Now that China seems to have legitimately competitive teams in a game that I both care about and actively play (never got that into dota, don't know why), I find it that much more enjoyable and I find myself being more passionate about these tournaments.

(Was hoping that a loss would make the arrogance of TSM die down a LITTLE-but not too much as their arrogance actually makes them interesting and somewhat loveable-. And i really liked the style of TPA and Azubu Frost... the CLG EU games vs WE were miserable snoozefests... srsly any team thats plan is "play until they get bored and fall asleep" is so boring to watch.) Also Azubu Frost put on a SICK show in their games vs CLG Eu. They lost, and from an outside perspective it looked like they all came together and said "Ok now we play for reals, no more holding it back for finals" and they absolutely STOMPED on CLG EU in game 2. And then in Game 3 they just stuck with what was working and won out again. Really <3d the gamed and thought Riot did exceedingly well with the shitty situation they had to deal with. Also with Riot deciding to put in a Lan, shows even more how dedicated Riot is to making their game succeed as an esport.

Well, like I said in the other thread it probably was more or less a matter of pointing a client to a "local" server (probably just the side that hosts the game) that's hosting it, so it's not really LAN like you're used to, but effectively the same. They could still theoretically use the normal login and lobby server. There's also the possibilities they've worked on it a bit before or rushed it and we may end up with a whole new slew of bugs and interruptions due to the last minute attempt at doing this.

It's not really "Lan" per se, but more like a local tournament server. http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/11e1pt/lan_client_to_be_used_for_world_championship/c6lqr57 I am a software engineer at Riot, and while I am not directly involved in the setup at the tournament I am very familiar with setting up "local" servers. We use local servers at the office when we need to test the game or do end-to-end tests of our software. Some of you have speculated on how Riot is switching to "LAN" mode so quickly and I can give a little context that you may find interesting. As many of you have speculated, the Riot "game server" is actually made up of lots of different server applications, each specialized to handle a specific function (login and authentication, matchmaking, game allocation, chat and so on). In addition to those applications we have other pieces of infrastructure such as databases, message brokers and memory caches that run on these servers. Together, all these components make up the Riot "platform". The applications are designed to run in a distributed environment, across lots of servers, at high scale. However, they run just fine on limited hardware if you just need to host a few players. Most of the work involved in getting a local tournament setup to work reliably involves in getting the necessary hardware and network devices configured and tested to ensure everything works as expected. There isn't any code changes necessary as the server software has dozens and dozens of dials and knobs that can be tweaked to configure it to run on anything from a (beefy) laptop to dozens or hundreds of servers. What they have setup isn't really a LAN server in the sense that we could give it to an end user to set up a local LAN party or anything. It is pretty complicated to setup and get running (unless you know what you are doing of course Like I said, I am not really involved in any of the tournament activity, but I was enjoying reading the speculation on this thread so I thought I would unlurk and give some context.
