able to see him in the off-season, and completely dropping his education to play video games for a living isn't something a parent will readily agree to. And its a major life choice for the kid as well, not everyone is just going to jump at the opportunity. Your kid is just moving a couple hours down the highway, still attending highschool (which, as stated above, some LCS players did) and making a significant secondary income obviously sounds like a way better deal." To follow up on Quas and WT, you have to be a pretty exceptional person to be committed enough to travel across the country/to a different country, putting your entire future at risk by taking a job with really low job security and putting you education at the wayside. Plus you have to be a pretty exceptional solo queue player. I mean look at WT. I'm pretty sure he didn't have 4 accounts in the top 10 when he was in Toronto, but put him on the west coast ping and give him the time needed and he's THE solo queue god. Honestly, its not much of a surprise that alot of the best players in NA, Meteos, Sneaky, Hai, Quas, Lemon and WT just to name a few are from the east coast (or Venezuela in Quas' case). The commitment needed is so much larger that you're bound to get more dedicated players, and often more talented players as well.

Which branches off to a separate question: What similar game offers a comparable career opportunity in NA? What's the competition for the efforts of a player potentially good enough to play this sort of thing for cash?

It seems a bit unfair to say that NA's problem is in location and ping.

Everyone shitting on EU and our SEA hipsters led me to believe that AHQ could get 4th or 5th. But at the same time I think EDG are favorites over SKT and TSM actually have a shot at winning so perhaps I just want upsets :p @ed: OK I forgot about Kevin's great carrier, oh what a great player why does noone but Thorin give him recognition.

So going a bit deeper than that; League, or e-sports in general, hasn't established itself sufficiently in society as a 'thing' or viable career yet. And there still needs more money involved in it. It's just a relatively young cultural phenomenon still. (from an NA resident perspective; I can't speak on EU)

EDG won't do better than SKT, TSM won't do better than SKT, neither TSM nor EDG will win MSI, Fnatic won't do better than SKT. If any of the above turns out to be false I'm willing to be permanently banned, if you accept the challenge. If not then I don't really know where your confidence is. Easiest bet of my life. I agree to this.

Plus physical distance (not latency, but the aspect of parents letting their kid live so far from home) should be far less of an issue.
