I can't imagine any AP DPS mage not going void as one of their six items, the DPS reduction in late game would be enormous. If you buy cap as your last offensive item it is probably a ~300AP item. Maybe you don't need the damage but it is so insanely efficient the trade off must be huge. Zhonyas is just one of those items that very well may be a flex pick I will grant you but if you are trading it for a damage item like echo I think it is a mistake.

Boots/cap/void are 100% mandatory and hourglass has way better utility for anivia late game. Seraph's RoA is no longer a very good option for her IMO now that blue buff is terrible. You have a big pool, but it drains, and basically never refills even with blue. I'd honestly just go dring(s)>tear+athenes because that allows you to just sit in lane until you run out of HP, rather than mana. Hourglass may have better utility, but the proc does do respectable damage midgame, and you can double tag somebody with the proc because you have 6 spellcasts in a full combo(including turning ult off, or moving 200 units). Anivia's problem was never lategame damage. It's the mobility of enemy team, and her early game, where she can get bullied by a lot of stuff to the point of uselessness. If you can ever save up for an NLR I'd strongly consider it. Also you move fast. Very fast for a bird. Void isn't really a flex item, but it's not as big a priority as many other items.

So there's only one item slot where Ludens Echo could possibly go, and you'd be building it at minimum as a 3rd item. For pure damage on Anivia, I'd imagine either Void or Hat would outdamage Ludens as a third item. If you're talking about later on, I'd imagine that almost all the time a tank item is better, because you're Anivia. Don't really think I'm sold on it for the bird, but I could be biased and wrong. You know where I do think it'd be good on a lot of APs is as a hyper late game boots replacement, similar to Zephyr for ADCs.

It felt underwhelming for 2 reasons: I didn't see the particle ever, despite getting hit several times and buying it myself, I don't even know if there's one. And when a Lichbane/Echo/deathcap (I think?) TF killed me, Lichbane did 160+ damage post-resists, while Echo did 139 pre-resists. So champion-depending, some items do more in terms of single-target burst. Deathcap isn't necessary on Anivia, that's like saying it's necessary on Cass. Sure it's cool and all, but she doesn't need it. Her base damage and ratios are absurd, to the point that even with just runes/masteries/RoA she bursts harder than a bunch of ult-less combos with ER (10s cd, 6s if you let R run). Didn't try maxing E on Nautilus. I guess I should. His base stats aren't actually great or anything at early levels, so I think W max is still better for dives, in case of counterganks, and if the enemy laner turns (really, just because you'll grow huge don't try to fight LB). Farming 1k for Bami's Cinder before 2nd back is pretty jarring too (not talking about Juggernaut because I didn't complete it until later). I managed to get Glory relatively easily but that's because we won a few fights and I manage to scrap by, giving me a bunch of assist gold and the ability to lane tax/walk back into the jungle, but it didn't feel fast apart from that. My concern with maxing E is that the ganks don't necessarily last enough to use it multiple times, and Naut's burst is still lower. On the other hand, they smashed W so hard damage-wise that... Remember in s2 when Nautilus' W dealt 130 damage at level 5 and Riot sliced it because they didn't like the idea of a tank wrecking a no-defensive items low-base stats squishies if he managed to catch them and stay on them at level 9, his peak damage-wise? Oh hai Sej. It's hard to tell about itemisation because he had golem in s4, but he had the total health thing in s5, basically. Usually past a point when you have enough CDR it's more about his mana and managing his damage (eg. timing W and the pros of tanking burst damage before activating it so you get more duration/damage, which doesn't count anymore) than his health anyway, because you get 600 HP shields every ~10 seconds on top of an already decent HP pool.

If you support against him pick leona for freelo He lacks damage in the lane but honesty his stun peels so well when ppl try to all in your ad and with his heal you can sustain so well in lane. He also has absurd dragon control and that ult late game is amazing.
