I will respond in length to this in off-topic if you want, but I think your view of the patch is very off/misguided, especially with regards to the LoL comparison.

It's incredibly significant and I think it's a shame a lot of people won't recognise it. The only step up from this is probably Riot just becoming an ISP and providing free internet for everyone to play their game. No doubt it's been something they've decided they need to do because of all the issues that they've had with ISPs before like Virgin.

There really isn't all that much to manage before the players arrive at your server unless your maintaining the actual network Oo

Not even sure if that's possible.

Will this make them more or less able to deal with the load of the replay system, which has been stated as the reason it can't yet be deployed? I'm not versed enough about how network traffic is handled to know if something other than just the raw bandwidth numbers can help solve the issue.

Next news: Riot partners with all the internet providers to provide you an internet package dedicating for LoL only. With $5/month, you can have internet to play only LoL (no surfing web and stuffs) from a wide variety of networks, such as cable, dsl, adsl, satelite, 3G, 4G,....

Whether or not any given change is successful in that regard is obviously debatable.

League feels much more strategic than tactical (though take this judgement with a grain of salt because I've only watched TI3) compared to DotA which basically means it is much less action heavy. My old BW friend who moved to DotA complains that League is just really boring to watch since going for lots of skirmishes and kills is a high risk medium reward strategy whereas if you can pull off objective control to precision it becomes low risk high reward. The only exciting series at Worlds was Fnatic vs Royal because Fnatic plays for kills and at the same time Royal won games while behind in gold. Everything else was, from a casual perspective, incredibly boring.

if i'm forced to watch say the entire LCS season i'll probably come to a different conclusion, but so far teams like KTB and SKT tend to finish their games pretty fast and with plays all over the map. also about this On October 18 2013 07:23 Amarok wrote: What's silly is the idea that either game balances "to shake up the competitive hero pool". Whether or not any given change is successful in that regard is obviously debatable. they address both. for example, the trilane and jungling changes are largely competitive balance changes, while stuff like slark and bloodseeker changes are just there for pub experience. dota has always had these lol so random things for people to have fun with, but now they are purposefully breaking free of the wc3 engine limitation to implement some of these changes.

Everything else was, from a casual perspective, incredibly boring. Did you not watch Royal vs OMG? SKT/NJBS and C9/Fnatic (first two games) were pretty good as well. I think the worlds games would have been more interesting with a better format. Quarters were either stomps (GB/SKTT1) or matches with teams still not warmed up (NJBS/Gambit, C9/Fnatic). If quarters started with 8 teams who had all warmed up, and were as close as possible to the best 8 teams in the tournament you would have seen better quality matches. Both DotA and LoL have good and bad games/series. That DK v IG game that went nearly 100 minutes was an absolute nightmare to watch (even the casters couldn't sugar coat it). Most boring esports game I've ever seen. At the same time there are some incredibly epic DotA matches. LoL is no different. Royal v OMG g1 was fantastic as was Fnatic v Royal g3 (from memory).
