Getting to level 30 is a fucking pain. I think it took me 1 or 2 months to get to it? and that was during summer and playing a FUCK TON of games.

Should just get rid of the level 30 requirements imo, and increase the number of champions owned requirement in order to play ranked.

The first time I hit level 30, I think it took me like 2.5 months. I saw Saint do it in like 3 days, but he was using double XP boosts and played like 14 hours a day.

Getting to level 30 took me 8 months. I played like 3-4 games every weekend until ramping it up to 4-5 games a day for about a month and a half at the end.

This is fairly close to my experience, iirc. Took an insane amount of time.

Well generally its about 250+ games, so 8 months is about the rate you'd do it playing a game a day
When in doubt, just believe in yourself and press buttons

You have to remember that most people who first pick up the game are trying it out it for the first time, so they're always going to be pretty casual at first. So the volume they play will be pretty slow in the beginning. I'd say for most players who play on a regular but light basis will take around 4 to 6 months to get to 30. Which is a pretty insane time investment to just getting started at the real part of the game.

Yes, that's what I thought too. I thought that I could not honestly suggest to someone to spend 200 hours just to barely get a glance of my world - a world of ranked solo queue.

The reality is, pre level 30 can be fun too. I don't have any good data to back me here, but ARAMs constitutes a huge portion of low level games - these players play these games because they are fun in itself, without the need of runes, masteries, etc. If you play ranked solo queue 24/7 trying to hit Diamond, it's really hard to understand the perspective of people who are just playing for fun. What we think is important may not be what is important for everyone.

It's not just the leveling system. The fact that every champs is unlocked in Dota from the start just makes it way more appealing. See a champ and want to try him out? Go right ahead, he's unlocked. That single thing makes Dota more easily recommendable. And there's plenty of dumb random shit to have fun with in Dota too. I still like LoL a tremendous amount but I can't see how you defend these archaic systems that exist just to draw money out of the player base.

Edit: I even had a friend I tried to get into LoL but decline because his other friend was trying to get him into Dota and he liked the idea of all champs being free. Circumstantial obviously but this can't be an isolated incident.

It depends on the person though. Have you ever tried to explain some of DotA's systems to someone who wasn't familiar with RTS (let alone MOBAs)? Denying, different shops, the courier, jungle spawns, str/int/agi, selective magic immunity in addition to all the obscure shit in a MOBA. The grind is annoying, but for a casual play League as a game has a far smoother learning curve for a new player.

If the player was familiar with RTS (particularly WC3) I'd probably go with DotA, but if they were completely new I'd recommend LoL without question.

There are more systems but honestly the learning curve on MOBAs is so steep in general it's not that much extra stuff to explain compared to League. Like if it was the only MOBA they played it would be confusing as hell at first but they would pick up on it just like how most players do with League. With the changes to Baron, Dragon, and towers there's a lot of obtuse stuff to explain in League now too.

Edit: I guess if I'm gonna recommend it to a super casual player then sure, I'd go League, but i can't think of many times where that's actually gonna happen. The people I would recommend MOBAs to are already fairly hardcore gamers.

Can't remember how much did it take me to level up till 30 but I remember it was quite a bit of time to be honest. As someone mentioned, maybe not the problem is to grind up those games to finally start playing rankeds, but gathering IP for all of them champions + at least 3 whole pages of tier3 runes is ridiculous.

I would say it takes 200 hours without boosts. Someone can probably verify this sjnce EXP gain has a known formula.

Does anyone know if all of nightblu3's accounts are banned? That would be pretty funny

Slow stacking, MS boost stacking.

Seriously, the rules don't make any fucking sense and the exceptions are worse.

Ofc most of that doesn't matter to a new League player, but most of the crazy nonsensical stuff in DotA doesn't matter to a new player either.

While I'm sure Riot can make small tweaks to new account-leveling to accommodate the way the game's changed over the years, I feel like these complaints about leveling a new account really only apply to veterans that want to smurf.

New players need a LOT of games to really understand how LoL works, what a meta is, the positions of the lanes, etc. Unless a new player has a veteran friend to help them out, there's really no point for a new player to immediately get a lvl-30 account. They're not just gonna jump into ranked like that. When newbies start playing, their first concern isn't "omg no runes no extra pages no OP champions". They're gonna be more worried about losing to bots in coop AI. I highly doubt they want to jump into ranked so early on. And if they really like the game that much, I doubt they'd really notice the grind as a new player because they're too busy just having plain 'ol fun playing the game, unlike (maybe jaded) veterans who see normals as a waste of time and only care about the competitive aspect of ranked.

While I don't mind that there is some sort of progression to enter ranked, I think it's a bit much right now. Look at other online games, like MMO's or MOBA's, etc. How much progression is there to get into "end-game" stuff? Maybe a month of consistent play would be a pretty reasonable, maybe two months? But as it is now, it takes most players who first start a lot more than that to get to end game content.

I don't remember the experience of leveling an account very well. All I remember is a lot of smurfs. Tons and tons of smurfs carrying their friends and just trolling up games.

The end game in LoL isn't much different from the early game. People level 30 still play normals.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.
