Hexdrinker -> Maw of Malmortius is a good example: You get hexdrinker early, you don't touch maw until you're at 4+ items and you still want it. I feel like Brutalizer->Cleaver and other items should fit this power curve, but it's extremely rare in League. (Haunting Guise/Liandry's Torment is the only other thing I can think of that is even close to a power curve like that.) Liandry's a super good buy on a lot of champs, you even see champs buy Guise mainly because they'll get Liandry's later. If anything it's an example of a good opportunity cost (get a Guise for stronger midgame) gone wrong (it's never a bad thing because you can upgrade it to Liandry's anytime).

On occasion I open Dblade on toplane Xin (only when laning against someone like yorick though), and All-in at level 2 with the jungler who just got blue.

it was pretty great, because only noobs would get confused by it and then we'd rag on them. if i saw an enemy with a dblade and i went like longsword or cloth, i'd just play passive as possible until i'd backed and bought real items. this is pretty lame, but from a lore perspective i'd like doran to get his memory back and make some OP Doran's items that build out of 2 or 3 of the basic ones huehuehue. or maybe something that build out of like dblade + bfsword, dring + nlr, or dshield + giant's belt

Wouldn't it benefit everyone to scale NMM down to 300 gold so its a viable start against APs just like Cloth is against ADs. And also scale Amp Tome down to 400 gold just the same as Long Sword. This way you could start with Defensive + 5 pots -OR- Offensive + 2 pots. You would still have the machete/flask/boots/charm/bead options.

Part of the problem in attempting to create starting item variability is that creating mixed strategies for particular structures can be very unstable. That is suppose we could create a system that had people picking random starts between dblades and pots. In this case it may only take a small meta shift or item strength shift to move us to a non random starting set. The reason for this is basically that the laning item start choice is roughly symmetric and zero sum. That is if we both chose the same options we will generally have the same outcome in the lane with regards to item effects. Even if an advantage in purchasing against the enemy lane by knowing what they bough could be attained the available options generally lie on a two dimensional spectrum if survivability and damage any threat of counter picking with item choices isn't credible. Counter plays and varying item starts in general cannot be achieved in a game like league because of the way the game is necessarily structured. What you find instead is that each matchup will have its optimal start and many times they will be the same if there isn't an inherent mismatch in the lane. This is not necessarily a bad thing and attempts to create situations in which the enemy or your own choice is not determinate can backfire and destroy the underlying competitive systems in a game. A good example of this can be seen in league with the penetration changes and the introduction if black cleaver. Black cleaver and the penetration changes were introduced in order to provide a counter play to stacking armor. But because stacking armor was a choice you made only if an enemy physical damage dealer was out of hand and the enemy magic damage dealer is not. That or if you needed to build against your lane in order to win lane. But because you only stacked armor int those situations the ability of physical damage dealers to counter your counter play meant that it never made sense to stack armor. Because of this much of the meta game involving team design was lost since you no longer needed to ensure your teams damage composition had the variety to protect against that. Thus non utility mages fell off since you could do just as we'll with the physical damage dealers and not suffer the disadvantages of ap champions. Please excuse spelling errors as this was posted with a phone.

Realistically, with what's possible with runes/masteries, the reason for homogeneous starting items is that you can simply just buy the most cost-efficient start possible, and do all your matchup-specific tweaking via runes/masteries (because you have far more specificity and optimization possible from that anyway). Which is precisely what people do.
